Andor

Dianlinn listened carefully as the Asha'man Barad al'Sheara spoke of Malkier and what had happened to it. She knew the story, of course, the Aiel spoke of it. And it seemed the Aiel had most of the facts right, as it went, and she nodded her head, not making notes on the subject, as she knew the facts as it was. But to hear the man before them telling it, she could almost imagine what had happened, seeing it in her mind. They were the best kind of stories, of course. Whenever she had gotten her hands on a story book, she always hoped they would contain a battle, and maybe a girl coming along to save the day. But alas, there was no one who could save Maklier, and only a couple of the Guards survived to deliver the babe safely into the hands of someone to protect him. It was a sad story indeed, one to make even the Aiel weep, though she would not let her water flow here and now, before these people who would not understand.

As the subject changed to Andor, the land where they were now, she listened intently. She did not know much about this land, except that it usually had a female ruler. And that was one of the facts that the Asha'man spoke of. She did take some notes then, looking at the map of the capital city and frowning slightly. It looked so enclosed. So many walls. Good for defending, but to live there, surely not. She did not asked a question, or voice her opinion this time, just listened instead. There were plenty of people who would want to talk, who liked the sound of their own voices, and she would listen to what they said and the answers they received. It seemed like Andor was one of the richest of the lands, and she listened intently as it was spoken of only a woman could rule the Lion Throne and wear the Rose Crown. Dianlinn wondered if the items were ter'angriel in some way, and they would only accept a woman, or if it was tradition. She could respect tradition, after all it was what the Aiel were raised on.

We are in Andor… Zhen wrote down on his paper as he listened. He continued to take notes, nodding his head along with the other’s words as he spoke. His pen moved fast, softly scratching the paper as they went along. He did pause, however, when the Asha’man used the One Power to move things about the room. He stared at this, seeming in awe of it more than he was afraid of it. He still wasn’t quite used to seeing Channelers out and about, mingling right in with everyone else. He blinked as he shook himself from his thoughts. Recalling the last few sentences, he marked down Caemlyn, and made a mental note to visit it one day. He would like to see a beautiful city, especially if it was famously beautiful.

He saw the pained look cross the face of the man as he spoke of the ‘Daughter-Heir’ studying in Tar Valon. He didn’t know the reason for this, of course, but perhaps he would find out later. He wrote down what the other explained about the way that throne worked and noted next to it that it seemed similar to his Sh’boan and Sh’botay, who passed on their rule to their spouse upon death, who would remarry. It was interesting to think that a throne could pass through a bloodline instead of a union. Still, he had learned many places did these things so very differently…

When questions were opened, he listened quietly as the girl to the side stated her fact about riches. He thought about this for a moment, and made a quick note of it in his book. Then he lifted his hand. When he was called upon, he asked. “Asha’man? How does one know before their birth that a daughter is worthy of rule? What if the child is not fit for it? Do they rule a country anyway?” This seemed folly, really, and it was hard to wrap his head around.

Andor

Barad looked to the Novice, Talaitha, all in white as she speaks of the riches that were indeed mined in the Mountains of Mist. He nodded to her, and smiled. "That is very astute, Novice. It is one reason why the Monarchy want to keep such a grasp on this area, though to be fair most villages this far out have not seen a Queens guard or tax collector for generations." He chuckled, "This is part of Andor almost in name only." He added, before looking around and listening to some of the other students answers. Most were right on most things, but he corrected where needed.

When Zhenquan asked about the babes nature before she was grown, he raised an eyebrow to him. He was starting to wonder where he was from more and more if he did not understand how a monarchy worked. He sat back down on the edge of his desk. "There is no way of knowing, not truly. But as the girl grows, she more than likely has the best tutors to teach her how to be wise and fair." He paused, "No, it has not always happened that way, but it is also down to the Queen and the girls Father to make sure she is ready when the time comes." He pushed himself up, and let his hands fall down by his side. "In a monarchy, the throne is usually passed down through blood, though there are some places in the Westlands that are ruled by a council that has been voted in."

