The playfulness lasted but a moment, yet had felt like something he'd almost forgotten what it felt like. Not that he was terribly out of humor in his life, but it was easy for Gaidin to get lost in the routines of their lives. The training, or the tasks, or the missions. This was a little different, and he liked it.

Soon it was back to business, but that was fine as well. He let Tia handle the talking while he lingered at her shoulder, the silent presence who was there to safeguard her.

It wasn't anything that anyone would bat an eye at here, of course. It allowed for a very easy rhythm. Their horses were taken care of and they were directed on to the office of the commander of the Citadel. They reached the door and she asked if he was ready. He stifled a smile at the question and simply inclined his head.

"Of course," he said simply.

The door was shut, so Bryn took the liberty of knocking. Upon being called to enter, he opened the door and took that habitual protective look inside before staying back to let Tia go before him before he followed, shutting the door behind them.

Tia Sedai
Tia flashed Bryn a wry smile before she stepped in,and the smile turned warm as she stepped into the office and up to the desk opposite the door. The man in uniform behind the desk stood and inclined his head, “Tia Sedai, it is good to see you once again. I, well, many of us have wondered how soon you’d be visiting us when we heard you were no longer Mistress of Novices.”

“So Sebastian mentioned when he greeted us as we came through the gate. He said something about my room being ready? I can’t believe you went to that kind of trouble for me. . .for us, Commander Hastings,” Tia couldn’t help but sound quizzical.

“I’m afraid that might be my doing, as I teased we should have a room ready. I’m sure you won’t mind not having to wait to retire to your rooms once we are done here,” he replied. Then looking to Bryn, he gave a slight nod, “It is good to see you once again, Brynmor Gaidin.” Looking to Tia, he then asked, “I’m assuming you two are traveling together?”

Tia wasn’t sure why he was asking her, but she nodded, “We are, and we wondered if there was anything or anyone you thought could use our assistance?”

Hastings nodded before looking to his desk and shuffling papers aside, “Actually, there is something that could use your attention. There is a small settlement perhaps two or three days ride from here. A man came here on foot and said they’d been having trouble with bandits and Trollocs. We asked for details, but he wasn’t able to provide more than that.”

“Is he still here?” Tia asked.

The Commander shook his head, “I’m sorry. He said he needed to get back to his family and farm. We gave him provisions, and tried to give him a pony to get him back quicker, but he refused. Said he didn’t have enough to feed the pony once he got back. From the sounds of it, the settlement isn’t exceptionally well off.” He slid a map over to her and Bryn, “The settlement is apparently somewhere around here.

Tia leaned over to get a better look at the map, her eyes following the main road from the Citadel, noticing the shortest route to where the settlement should be. Looking over to Bryn, she asked, “What do you think? I’m thinking that’s closer to a three day ride from here.”

Bryn nodded in response to the greeting, but otherwise kept silent. This was Tia's to lead, and he would follow. Trouble in a settlement? Well, that was something they could do. Bandits or Trollocs, though? Should it not have been easy to tell the difference? Still, he wasn't going to make that comment just yet.

Tia looked at the map, and he stepped in closer to do the same. He eyed the distances. "We could do it in closer to two, but only with a push," he mused aloud. "The man, however, would have had a far longer journey if he was on foot." Not necessarily important, but one never knew what might be later.

"When did the man leave?" he asked the other man.

"About two days ago."

Bryn snorted a laugh, then glanced side long at Tia. "If we left first thing in the morning, we might reach his village before he does."

Tia Sedai
With a wry smile, Tia gave a simple nod, “We may indeed.” She looked up to the Commander, “We’ll leave at first light.”

The Commander looked between the two of them, “Sounds fine. I’ll see to it that the kitchen arranges for provisions for you, and will have them delivered to the stables. Galbion will show you to your quarters. As usual, if you need anything, just stop any of my men, and they’ll see to it.”

“Thank you, Commander,” Tia replied before she and Bryn took their leave.Galbion was waiting for them on the other side of the door, and did indeed escort them to their quarters. The ante-chamber that would act as Bryn’s quarters had a welcoming fire in its hearth, as did the main room. Tia set her saddle bags at the foot of her bed as she looked around.

Galbion cleared his throat, “Will ye be needin’ anythin’ else, Aes Sedai?”

The Green sister was pleased to see a table by the fire, along with two chairs, “My Gaidin and I would like to have a quiet meal here instead of the mess hall. Could you send word to the Mistress of the Kitchens I’d like a plate of whatever meat she’s got roasting and the roasted vegetables to go with it?” She looked to Bryn and flashed a smile, “And. . .whatever you might like as well?”

Bryn's mind was a sequence of tactical thoughts as he considered what little information they had and the area they would be heading to; he was not intimately familiar with every place in the Borderlands, of course, but he had spent enough time as a Gaidin out and around the Citadel to know many of them or of them.

As they reached their rooms, he took note of his own and then the main room and the door that led to the chamber where the Aes Sedai would be sleeping. He looked at these sleeping arrangements with a tinge more...uncertainty?...than he could ever recall feeling on such a mission before, but he didn't give it much thought.

He listened to her speak with the man--Galbion--who had escorted them here, although he did not engage until addressed. "I will have the same as the Aes Sedai," he said simply.

