Hunter or Hunted

The sun shone down upon the land, lighting up the flowers of the balcony with all the colours of the rainbow. It had been made especially for such an effect, the light hitting the tilted metal riveted to the wall to direct it to the products of nature. A truly beautiful sight though he could not recall who had made it or why. He smiled as fingers brushed the petals, wondering whether such things needed a reason. Probably not.

"Beautiful, aren't they?" the voice came from behind him, a woman's voice and he turned quickly to see her, almost rippling into existence.

She had the most beautiful face he had seen but he could not recall having ever seen her. Something deep in his mind flailed but was silenced and instead he smiled and turned back to the view in question. It truly was worth watching for an age.

"I have never seen anything like it"

"Perhaps you will one day" he heard the footsteps approach behind him, "but for now..."

He felt the pressure, his balance vanished and she pushed him over the balcony. As the ground approached he opened his eyes...

******************* His eyes flew open and he blinked, world focusing and seeing the woman's face above him. Ah Laila, she had been such a pretty one. The voice of the Light itself and the mind of a raven for its cleverness. She had made the last few days a pleasure and they had spent much time together. He had not told her why he was there - in Caemlyn. No, too dangerous. However she had helped him get to know the place and its people. They had talked and laughed and...she had a dagger...why did she-

He rolled off of the bed and fell to the floor with a curse before pushing himself up just in time to duck under a slashing attack. He came up quickly with crack to her face that sent her sprawling to hit the floor on the other side of the bed. A dark smirk flitted across his lips in time to realise she was not alone. Another was entering the room, the lookout perhaps.. He grabbed his wrist just enough to smash an elbow into his jaw before shoving him away. He rolled across the bed, hearing the ripping of the sheets behind him. Coming to his feet he kicked his heel out at Leila's temple and rolled across the floor, blood no running down her face. A shame, she was so very pretty.

"The Great Lord will take you!" the man hissed at him.

"Hasn't done it yet," he set snarled and settled into a fighting stance and his fingers encouraged them to come to him. He was too busy to think about Darkfriends beyond killing them.

He stepped aside from the slash, hitting him in the eye before twisting away from his defensive cut. He turned just in time to lean out of the way of an attack from the now standing Leila. He was unarmed and so danced around the blade long enough to get a kick in before the man had recovered and jumped on his back. He staggered forwards, hitting out at Leila as he did so before slamming into the shutters, hearing them splinter as they gave way and the man lost his grip, tumbling out the window. Alrim wasn't sure if he was dead or hanging but he didn't care. He was alone, naked, hurting and very annoyed. Leila now jumped on him and forced him onto the bed. The dagger came down and his hand grabbed the wrist, stopping it from driving through his eye by a fraction of a finger.

That was when the door flew open, banging the wall, and he knew he was probably a dead man. There was a commotion somewhere, outside or downstairs he wasn't sure but he could quite clearly see the point that, through only the strength of his training, was wobbling just where his eyelashes were blinking.

Nathaniel "Brawn" "Big Blue" "That Bloody Mayener" Carridus "Burn me to bloody ashes," the Asha'man muttered to himself in a low voice, trudging through the streets of Andor. "Stupid flaming Gaidin thinking with the hair on their chest instead of their brains...." How was he supposed to remain irate with Bells when he brought him loads of cool stuff, cool and useful items or armour that actually fit? Right then Nate wore his metal studded, thick leather gauntlets, and his awesome boots that actually fit his ridiculously large feet quite nicely and gave him unnecessary additional height. The dark blue trousers and coat suggested he was a man of reasonable income and standing, though his hair was long, his walk was a stomp and he wore a great big bloody hammer on his immense back, all a testament to his baser roots.

There hadn't been much time to actually talk to the bloody Arafellin. With the new Gaidin's trip home, and Nate's own work on the Blightborder, it had been probably the longest they had ever gone without seeing one another. Even their Andor trip was something that sort of just happened, and since their arrival they had done much different things. Nate had some leads on the people responsible for what transpired in Viadulo, and a personal interest in smashing their teeth in. Alrim was apparently more interested in surveying the landscape of the place and it's people, one woman in particular. Nate didn't think all that much to her but then, since being Raised he'd been far too busy to indulge. Sure there were some who might think him handsome enough, or tall enough to be a challenge or something, but Nate had too much to learn about being an Asha'man to spare the ladies much thought.

