Prewtez
The clack, clack, clack of wood against wood as practice swords clashed could not match the intoxicating ring of steel upon steel yet it helped confirm Prewtez’s initial assessment of the combatants. Both men knew their way around a blade. Adrian Danethor had held rank in the forces of an Andoran Noble House. It was doubtful he could have survived long enough without some skill with the sword. And the Shienaran, Ravak Darrow, had probably grown up with a wooden sword in his hand, imagining defending the Borderlands from the denizens of the Blight. Weren’t all Shenaran males trained for combat as soon as they were big enough to hold a greatsword?

The Ji smiled as he observed Darrow take his stance and then launch his attack. The man may not know the forms but he did a fair approximation of The Ox Lowers His Horns before moving into the Willow Embraces the Breeze. Of course the names themselves were superfluous, meant only to convey the position and movement of the body. A swordsman trained in the forms did not consciously think of each form as he flowed through them, focused within the Void. The names were merely tools to help in practice, until the form became a part of one’s subconscious. An observer, such as he was at the moment, might name each form as the fighters moved through them, but a true swordsman could not spare it a thought. Sparing thoughts for such things usually ended up in defeat, as he knew too well from his early sparring with the Gaidar Captain. But now each form was simply a part of him, as was the positioning and footwork that accompanied them. Again, he had Riahana Gaidar to thank. She was a stern teacher, exactly what he had needed.

He nodded in approval as Ravak sought to offset his disadvantage in size by getting inside Adrian’s guard. Again, Prewtez had learned through painful experience than the bigger and stronger did not always possess an advantage in this form of fighting. Both men were light on their feet, both apparently finding their own void. He wondered, though, if the Andoran was used to fighting in a shield wall, a neighbor protecting his exposed flank, as the man rushed an attack, exposing his right side to a counter strike. Would the Shienaran grasp it?

Ravak Darrow
Ravak found some respect for the Andoran as he barely dodged his close strike. He was sure that his sword was going to hit more than wood. Repositioning himself on Adrian's other side, he frowned at himself. Why hadn't he wreathed himself in the ko'di. The thought barely registered before he pushed the world away from thought; he had been frequently adopting the ko'di as instructed by d'Grayson since yesterday.

Calm within the emptiness, Ravak parried two of the Soldier's attacks, sidestepping away from the third. Adrian was using his greater reach to keep the Shienaran away. Rav shifted his posture, attempting a trick he had learnt as a boy. Thoughts of playing with larger boys didn't touch his mind within the ko'di, but the experience of beating them was engrained in his actions.

Rav registered the Andoran's attack, the bundle of lathes moving towards his off-hand shoulder. He also observed the opening that Adrian had left. Blocking the attack with an overhead rebuke, he made sure to push the other man a little off-balance. Using this fraction of extra time before Adrian could recover, Rav swung his own lashings of wood at the man's right flank. There was an audible crack as the loose canes struck true at the end of his sword, only slightly dampened by the Soldier's black tunic. Even removed from emotion as he was, the redhead waiting for Adrian to recover before moving to strike again.

Wood clacked in the air between the two men as they traded easy blocks with one another. Once again looking to put the other man off, Rav switched both his stance and his dominant sword-arm. His right hand now gripped the handle above his left. He watched for a sign of unease from the Andoran, now facing a right-handed sword user. Taking what he perceived as a momentary hesitation, Rav swung the sword in a sweeping arc, aimed directly at Adrian's left flank.
OOC: I sought, and received, permission to hit Adrian during this exchange.

Adrian gasped as the wooden lathes struck with a sickening thud on his right flank. The Void trembled. He forced the pain into the Flame, cloaking himself in cold focus. The pain faded to a dull throb.

If he had still been a boy, he might have glared at the man in hot anger. He would have struck back with growing desperation and fury, and perhaps lost his temper. But as the years had passed, Adrian had learned patience. Now, he knew the benefits of restraint. His anger was turned inward and fed to the Flame. He gripped the hilt of his sword with icy determination. Perhaps he would not win this spar - but he could learn. And he would learn, as fast as he could. If he was not a strong channeler, if he could not gain the cord of the Asha'man by talent alone, then by the Light he could outwork them all!

The two men traded strikes, each blocking the other. Sweat dampened his tunic, but Adrian did not notice. He was enveloped in the Void. But he did notice when his opponent traded hands. What the - ?! He had little time to react as the sword swept toward his left flank.

Not again, he thought.

He moved almost instinctively and stepped forward with his left foot. He turned slightly, offering the fleshy part of his back as a sacrifice to the blow. As he moved, he brought his weapon in a quick strike at Ravak's own exposed stomach.

Ravak's sword hit his back heavily, but it was not disabling. Still, Adrian hissed through his teeth. Light, it hurt! When their instructor called for a halt, he pulled apart from Ravak. The Void dissipated and his hand automatically went to his bruise. He gingerly touched the area, wincing as he imagined the colors that his skin would turn.

Prewtez
“Cease!” he barked over the sound of sparring practice swords, “Arms down now.” Prewtez waited for the men to comply.