Galbion bowed his head and then stepped out of the room. Bryn put his things away in his section of the suite of rooms and then turned to the Green with a faint half-smile. "It looks like we will not have to wait very long at all for our adventure, or trouble, depending on how one wants to view it."

Tia Sedai
While Bryn took care of his belongings, Tia did the same. She learned over the years to pack light for her trips to the Citadel, and while she didn’t have much, the excursion in the morning meant she’d need to unpack and repack anyway. She’d rather leave room in the saddle bags for provisions instead of the entirety of the wardrobe she brought with her from the Tower.

Her room wasn’t extravagant by any stretch of the imagination, but it did have a wardrobe for her to put her extra clothes. She looked to Bryn as he entered her room and returned his half smile with one of her own, “No, I suppose not, though I can’t say I am terribly surprised. There is rarely a dull moment at the Citadel.” Closing the wardrobe, Tia moved to the bed where she had a spare change of clothes, her heavy cloak, and gloves. She started packing the extra clothes into one of her saddle bags, arranging things so the cloak and gloves were on top.

Looking back to Bryn with an arched brow, she looked puzzled, “I’m not sure what I make of the man’s claim about bandits or Trollcos. It also strikes me odd he would ask for aid and then leave without waiting for someone to go with him. There is part of me that is concerned he hasn’t been wholly honest with the Commander.” She closed the saddle bag and moved to hang it on a hook by the door before gesturing for Bryn to sit by the fire.

“Regardless, we need to investigate, but how the news was delivered has left me feeling. . .unsettled,” the Green added as she eased herself into the chair opposite Bryn.

Unsettled...yes, he was feeling that too, but realized it was more than just the news and their task. He took a seat before the fire, just across from her, although his chair was positioned in such a way that he could see the door from where he sat. Once become a Gaidin, forever and for always a Gaidin.

"I would agree," he said easily. "It is bandits or Trollocs? Even if the man were blind, one would think he could tell the difference. Unless the bandits are wearing giant Trolloc suits...which still, one would be able to tell." His eyes flashed with macabre humor.

He hoped that his Gaidin abilities would not be needed too much on this little excursion deeper into the Blightborder, but he knew enough to know that he couldn't count on that. Working off history alone, chances were that they would be. He would do all he was able to do, and more than that, to protect his charge, though.

Bryn waved a hand. "But with all things, we will not know until it is before us. Maybe this is just a very strange man. It's been known to happen."

Tia Sedai
Tia snorted a laugh with the mention of men in Trolloc suits. “I would love to think it is just a strange man, but I’ve come to find nothing is ever so simple out here on the Blightborder.” She reached up and took the tie out of the end of her hair and began to unbraid it, “But as you say, we will not know until we know.”

Silence settled between them for a moment, and as Tia got her hair fully out of its braid, she looked back to Bryn with a slightly wry smile, “You do realize don’t you? My kin have taken it on themselves to meddle with things, so to speak, and they’ve roped you, unknowingly I assume, into aiding their cause.

“Yes they worry for me coming out here unescorted, but they also know I always have a Gaidin or Ji’Val with me when I leave the walls of the Citadel. I’m not sure if it was Mother or Memma who decided that was no longer good enough,” she replied with a soft laugh.

“Don’t get me wrong. . .I don’t mind their meddling,” she added, tilting her head slightly as she did. The wry smile gave way to a warm one, “If I were honest, I’d have to admit I’m rather glad they did. I find. . .” she hesitated for a moment, “I find I rather like you, Bryn, and it seems now we’ve got a chance to actually get to know one another.”

Bryn's mind jumped to a few different conclusions to what she said, but he tried not to latch onto any of them. He listened strictly to the words she said, nodding slowly. "Well, far it be it from me to deny the...suggestion. The...strong suggestion...of your family," he said with a wry smile, inclining his head slightly. His blue eyes danced around the word "suggestion."

What, exactly, was her family trying to do, however? What knowledge he had of the "Sha'hal Dynasty," as some called it, flashed through his mind. The fact that it even was a 'dynasty' was enough to give him pause.

"To be quite honest, I am also glad for the chance to get to know you better. I fear I am but a Gaidin, so I do not know how interesting I will be for you to know," he said with a self-deprecating smile and slight wave of his hand. "But I find I, well, I rather like you as well--" It was safe to say that, she'd said it first, right? "--and am glad to be here."

Tia Sedai
Tia laughed softly and flushed a little at the mention of her kin ‘strongly suggesting’ he join her on her outing. She didn’t know if her family had ulterior motives or if they just wanted someone they knew and could trust looking out for her given recent events. Either way, here he was with those eyes of his and that smile. She felt a bit more heat on her cheeks, but dared not look away.

The Green shook her head slightly, “I wonder what it is that makes Gaidin so humble, or why you might think you won’t be so interesting for me to know.” Giving a bemused smile, she replied, “I know you’ve not forgotten my mother is a Gaidin and has been one for many years, and I think most would agree her life has been anything but boring. My guess is the same could be said for you.

“Never mind that I know little of you aside from the brief conversations we’ve had since we met. I know you’ve been a Gaidin for some time, and I’m sure have your own stories to tell, though you may not think them more than things that had to be done while someone like me might consider them fascinating,” she added with a wry grin.
Spoiler: show
OOC: do you want to save both of them from what could quickly turn into an awkward conversation and have dinner arrive? lol
