Can i ward something?

He really did not like coming to the channelling yards, not one bloody bit! Goat kissing fools tumbling around, causing accidents as nearly often as achieving success. It frankly gave him headaches, and was while things were already difficult, concentrating on the weaves of others while trying to improve himself was just far to distracting to get any real work done.
But knowing his issues, Landrin, that bloody Master of Soldiers, had made arrangements for Calder to study a subject he had often asked about. Trial by fire, something he could respect, it was still a bloody pain!
He would bloody learn how to stop arrows in their tracks, like that Asha'man had done!
He began pacing back and forth, keeping his eyes closed, rubbing his temples with his thumbs. He definitely was not in the mood to look up, the sun was far too bloody bright this morning. His head felt like it had, that one time drinking that Aiel garbage. "Bloody Gooskai…" He said, followed by a long string of swearing. He cringed, remembering that morning far too painfully clear.
One positive did come to mind, though. No more bloody One Power Basics. "If i have to deal with one more goat kissing former noble…" Landrin would have never agreed to have him learn something actually useful, if he had not grasped the basics. Then again, he had bluffed his way out of that class...

Jaryd lifted his eyebrows as he read the note that he has found under his door that morning. He was to report to the channeling yard to teach Calder how to Ward. Doesn't every soldier learn that right off the bat? He had thought the man more advanced than that. Or.... Perhaps he, too, had a Talent, and Landrin wanted Jaryd to pass on his knowledge. That was a comforting thought.
He whistled cheerfully as he dressed, still feeling a glow of pride as he positioned the sword pin in his collar. He had faced his fears and walked away alive- how many of the brutes in Ebou Dar could claim that? He went about his morning duties with a spring in his step. Chores -not so onerous now he wore the pin- and classes, morning meal, study time. Then finally it was time to meet Calder.
As he approached the channeling yard, he realized he had not seen his friend since his raising; did Calder even know it had happened? Did he know who his instructor was? Probably not- the Tower was not big on over-informing its students. This would be....amusing.
He strolled into the grounds and approached Calder; the man seemed disgruntled, but otherwise stood still. "Are you waiting for a friend or a tutor?" He asked casually.
"Teacher. Flaming goat herder is late."
Jaryd supposed it was inappropriate for a Dedicated to giggle like a little girl at a ribbon market. Instead he stuck his hands in his pockets and lounged against the fence. "Are you sure?" He asked with a wicked grin. "Soldier Calder, what do you know about Wards?"
The withering look Calder gave him was priceless.

"What are you bloody wearing?" Calder said with disdain looking at his friend top to bottom. "Started to shop at the same shop as Seth, have you?" He said mockingly. He felt a sort of twisted pride for his friend. While Jaryd looked rediculous in his new outfit, the man deserved his new rank. Leaning forward, he said in a low tone "Because there is no way anyone would make you a Dedicated." Leaning back, he smiled warmly. "I mean, come on, you?" He adjusted his shirt, which was blatantly plain in comparison.
"Well, since i do not see any other goat kissing lecturers around, i guess you'll have to do this time." He offered, giving his friend a smirk. "Since you want to know about wards, let me teach you what they can do." He exclaimed! Facing the sun, he grandly announced "There were hundreds of black tip arrows, whistling through the bloody air! It sounded like a hundred angry weches hissing in hatred. No bloody way to flick them all with a gust of air, better luck running from the wenches! But this man, he faced the danger, he faced it…"
His voice grew soft, as his eyes grew dull. He remembered that day far to clearly. Perhaps he'll tell Jaryd about it, someday. "The weave was quickly spun, but i got the impression it was created like a dome. The arrows hit, every single one. We should have died, but clearly, I did not." He had made it out alive, with bitter memories he could not shake.
Striking a pose, the Tearian shook off the misery and exclaimed, "Your hero survived! All to bloody teach you about such a weave!" But his pose deflated, and he confessed ""But i have no bloody idea how he did it, or how it even worked. I just want… Need, to understand."

Jaryd's eyebrows went up further and further as Calder spoke. He had expected the lack of respect, but the blatant exaggeration seemed a bit much. He let the other man continue, however, since it seemed like something he needed to share. As Calder spoke, Jaryd silently made note of the important details until Calder finished with the admission that he had no idea what he was talking about, but wanted to know.
"Well, that could have been a Ward," Jaryd said immediately, ignoring the hyperbole to strike at the heart of the matter. "As a soldier I created a Ward that literally exploded if touched without the key. It seems possible that if I had used Air to hold arrows in place around that Ward, then tripped it, it would have sent those arrows flying at ridiculously high speeds in whatever direction I pointed them." And now, burn the man, he wanted to try. Another day, perhaps.
He looked his friend over thoughtfully. "Before you'll be able to understand the complexity of what you just described, you'll need to know a bit more about how Wards work, I think," he commented. "I discovered my Talent in the Black Tower, which meant I learned to do it in a manner totally different than most of those in the Grey. As annoying as it might be to be instructed by someone you used to get drunk with, I'm probably the best person you could have hoped for."
Calder scowled and muttered something that sounded a whole lot like a curse; Jaryd just laughed, and flipped a coin onto the ground. "Watch," he said. Then he seized saidin, reveling for a brief moment in the glory that was his. He wove Air, Spirit, and thin flows of Fire in a net that he placed in a dome over the coin. When he tied off the flows, the weave remained for Calder to examine.
"This is a fairly simple Ward with my own special 'zing'," Jaryd said. "Touching it may be unpleasant, but won't actually damage you," he added mischievously.

"Whoa, Jaryd. Way too fast!" The Soldier exclaimed as he tried following the threads his friend was weaving. He could see air, spirit and fire woven. As he watched, he tried remembering every detail, trying to mimic the results. But seeing the end result of his work, he frowned and let the weave dissipate. "Far too fast." He muttered again.
"From the amount of fire…" He muttered, as he tried looking upon the weave. He knew his supposed gift did not quite work that way, but the least he could do was try. As sharp as his eyes were, he could make no sense of it. It seemed relatively harmless. Such a small amount of fire would only give such a ward a bit of a kick.
Looking upon his friend, his train of thought changed. Jaryd, knowing Calder enjoyed playing cards, was probably only bluffing himself. Who taught someone who occasionally struggled with Saidin a potentially dangerous weave?
"Your ward's only function is to alert if anyone steps through it." He said said, hoping he was correct. Turning around, he walked a few paces from his friend. But he then turned again, offered Jaryd a knowing wink, and took several rushed steps forward, punting the ward.
His ears were ringing, and his ankle was throbbing. He did not quite understand what was going on, but he did take a good look at the busty Accepted rushing over to check if he was alright. Why is the sky so bloody blue?
"What are you bloody saying?" He asked groggily, her voice sounding as if it came through a bathtub full of dirt thick water. "And why am i laying down?"
He vaguely wondered where Jaryd was, as his head spun slightly.
