An Unusual Missive (Fanfic)

Papers spread about Leala's desk as she sorted through documents and letters from House Gymorraine's lands. She kept her rooms impeccably clean at all times, but there were certain, small instances when her desk was full, like when she received reports from her contacts and keepers. It was the usual, legers and inventories of farms in villages that were overseen. She kept record of everything that had happened since her mother gave her the title of Head of House Gymorraine, and she had kept up with the records that she had inherited as well. Today, though, one letter stood out in particular. It was written in a neat, tight hand, and it was sealed with a simple Flame of Tar Valon. Before she even opened it, she knew where it came from. If another Aes Sedai had wished to reach out to her from the Grey Tower, she would have simply received a message from them within the Tower. This must have been from an Aes Sedai from the White Tower. This should be interesting, she concluded. Aes Sedai from the White and Grey Towers did not always see eye to eye. The White Tower had history and tradition on its side while the Grey Tower had the future and forward thinking on its side. When she took the ring and banner for House Gymorraine, there was certainly a stir within the court. After all, that history and tradition on the White Tower's side stretched to the court of Caemlyn. Leala made sure that her fellow courtiers knew that she would represent her house before she would represent the Grey Tower in matters of the court.

Embracing Saidar, Leala checked for wards. When she found none, she broke the seal and read the letter.

Lady Leala Gymorraine,

She very nearly burned the letter right then as anger washed through her. They did not recognize her as Aes Sedai, which meant that they had a less than favorable opinion of the Grey Tower and its members as well. She looked back at the letter and resolved to correct that as soon as possible. Perhaps they simply wished to address her as one overseeing her lands.

I am currently traveling in Andor and have stopped in the Four Kings. You and your House Gymorraine seem to be quite well known here, as well as your association with the Grey Tower. My sisters and I wish to visit your family's manor after we have finished our business, if this is permissible.

Leala lay the letter down and thought on it. This Aes Sedai obviously would not wait for permission. The date that she gave when they would be arrive was a little more than a week in the future. She had sisters with her, then. There could be any number of reasons that they wished to visit her lands, rather than see her in the Grey Tower, and none of them were good. Well, some of them were simply neutral, but she would not meet with them by herself. The letter was signed by someone calling herself "Rossanda Sedai of the Red Ajah." Her thoughts immediately went to the Keeper of the Archives. An Asha'man of the Red Ajah who was raised to the status of Keeper would definitely be of key interest to them. A grin crept onto her face as she thought of their reaction to that. She would need to take other Asha'man as well.

Smoothly and purposefully, she took a sheet of paper and began to write a message to Jaryd Kosari. She would meet with him first, then with the Grey Ajah to decide how this would be handled.