That morning he'd set out early, but it was just another false lead. It was most frustrating, and Nate was considering leaving things as they were. Nothing would change if he did catch them, apart from he would be ever so satisfied when he kicked their asses. I should get Bells out of bed, see what he wants to get up to, the man thought as he returned to the Inn they were staying at, a modest place where the coin for a room was enough that they got separate rooms. Thank the Light, Nate appreciated in hindsight.

He went to open the door to the Inn, a little surprised that it was closed even at this time, and grunted when it wouldn't budge. Weird. Locked doors, not so good for business. Nate pressed an ear to the door and listened inside, not hearing anything- wait. Was that a thud? A knock?

"Bells!" Nate thought nothing more of the consequences as he lifted a boot and slammed the door open, barging on through and nearly bowling over a perplexed man who was holding one of the serving girls in a very unfortunate position. Nate didn't give them a second glance, but he did nab the man by the scruff of his neck and slam him down into the floor on the way past. The serving girl screamed and ran for the door, then a couple of men appeared at the bottom of the stairs looking puzzled about said open door. They were even more surprised when Nate ran into them and body slammed them into the wall, barging on up the stairs and not thinking about the fact that there were some shady dealings going on in their humble inn.

The door to Bell's room was slammed open so hard it hit the wall with force, and Nate stomped on in to see he was on the bed having some rough and tumble with that woman of his, only it wasn't the sort one enjoyed. The Mayener's face went from determined to downright angry as he took two steps into the room and picked her up beneath her arms like one might pick up a small child to stop it falling over. "Now now, I don't think that's such a good idea, hurting my best buddy." He scowled, and without further ado he tossed the woman out of the open window. She fell screeching, and the crunch at the bottom of the fall would have made Nate wince if he was a squeamish man.

Maybe I should've questioned her first, Nate thought to himself as he looked at his friend, who had certainly seen better days. "Hey! We've got company Bells, and they ain't happy to see you. Who did you piss off this time?" He looked around for some clothes and threw them at the man, "get dressed, we're outta here." He moved to the door and stood in the doorway, filling it as he guarded Bells from any harm. Nobody was going to make it past him! Maybe they weren't here just for Bells, the Blue thought as he stood there, thick arms folded. I don't normally get out of bed so early... I'd be asleep right now too if I didn't have stuff to do. The Mayener made a face, though that face turned to a grin a he saw a darkfriend peek his head around the corner. "Hey kid, you can come try stab me. I promise I don't bite." Nate bared his teeth, "not unless you use some stupid experimental drug to turn me crazy! Let's relive that moment now shall we, me and you? See if that makes you think of anything I oughta know about your little experiment circuit?"

The man retreated and Nate would have followed, but it was more important that they covered Bell's shiny ass first.

Alric "Sarge" "Creases" "Another Bloody Mayener" Aurella
Even during the mid morning, Caemlyn’s streets were packed. It was a business trip mostly, but Alric hoped to squeeze some pleasure in on the side. Nate and Alrim were supposed to be in town and it had been ages since he’d really taken time for himself. Bloody musclebound Greens all wanted to be the best at blowing things up, but nobody actually knew how to fight a war. Nothing, no long term strategy, plans for troop deployments, or even an idea of how many troops they would have at their disposal. Alric could honestly say that he was disappointed. It gave him a clear goal however. Over the last half decade, he’d given serious thought to fighting wars with the Power. Frustratingly, it seemed like he’d given the question five years more than anybody else. Most channelers could tell you their favorite weaves to use on enemies but nobody talked about logistics and communications. Those were the things that won battles before the actual fighting started. He barely even heard people talk about field hospitals, even though a well run field hospital meant men being able to fight another day. A clever mind could even find ways to use the Power to improve camp sanitation. Eventually, he thought he might talk to Fiona about field hospitals and pick her mind on the subject. Maybe the two of them could come up with something. Even if he didn’t, hopefully he could at least get people to start thinking as a team. That might have been a pipe dream, as easy as herding cats.

