The Beginning of Lessons (Attn: Elan)

Post by Callum » December 4th, 2017, 11:47 am

Kylin walked quickly down the corridor, a small slip of paper clutched tightly in his hand. The note had been passed to him at breakfast by a Novice who's name he didn’t know. He had been here little over a week but that’s was hardly enough time to learn the names of every Novice and Solider in the Tower, there was just too many of them here for anyone to learn all their names in that time.

The slip of paper had been instructions to attend an extra class in one of the smaller rooms in the Tower. It wasn't one he had ever been in before and he wasn't sure exactly where he was going. He had a rough idea but it was still a bit of a guessing game for him to find the room.

He had to admit that he was looking forward to this class. While he had had many classes only a couple had been channelling based. Most had been intended to ensure that all of the new Novices and Soldiers were equal in their non-channelling abilities such as reading, maths or history, before continuing in their training.

He doubted that anyone in those classes was close to equal to him or would be by the end of the class. He had spent the best part of his life studying in one of the greatest libraries in the world and had gained much knowledge.

He realised suddenly that he had reached the room. He had been so lost in thought that he hadn't realised that he had reached the area of the Tower where his class was to take place. He stopped walking outside the room and, after hesitating for a moment, knocked on the door and waited. He wasn't sure if there was anyone in the room but he assumed it would be better to knock and find out rather than barge in.

Jaren Marle
The classroom was one of the smaller ones, not meant for large group lectures but rather tutoring a handful of students at a time. Today, Jaren was going to be teaching just one. He didn’t often teach classes — at least not outside the Infirmary, where he instructed Dedicated and Accepted quite frequently — but when he’d been asked to take on a student who was scheduled to start learning about Wards, he’d agreed readily enough. The Yellow obviously loved his work in the Infirmary, but a change was nice every now and then.

The student was Cairhienin, by the notes Jaryd had given him; a scion of a noble House, only recently started channelling but making fair progress in his training. And that mattered more, here, than one’s ancestry or family name. That was quickly made clear to any new students who might hold on to any illusions to the contrary, but — again, according to Jaryd’s notes — this Kylin had no record of misbehaviour or problematic attitude. That seemed like a good sign. Or maybe he just hadn't got around to it yet.

The handful of desks in the room were arranged in a semi-circle around the centre of the room, facing a bigger desk that was meant for the teacher. The curtains were drawn aside to let natural light in, though this day the sun was hiding behind a thin veil of clouds. Jaren was sitting on the teacher’s desk when the knock on the door announced that his student had arrived. “Come on in,” he called, giving the Soldier a warm smile as he entered. Jaren gestured around the room. “Please, sit anywhere you like. My name is Jaren Marle, of the Yellow Ajah, and unless I’m badly mistaken, you’re Kylin Riatin here to learn about Wards, yes? First of all, please tell me anything you may already know about Wards, no matter how general.”

Kylin entered the room and took a seat in front of the Asha'man. The room was a small one, obviously not one intended for teaching large groups of students. More likely it was used for teaching small groups or even one to one. He hadn't been in this type of room before. He forced his attention away from the room and back to the more important matter of the Asha'man and his lesson.

"I know some things about wards." He said carefully, he didn't want to exaggerate his knowledge but equally, he didn't want to appear ignorant in front of the Asha'man. "From my understanding, they are weaves which a channeller places around an area or object, usually to protect it. They are usually set in such a way that the channeler does not need to hold them and so that they are hidden from others?" The last bit had come out as a question, something he hadn't meant to happen.

He waited quietly to see what the Asha'man would say. He only knew that much from his reading in the Royal Library. The library contained some books on channelling, not many but a few, and he had read some of them in preparation for his journey here. One of those books had contained information on some of the types of weave which a channeller could perform. It wasn't a technical book but more of a rough guide to what a channeller could achieve, it did not describe how any of the things it talked about would actually be performed. None the less it had helped him to gain an understanding of what he might find here.

Jaren
Kylin seemed like a serious young man, weighing his words carefully even though the topic was harmless and there were no wrong answers at this point. Eager to impress, nervous and trying to hide it, or just genuinely humourless? It was difficult to tell. Either way, Jaren smiled at the Soldier. “That is correct,” he said, “to a point. Hiding the Ward or not depends on the purpose of the Ward, and of course hiding it from other channellers of the same gender requires using inverted weaves. For example a ward to keep insects out generally wouldn’t need to be hidden.” Or at least he couldn’t think of any reason.

“Like you said,” he went on, “Wards can be placed around an object or a space, or even a person. Many channellers find it easier to attach the Ward to physical structures, like the walls of a room, but they can be placed anywhere. And their purpose is, indeed, most commonly to keep something in or out, to protect or to confine… but also other things. The most common Ward against intrusion, for example, isn’t meant to keep intruders out, but simply to warn the channeller when somebody enters the Warded area or touches the Warded object.” That in itself could be deterrent enough for some intruders.

