Johan
Johan wasn’t sure why he had admitted all that he just had, and he could feel his cheeks burning slightly with embarrassment. It was typical that this was happening with the Mistress of Arms. It couldn’t have been just another Ji’val, could it? Or he couldn’t possibly have had things go smoothly here.
Trying his best not to let it show just how much he was bothered by the whole thing, he unbuckled his sword belt and placed both sword and sheath to the side. He didn’t want the sword to hinder his movements, perhaps tangle in his legs, or anything like that. After all, you didn’t fight with your sword still sheaved. He wanted things to be as close to normal as possible.
He quickly tested the weight of the practice sword to try and get a feel for it. Some, he knew, were often weighted, made heavier than the actual sword to build strength in the muscle, but this one wasn’t any heavier than his own sword.
Finally, he looked back at Riahana, taking another deep breath. He didn’t try and feel calm, but he let his frustration come to the fore, let it drive him forward and give weight to his blows.
And then he was moving.
He thrust with his sword, the point aimed at Riahana’s throat, but already knowing that the strike would be blocked. He had test, to see, to assess her own reactions and formulate a plan from that. He pulled back, making sure to keep his sword raised, ready to block any incoming attack. He kept his balance central at all times, his knees slightly bent, one foot slightly in front of the other, even when he moved. It would make it harder for him to lose his balance or trip or fall. You could hardly defend if your stance, your whole body, wasn’t solid.
He sprang forward again, this time feinting to the left and then the right, following with a slashing, arcing blow, very similar to one of the forms she had shown him. That was followed by another strike, the moves bleeding and flowing into each other so that they were continuous, very like the steps in a dance.
There was a certain grace to his moves, a certain confidence. They weren’t completely polished, but they probably never would be. You couldn’t take the Rahad from him.