For now, Alric was too junior to really start delegating or shaping the Ajah’s goals to any real degree. For now he’d just go about quantifying what resources they did have at their disposal in case trollocs came from the north or Seanchan from the south. He was hear in Andor, doing the same thing he had done from Shienar to Saldaea, interviewing military officers and nobles and pouring through records to get an accurate troop count. Now he was in Andor to do more of the same. These dusty ledgers were making him want to pull his eyes out though. He thought he’d put work off for a day or so and catch up with his old friends.

The smells wafting from inside the inn reminded him that he had skipped breakfast. Stomach grumbling at the smells of beef and freshly baked bread, Alric approached the door. Hopefully this was the right—

The body plummeted to the ground striking the cobbles at Alric’s feet with a sickening thud.

“Blood and bloody ashes,” Alric said hand going to his sword. He looked up to see an open but vacant window and glanced up and down the street. No immediate danger. He knelt next to the body seizing saidin though he already knew it was futile. A pretty woman in her small clothes twitching slightly with a rapidly expanding halo of blood. Then the twitching stopped and she was still, eyes unfocused. An onlooker screamed. It took Alric a moment to tear his eyes away from the corps at his feet. Shock somewhat numbed by the Void, Alric pushed through. “You!” he shouted to one of the onlookers, “Go get the guards.”

Then he was stepping over the body and entering the inn. He ran a practiced gaze across the common room. People had just begun to notice the commotion outside. The culprit wasn’t down here. Probably. He rushed towards the stairs in the back and took them three at a time. He wished he had a plan, some forewarning, but a dead woman outside screamed trouble. After the first landing, Alric forced himself to slow down. He could be running into an ambush. He tried to keep an ear out, but the noise from downstairs would have drowned out all but the loudest noises.

Noises like running feet. Somebody was headed towards these stairs in a hurry. A terrified looking figure appeared silhouetted at the top of the stairs. He glanced over his shoulder and missed a step tumbling down towards Alric. A cushion of Air stopped him from plowing into Alric or breaking his neck.

“Woah, you ok?” Alric asked turing the man over. Seemed like mistress gravity was out for blood today.

The man, no the boy, sat up rubbing his head. His eyes widened and he looked back up the stairs, “No, let me go! They killed Leila and they’ll kill me.” He tried to push passed Alric, but the older man grabbed his sleeve.

“Two men, both big one has bells in his hair, did you see them? Are they ok?”

The boy’s face paled. “No, don’t hurt me!” he began to plead.

“I’m not going to… Wait, why’re you afraid of them?” It was beginning to dawn on him. He just didn’t quite know what “it” was. Hoping he wasn’t making a mistake, Alric grabbed the boy, spinning him and pinning his arm behind his back. “Until I figure out what’s going on, you’re coming with me,” Alric growled before frog marching the kid up the stairs.

It was mere moments before the weight was taken off of him and the had enough time to register Brawn's arrival before he threw Leila through the window. For a few moments Alrim's mouth hung open in shock - Darkfriend or not it was a harsh way to go and he hadn't expected such coldness from such a usually warm person. He was broken out of his reverie by his clothes hitting him in the face. He grabbed them and pulled on his shirt first, falling onto the floor as he tried to drag on his trousers. His boots followed and within moments he was dressed, if not perfectly. He grabbed his sword and pack and pushed past Brawn into the corridor.

"You're already crazy enough Brawn, don't ask for more. Need to get them. Question them. Don't kill this one," he stated, turning slightly to pat him on the shoulder, "thanks for playing the hero" he grinned and turned back to clatter down the stairs.

He was brought up short by the scuffling on the stairs and his eyes scanned the room below. Too many faces, too many ears and definitely too much trouble if they tried to do anything but run. The body outside would simply mark them out as killers even if they had been justified. No doubt the guards were on their way by now and he didn't mean to be around to get snatched by them. Thankfully Alric had already done their job for them by catching the survivor. The lad was trying to break free from the grip by pushing away from the wall. A sharp jab to the temple stopped the struggling.