The Drin had certainly gotten the better of the Soldier, but Prewtez was pleased in the way Adrian had reacted after Ravak had landed the first blow. The man had the demeanor of a soldier. If the strike to his side proved not to be a disabling one, he would fight on, keeping emotions in check. Prewtez knew one rarely escaped a spar unscathed.

As for Ravak Darrow, that was certainly a neat trick, changing hands. Prewtez didn’t know many who were as proficient with their off hand as they were their dominant one. Was Ravak? Or Had he simply gotten lucky? An interesting man indeed.

“You have both fought well,” he praised them, “You have confirmed my judgement of your skills.”

“We shall reconvene here in the Sparring Arena exactly one week from today, at three hours after Early,” he informed them, “The two of you will spar with me. If you wish to discuss your tactics ahead of time, by all means feel free, I would not consider it an unfair advantage.”

Prewtez moved over and lifted the sack he had placed outside the ring. He withdrew two books and handed one to each of the men.
“This is the definitive work regarding sword forms, written by a Blademaster from Artur Hawkwing’s time. While many forms have been added since, I think you’ll find this more than an adequate starting point if you wish to master the forms.” He waited as each man leafed quickly through the volume.

“Adrian Danethor, as a channeler you might not wish to concern yourself with such a study. You already possess the skills to defend yourself adequately against some attacks. In addition to the One Power, you might also acquire a Warder one day, so the choice is yours. No one will think less of you if you choose not to pursue such a demanding regimen.” Prewtez then faced the Drin. “On the other hand, Ravak Darrow, I highly encourage you to follow the path I and many others here in the Yard have taken. As a future Warder it is imperative you hone your fighting prowess as sharp as possible. If the sword be your weapon of choice, learning the forms becomes a necessity.”

“Until next week, then; May you walk in the Light,” dismissing the men, Prewtez turned to collect his sword belt. He wasn’t sure if Ravak would take his advice to heart. The man was an excellent fighter already, and those were the hardest to convince. He hoped he would show both men a thing or two about sword fighting next session.

Ha! As if I would ever be able to rely on the One Power, Adrian thought. Then, he recalled some of the destructive weaves that had been taught at the Black Tower. Although Adrian was not strong enough to replicate any of those weaves, Prewtez did have a point. What could a sword do against an explosion?

And as for a Warder, well, Adrian thought that he would rather trust a man than a woman to guard his back. But he couldn't even begin to imagine what bonding another man would be like. He shivered lightly. No, he did not want another man in his mind. A woman, however... he glanced surreptitiously around the yard, and noted that many of the women training in the Yards were quite attractive, with lean, fit bodies that twisted rather lithely as they sparred. Perhaps he would rather bond a woman after all.

He bowed when Prewtez dismissed them, and then left for his room to shower and study for his next class.

-----
The next week, Adrian showed up at the Warder Yards early to stretch. He had spent the week learning and practicing some of the forms from the guidebook and was eager to see if he had improved. As he stretched, he considered the upcoming lesson.

Two versus one, he thought. The odds weren't as imbalanced as they seemed. The Ji'alantin was clearly a very proficient and battle-hardened swordsman - and, the spar would be complicated by the fact that Adrian and Ravak would have to take care to stay out of each other's way. However, the two men had spoken briefly of strategies to surprise their teacher. Adrian smiled. Although he didn't dare to hope to win, he thought that they could show Prewtez a trick or two.

Ravak Darrow
Ravak regarded the book with undisguised interest, once he was back in the confines of his own room. He didn't recognise the author, but took it as read that the Ji knew what he was talking about. He would have to start digging around the library for more books by blademasters, once he had concluded his own research project.

He spent the two hours after breakfast each day working with the forms, using both his longsword and his sword-breaker. He only used one at a time, and the latter he only used in his off-hand. The sword-breaker only had a short blade, about two-thirds the length of the other one, and in time he would become proficient in using both swords at the same time. However, that wasn't going to happen over the next week.

When the following week's spar came along, Ravak had already been in the yard for an hour. His longsword lay nearby as he moved through some of the forms, wrapped within the emotionless focus of the oneness. Or the Void, or ko'di. It had an number of different terms, and Rav liked none of them more than the others. He moved through the forms as individual set pieces, instead of as a singular manoeuvre. He could flow from certain forms into others, but not for every form. The Rose Unfolds put the Fal Daran too off-balance to do anything other than return to a defensive stance afterwards. Then there was Leopard in the Tree which he had some understanding of, but he didn't know how to move into anything other than Unfolding the Fan afterwards. Most of the time he just slid his sword out of his scabbard without form.

When the third hour after Early came along, Rav stood in attendance with the two Andorans. He gave a knowing nod to Adrian, and a respectful salute to Prewtez.

Prewtez
He had purposely waited until the other two men had arrived before Prewtez made his appearance in the sparring arena. He had waited in order to give them one more chance to discuss how they would fight him. He knew that were he to face multiple opponents in the future, perhaps in defense of his Aes Sedai, they would be men who worked together. This would serve as excellent practice for him as well as his charges. It was not as if he had never fought multiple opponents. Most cavalry engagements devolved into melees, men and horses wheeling about, swords flashing and slashing. But in those engagements the individual combat was quick. He would fend off one attacker and then turn on the other while one of his troopers, as likely as not Darce, took care of the first, allowing Prewtez to concentrates on the other. But he would have no such back up today. It would be two against one, just as he wanted it.

