The Wheel Turns; Nothing is Ever New [Attn: Novice Velvaen Tamaril]

When the teacher said they could have a short break, Andraste let out a long sigh and sunk back into her chair slightly. She'd had excellent tutors back home in Kandor when she was a younger woman and she'd been a decent student. Schooling had never been her passion, like it had for her second oldest brother, but it wasn't terrible.

However now, she found herself a little more resistant. She felt...too old for it. Even though she was not actually that old, she had already been through all this. Well, not all these topics specifically since Grey Tower history and channeling weren't big with her tutors back then, but the general practice of it.

She wasn't sleeping well either, although sneaking out to the gardens at times had been helping...somewhat. As long as she didn't dream of her beloveds.

With her dark hair braided back from her face, only a few errant tendrils remained free but she had to continually brush them out of her face and as she did so, she noticed the girl beside her. Andra wasn't good at reading ages, but she thought the other woman was younger than her--like most of the Novices seemed to be.

The Kandori woman felt somewhat moved by her own isolation to speak. It was a strange inward battle between loneliness and wanting to protect herself, cling to her bitterness, but in that moment, the former.

"My name is Andraste," she introduced herself, politely if somewhat randomly from the outside perspective.

Velvaen
When her head slid off of her cupped hand, Velvaen jerked upright, her sleepy haze vanishing like snow in midsummer. She shot a hesitant glance at the Sister who lectured in front the assorted Novices, Soldiers, and Drin, letting out a small sigh of relief when the Brown remained oblivious to her blunder. Reaching up to dash away an embarrassing dribble of drool, Velvaen began scrambling to make up for her nap—hunching over her parchment and frantically scribbling down Oletta Sedai’s every word. Her enthusiasm began to dim, however, and Velvaen let out a tiny groan when she realized that she’d missed about three-hundred years of Shienaran history. The class dragged on, with the Brown sister’s droning monotone proving more harmful than helpful as Velvaen’s quill slowed.

Lost in thoughts of pottery and various glazes, being addressed by someone nearly gave her a start. “My name is Andraste,” the Novice said, and Velvaen turned quickly to take in the other woman. She was of a height with herself, with tan skin and dark hair. She was pretty, but nothing in particular caught Velvaen’s attention, aside from her age. She was unusually old for a Novice—Velvaen placed her as perhaps five years her senior, maybe more.

This introduction seemed a bit abrupt, but Velvaen did not fault her for it. In truth, she was rather glad the other woman had spoken up first—she herself rarely had the courage to do so. “Hello, Andraste.” She gave her a shy smile and made an effort to cut down her accent. “I’m Velvaen.”

"Velvaen," Andra repeated politely, inclining her head slightly in the greeting. She tried to place the girl's accent, which was still audible despite attempts to dampen it. She had been to many places to ply her trade, so she could recognize a fair few accents and nationalities, but she found herself having trouble to place this one. The girl's features did not aid the question.

The girl had a bit of a sleepy look about her, and Andraste wondered how much of the lecture she'd actually caught. Not that Andra herself had been paying that much attention...

She managed a small smile. "It's nice to meet you," she continued, still wondering why she decided she needed to be social. Not that she was especially keen to be not social, but being so wasn't generally a goal either. Yet, here she was. "Not the most thrilling class ever seen, I suppose one might say?" she said idly.

Velvaen
“I’m glad to meet you, too. And yes,” Velvaen agreed in a low tone as she shot another watchful glance towards the Brown Sister. “I certainly wouldn’t call it thrilling. Especially with Oletta Sedai’s… erm…particular lecture style.” Dropping her voice to a whisper, Velvaen added “I think she’d keep on like that even if somebody dropped her into a fist of Trollocs—she never gets angry, or excited, or anything!” When Velvaen shot another look at their instructor, it was more one of fascinated apprehension than anything else.

“Not that I don’t like history,” she put in as she turned back to Andraste. “I do, but I see it as a story, and good stories need good delivery.” Picking through her stack of notes, Velvaen found the point when she began to nod off—her small scrawl lengthening her letters until one slid off the parchment altogether—and slipped it onto the top. “Did you catch the full line of Shienaran Kings?” she asked as she inked the tip of her pen. “I’m missing the ones between Nerasad IV in 322 a.b. and Togarin Doltar in 586 a.b.”