"Thanks Creases, saved us some work. Tried to kill me too, the other two anyway. Let's get out of here, I have questions for him and I don't think the guards will let me ask until they're finished with him" he squeezed Alric's shoulder as he passed him on the stairs and stepped into the room, tugging at his shirt.

He strode to the door and didn't see any armour approaching yet which was damned good luck so far. He knew a place they could go, a new friend who hated Darkfriends far more than he ever could. She had good reason too but more importantly her shop was tucked away in a shady part of the city. He looked the other way and saw that the guards were now coming. And there were a lot for them too. Too late now.

"And they're here. Hope they know how to listen or we're getting put in cells" he told the other two as he stepped back into the room with a sigh and kicked at a chair

He had a feeling this was going to be a long day. No doubt, he also reasoned, there were more of these would-be assassins too. He didn't know why they targeted him specifically but he did know he meant to find out.

Nate just stood there like the Asha'man he was, though he did feel somewhat Warderly as he guarded the door and let Alrim dress. It didn't take him all that long to return to his regular clothed self, and the Blue looked down at the Arafellin with a grunt as he implored him to not kill any more Darkfriends. "Questioning?" he repeated, though he knew that he really ought to be a little more discerning with his treatment of these people. "I guess I can... as long as they ain't trying to bloody stab your eyes out again." He let out a small huff as Alrim made as if to leave, but he was all set to follow his friend. He moved behind him with a stomp, and was at the top of the stairs when Alric made his appearance. Well! Was this planned or not? Nate and Matty didn't remember but the Blue was always happy to see his friend. And he had one of their little Darkfriends too, even better!

"Sarge, welcome!" He shouted down the stairs, making his way down and punching the man on the arm. He then looked down at the brat, who turned his eyes up to the Asha'man with wide eyes, innocent apart from the face that Nate knew bloody well better than that. The Blue took him by the scruff of his neck and hauled him to a chair, pushing him into a seated position as Bells went to look outside. Guards. Well, this was going to be fun to discuss. Tact was not necessarily something Nate was known for, and as much as Bells had a smooth tongue, the man wasn't planning to take this lying down.

"It'll be fine," he said with his more typical cheerful nature back, as if he hadn't offed a Darkfriend outside and was considering another kill. "We'll explain the situation and they will be sure to let us go."

There was a commotion outside, and Nate figured they had come across the body. He moved to stand in front of the lad and clasped a hand on his shoulder, leaning down so they were looking into one another's eyes. "I'm gonna strike a deal with you," he said. "You tell these guards that you're a Darkfriend and I won't break every bone in your body." He gave a bright smile, "How does that sound? I don't need a window to do that when I have the Power, so..." he straightened up again with his hands behind his back as the door to the Inn opened, "your call."

The men came in with force, occupying the walls either side of the door. One, two, three, ten men, and more outside. Nate had no quarrel with these folk doing their jobs, and had no intention of hurting them either. They were good people and they were dealing with the facts. The man with the fanciest armour stepped in last and he walked like someone who knew what he was about, so it was him that Nate addressed in his usual loud manner. "Light shine on you, Guardsman!" He declared. "I am Asha'man Brawn of the Grey Tower, and we have a bit of a Darkfriend issue here." He made a gesture in the general direction of dear Sheila or Rita or Leila or whatever her name was, "they attempted to take the life of our Gaidin friend here, who can introduce himself. And we have a prime witness here in the form of one of their Darkfriends who would have evaded capture if not for the brave efforts of my fellow Asha'man here. Sarge you can introduce yourself as well." Nate folded his arms and was confident in his approach, though the guards had their weapons drawn still and were still not so impressed. Ah well, there was no pleasing everyone.

"Dire circumstances indeed Asha'man," said the Guardsman, "Murder on the fair streets of Andor. The Black Tower should know better than to cause such a disturbance."

"Oh, we're from the Grey Tower," Nate assured them.

"Got a brother who goes there," one of the men muttered. The Guardsman looked his way and he shrugged, "seem nice enough to me."

"We're happy to provide whatever statements you require," Nate said, "But this man here is a Darkfriend and we are looking into some troubling Darkfriend activity that will harm more than just Andor if we don't put a stop to it." The Asha'man pointed to the still seated man, "you! Tell them what a terrible Darkfriend you are."