As he stepped into the arena and greeted the men Prewtez noted that the Drin appeared to have been exerting himself prior to the appointed time. Practicing, I imagine, Prewtez thought. Experience had taught him Borderlanders were a determined sort and he doubted Ravak Darrow was an exception. And the Andoran appeared to have limbered up as well. A good sign, as Prewtez had questioned if a man who could channel would truly take physical combat seriously. He wondered if his tardy arrival would give them reason to think he was nervous. He hoped so, any perception of weakness could lead to overconfidence on the part of his opponents. That he could exploit.

Unfastening his sword belt and laying it to the side, Prewtez took up a practice sword and indicated the others should do the same. “Our last session convinced me you are both more than capable of defending yourself. I do not intend to insult you by holding anything back today and I would hope you feel the same. Now, if we are ready, take your stances please.”

Embracing the void, Prewtez wasted no time. With both hands on the hilt of his sword, he moved slowly, warily, looking from Adrian to Ravak, watching for an attack. The Leopard in the High Grass became The Cyclone on the Plain as he windmilled his blade, bringing it full circle before lashing into the Lizard In the Thornbush. His initial thrust was towards Ravak to keep the man off balance, spinning to one knee he thrust towards Adrian’s abdomen before retreating back to The Leopard stance.

Ravak Darrow
Ravak spun the wooden sword in his hand, the same showy display that he had done as a child. He gave himself a moment to reminisce, days spent playing swords as a boy. That boy and those memories were then pushed away, consumed by an emptiness that filled the whole world. Thoughts of home, fondness of friends, the nervousness he felt going against this Ji, all slid away into the background of his mind. The Ji was still there, both hands firmly on his sword's hilt, moving in a patient and measured walk. Adrian too was there, on the other side of d'Grayson, getting ready to strike.

The Ji'alantin moved defensively, spinning his blade in a full circle around himself, forcing the two younger men back. Ravak stepped into the space left in the blade's wake, his sword held horizontal in anticipation for blocking. He knew this form as the Leaf Floating on the Breeze, but the name didn't matter. What mattered was Prewtez's attack, a thrust aimed straight at the Shienaran's chest; he had expected a slash. His sword moved to block, but the minute hesitation meant that the tip was deflected into his shoulder instead of away from his body altogether. A hissing cry came out of Rav's mouth, but that was a instinctive reaction. He knew to move back, to work on the defensive in spite of how d'Grayson was surrounded. The Drin adopted the Creeper Embraces the Oak, making a slow circle around his target, moving the blade to safeguard against various strikes. Prewtez was back in the Leopard in High Grass, his brown eyes darting from Rav to Adrian.

A rictus snarl developed in Rav's chest, as he moved to attack the Ji. He thrust out with his left arm fully extended, then repeated the attack twice more. That was Lightning of Three Prongs, but his intention was not to hit, but to distract from what his partner intended.

Adrian took up his practice sword and moved into a defensive crouch. He stood on the opposite side from Ravak. For a brief moment, he met Ravak's eyes - then he looked away and enveloped himself in the cold focus of the Void.

Adrian moved slowly to his left in The Swallow Glides to the Branch, his sword held at a diagonal across his chest. Prewtez made the first move by spinning his blade in a defensive circle. Adrian glided back, dodged the blade, and then met Prew's thrust with The Sapling Trembles, a basic slash to his attacker's wrists.

But his blade was deflected. The three men settled again into defensive stances. Adrian heard Ravak's snarl before he saw the attack. He recognized the form as Lightning of Three Prongs - and in response, when Prew turned to face the onslaught from the Shienaran, Adrian moved forward, swiftly and silently, his blade slashing at his instructor in The Boar Rushes Down the Mountain.

Prewtez
During their brief courtship Lorena had taught him to dance and the two would glide across the floor in perfect synchronization. Riahana Gaidar had helped Prewtez develop such footwork into a lethal aspect of his swordsmanship. Within the Void he would not feel his approval of his opponents’ avoidance of his initial attack. That would come later, after the spar was done. Nor did he consciously identify the forms they employed. Lightning of Three Prongs was a tried and true attack form, one he himself often employed. But the snarl the Drin emitted told him the man may be giving way to emotion. Or was it meant as a distraction? Twisting the Wind, thrusting at Ravak, spinning and slashing at Adrian, footwork practiced and sure, body spinning from one to the other and back again, looking for an opening.

Avoiding the Soldier’s downward slash of The Boar Rushes Down the Mountain, Prewtez leaped forward punching his sword hand towards Adrian’s face in Soft Rain at Sunset and pulling back with practice blade gliding along the man’s face just below the eye. Pushing against Adrian, Prewtez spun back towards Ravak, deflecting his blade with a quick parry, then stepping inside the smaller man’s guard, Black Pebbles On Snow, a downward slash of his blade at the man’s ribs.