Ah, so. The girl had fallen asleep. Andra tilted her head just enough to glance at the notes in the other Novice's hands and she could see how the writing had changed as she had drifted off. It was amusing to the Kandori, but she kept her face impassive but for that small, polite smile as she turned back to her own notes.

She slid them closer. "Yes, I've taken then down here," she said, pointing with a slender finger to her notes. Her handwriting was small and clear, used to writing in ledgers and making contracts.

"I agree that a better delivery would make all the difference," she said to continue the conversation as the girl copied the relevant information. "I think you're right about how she might react, but a Fist of Trollocs certainly would liven things up." She laughed softly, a sound that was little more than a shifting of breath. "Though there may be...less dramatic ways to achieve that effect."

Velvaen
“Thank you,” she said as she looked the other woman’s notes. As Velvaen began transferring the relevant names to her own papers, she couldn’t help but feel a little jealous of Andraste’s perfect hand. She herself had only learned her letters after coming to the Grey Tower. Her people lived simple lives, and coupling that with their practice of teaching the Way almost exclusively by word of mouth—well, they never were much for writing. Velvaen thought she had done alright so far—penning ink wasn’t so different from painting glaze on porcelain—but it still irked her that she couldn’t make it down a page without a score of blots.

As she scribed, she listened to the other woman talk and murmured her agreement. Aes Sedai were supposed to be effective against Trollocs and the like, but there would be danger regardless. Certainly not worth a twitch or two on the Sister’s part.

After taking down the last name, she swirled her pen nib clean and held the other Novice’s notes out to her. Though not particularly wanting to call attention to her own sloppy hand, Velvaen did want to keep connecting with Andraste, so she added—perhaps a tiny bit begrudgingly—“You write well..”

Waiting patiently while Valvaen copied the notes, Andra heard the murmur of agreement and debated whether it was distraction or some level of disinterest. It had been a while since the Kandori had needed to work at making any sort of friend--although was that what she was doing here?--so she wasn't quite sure of herself.

When the girl passed the notes back and commented on her writing, it surprised Andra a little and she blinked before laughing softly at herself.

"Thank you," she said, looking at her paper with a critical eye for her handwriting. "I used to be a merchant, and I was the one in charge of maintaining our records. My husband had--" She caught herself and paused, swallowing hard. It was the past tense to her words that caught her as much as the reference. Not wanting to let on, she cleared her throat. "Well, his handwriting was terrible and we agreed I would do that task."

Velvaen
Velvaen’s expression became one of concern. She wasn’t sure, but she thought she’d seen pain cross the dark-haired woman’s face, if just for a second. Did she say something wrong? Wait, Velvaen thought as she went back over Andraste’s words.
Her husband had terrible handwriting? Maybe his hand had spontaneously improved, but unless she’d completely misjudged the other woman’s expression, the more likely explanation was that Andraste's husband wouldn’t be writing again.

Concern became pity, and she opened her mouth to give condolences, or to say something that would make her feel better. But Velvaen quickly closed it and forced her face into a small smile. If her guess had been right, then she doubted the other Novice would wish to speak of her dead husband, so she latched onto the other bit of information like a barnacle onto the hull of an Atha’an Miere Raker. “So, uh, a merchant? That must’ve been exciting. What sort of things did you sell?”

Andraste was looking at the papers in the immediate aftermath of her statement, so she wasn't witness to any of the emotions that might have been visible on the other Novice's face. When she did look up, it was in response to the question and she saw the small smile. She felt relief, since that must have meant her slip was not noticed.

"Oh, all sorts of things, really," she said, glad to move on...although it wasn't really moving on either. It was that strange middle place.

She thought back, working very hard to not think about the last item she had ever negotiated... "I guess you could say it was curiosities and curios, as well as basics. We pretty much just found the things we found, or bartered or bought them, and then sold them again or traded them back out. It was enough mix that there was always someone for an item we had."

Pausing, she had to push a few more thoughts away. No, this was too much about her. "How about yourself?" she went on. "What of your life before coming here?" She hoped it would not touch on as many painful topics as Andra's could.