He clapped his hands together, and rubbed them. "But that will be part of our next lesson. Class is done for now." He told them, moving to his desk. "If you wish to know more of the countries we have covered so far, then a trip to the Library would be in order. If you took notes, then you can expand on them, and ask the Sisters of the Brown Ajah to suggest the best books." He nodded to them as they began to rise, as he seized saidin and rolled up the map behind him.

Tala smiled as Asha'man al Sheara told her that her answer was very astute. She smiled to him, and nodded her head in thanks. It was one of the many little facts that her Father had told her about as they had travelled the land looking for the Lost Song. She had learned little facts from him that he had learned at his Father's knee, and his Father before him. In some ways the Tuatha'an were the keepers of stories from the past. Though not all the stories, obviously, but they did know things that others did not. And she had been on her way to learning these things, before she had been left behind by her Band. That betrayal still hurt even after all this time, and while she had been trying to forget a lot of her life before, now she knew she would need to dig into those memories up all over again. And that meant she would feel the pain of missing her family and friends all over again.

She looked to the strange boy, Zhenquan, as he asked about the ruling babe being worthy or right to serve as Queen. She blinked. Did he not understand what a Monarchy was? Things were passed down through birth mostly here, and had always been, as far as anyone knew. Even before Artur Hawking, and after him. After all, did not his Sons try to take over his Empire? Though it did not work out well for them, or so she had heard in various stories. She focused back to the Asha'man, and listened as he answered the other boy. She wished she could place his accent, but it was so different to any she had heard before. And she had heard most.

As Asha'man Barad al Sheara dismissed them from the lesson, she collected her papers, with her notes on, and placed them into the folder for her to write out better later. She stood, and made her way out of the class, bobbing a curtsy to the Asha'man and thanking him for the class. He really is quite dreamy. She blushed at the thought and hurried along quickly knowing she had to get to the other side of the Tower for her next class. She liked Herb Lore, but it always ended with her getting her dress filthy, and then she had to be perfect to attend lunch, which meant she had to rush back to her room and change.

When his question was answered, Zhen frowned in thought. It sounded like such a strange, silly way of passing down the importance of governing. Far too much seemed like it could go wrong… Then again, if it was the way the Wheel wished for these people, it would be silly of him to question it. He nodded slowly. When they were dismissed, he watched in silent awe as the other clearly channeled again to fold up the map. It was something he did not think he would ever get used to. He wasn’t jealous of it, he knew the responsibility of channelers was more than he could ever bare, but it was still like seeing the wheel made flesh walking around him every day.

He stood from his desk slowly and gathered his notes. There were many, and he wanted to pour over them. His next period was a free study period, and he planned on going straight to the Library and researched what he had learned. Perhaps a Brown would be able to tell him why they entrusted a child’s birth with the governing of a country. And what happened if there was no child? His head buzzed with curiosities (which was nothing new) as he lifted his notes into his arms and started out of the classroom.

Dianlinn was also interested in this idea of a Monarchy, it was not something that the Aiel kept to themselves. Just because your Father was a Clan Chief or your Mother was a Wise One, it did not mean you would take over their place when you came of age or when their time in the dream ended. For you to become a Clan Chief or a Wise One you were called to such, you had to prove yourself and be respected in the Clan. It had nothing to do with who your Mother was, or what blood runs in your veins. And the idea of such was weird to her, and she looked over to Zhenquan, knowing how he would be feeling over such a thing. Puzzled and amused no doubt.

When the Asha'man Barad al Sheara dismissed the class, Dianlinn stood and stretched, sitting on the wooden seats was strange to her, and left her back feeling achy. But she would run that off soon, and she knew she had to get used to chairs, but she was no Clan Chief to sit on a wooden chair, but the Wetlanders seemed to prefer it to the floor. Strange indeed. But then everything seemed strange here, one way or another, it was why she had to pay such attention to classes like this as well as her fighting. She could not be left feeling less by her lack of knowledge of the lands and customs here.

Knowing she had a free period until dinner, so she planned to go for a run, work the kinks out of her back, and then she would head to the Library, and ask the Aes Sedai and Asha'men to suggest titles for her to read to get to know what she needed to about the customs and rulers of the nations here. Ducking her way out of the classroom, she moved from the classroom area, and out towards the training grounds. There she stretched and began to run.
