The door closed behind Elia with a soft thud.
Mirin moved quickly. From a hook in her dressing room, she removed a dark riding cloak and threw it around her shoulders. Then she went down to the stables, where a groomsman saddled a horse for her. Soon she was galloping out the gates of the Tower.
It did not take long for her to find him. After all, she knew exactly where he was going. And he had not made it far. She found him on a road east of Hama Valon. This route saw little traffic, perfect for a convict making his escape; or for the Black sister's purpose as well. As she approached, Henrick turned and saw her. He panicked and scrambled to the side of the rode into the tangled brush of the forest.
And got stuck in the brambles. Mirin laughed. Stupid.
She dismounted and advanced on him. The paleness of her face contrasted sharply with her dark hair and cloak. She appeared calm, but there was an unnatural cruel delight in her eyes as she watched his face twist in fear. He held his hands before him in a symbolic gesture to ward off evil.
"B-begone, witch!" he cried. "May the Creator strike you down in his mercy! May you burn forever in the Pit of Doom!"
Her lip curled. "Murderer," she said.
"N-no! I-I walk in the Light!"
Mirin did not like killing. She had chosen, after all, to pose as a sister of the Blue Ajah and usually preferred letting the courts of justice do their work. But in Henrick's case, she could not wait. She was too involved. She needed to hide her evidence. A weave of Compulsion reduced him to a worshipful fool.
"Come out from there," she said. Henrick had no choice. With a dazed expression, he crawled out from the brambles. Light scratches covered his arms, and more than a few twigs stuck out of his hair.
"Walk forward." He did as she asked, exposing his back. Mirin took a knife from the back of her belt.
He crumpled like a rag doll. She rummaged through his belongings, careful not to dirty herself with blood, and found his papers. A simple weave of Fire and Air transformed them to ash. His food and money, too, was taken. When she was done, it looked like Henrick had simply fallen afoul of a regular highway robbery. She observed her handiwork with a keen eye and satisfied smile, and then quietly returned to the Tower.