There were Wards that could keep people out altogether — or in; during Ravak Darrow’s misguided inquisition, Jaryd had been ordered to lock the learning ranks inside the Novices’ and Soldiers’ quarters — but they were far more complex than what this lesson would cover, requiring more Power and more than a little Talent to be functional. From a purely academic point of view, Jaren wished he’d been there to see that Ward, though from everything else he’d heard from people who had been in the Tower at the time, he was probably lucky that he’d been away at the Citadel, the siege notwithstanding…

“Some of the most common Wards used in everyday life,” Jaren continued, “are ones against sound. The basic version blocks sound both ways, but a little variation will give you one that blocks sound going out while allowing sounds from the outside to come in.”

He seized saidin and wove fine threads of Spirit into a net in the shape of a dome around himself, then laced in threads of Air, working slowly so that the Soldier could see what he was doing. “When I finish the weave, you won’t be able to hear me speak,” he said. Then he pulled the flows tight, bringing the Ward together. “There we go,” he said into the echoing silence of the Ward. Then he let the Ward dissolve again. “You try that, now.”

Kylin watched and listened intently as the Asha'man talked. It seemed to him that the intended purpose of the ward dictated how you would set up the ward and to what extent you would go to conceal the ward. That made sense he supposed, why go to all the other of hiding a ward when you didn't need to.

He felt the Asha'man embrace Saidin as a slight prickling of danger, not quite fear but unsettling none the less. It was a feeling he knew he would have to get used to, he would be around men channelling for the rest of his life, which could be a very long time indeed. He watched closely as the man made the weave of Spirit and Air. The man went slowly, Kylin guessed this was so he would have time to watch the weave.

He waited until he was told to try the weave then focused on embracing Saidin. He still required a moment of focus to do so although he could now at least consistently embrace the source and make a weave with it without losing his grip on the power. Slowly, and with painstaking care, he began to create the ward. At two points he had to pause briefly to try and remember the weave so that he could continue it but eventually he managed to complete it. He held the completed weave for the Asha'man to inspect.

Jaren
Jaren watched the process in silence, not wanting to distract his student. The Soldier worked methodically, if slowly, and the Ward that eventually came together was perhaps not a masterpiece of elegant weaving but it was a fair replica of the one Jaren had shown him. The weave completed, the Soldier simply… looked up in silence. Jaren’s eyebrows twitched up ever so slightly; truly a man of few words, this Kylin.

“Most students like to test the Ward,” he spoke lightly, “to see for themselves that it does what they were trying to do… But I can tell you it does. It’s a perfectly functional Ward against sound. Well done.” He paused for a second. “Like I said, that’s the basic form of the weave. It can be modified so that you — or the people inside the Ward — can hear sound coming in from the outside, but those on the outside can’t hear you. And there are other variations; for example instead of complete silence, it can be made to create the imitation of indistinct murmur.”

He considered the next part of the lesson for a moment. He’d planned to move on to another basic level Ward once Kylin had managed to create a satisfactory replica of the first Ward, but it was going to be a rather dull lesson if he was doing all the talking. Sure, the Soldier was here to learn, not to socialise, but at present it didn’t seem like the younger man was engaged in the lesson at all, and while Jaren could talk enough for three people if he had to, it would have been nice to have some idea what his student was thinking. Was the subject matter even interesting to him or was he here just because it was part of the curriculum?

“Alright,” he went on, “next I’d like you to tell me what kind of Wards you find the most interesting, or what you imagine would be the most useful.” That was a question to which there were no wrong answers, so the Soldier should be able to reply without overthinking it too much. Though, of course, he was Cairhienin, and from what Jaren had seen, overthinking was what Cairhienin did.

As usually Kylin took a moment to consider before he spoke. In this case he was sorting threw the types of wards he knew about in his head and deciding what he found interacting or useful.

“I would say that the use would depend upon the situation. Some wards would be better suited to some situations than to others.” He paused briefly and took a deep before continuing.

“As for what ones I find personally interesting are Wards which keep things in, the idea of being able to protect or contain that which you want. And I suppose that they must be the among the most important Wards in the world.” He spoke quick, far faster than usual.

What he didn’t say was why he thought they were the most important. For one thing he wasn’t sure he was right in his assumptions and for a second it wasn’t the kind of conversation he wanted to have with an Asha’man even if he was right. The reason he thought that containment wards were the most important was because they were the kind of wards which held the Dark One, or at least he assumed they were.

The Seals were made by men and held the Dark One in. It made sense to him, although he wasn’t sure of it. He would need to do some study on it. The idea that the seals were wards had only occurred to him five minutes ago when the Asha’man has been explain what wards could do. He realised suddenly that he had been so lost in though that he had stopped paying attention. He quickly forced he focus away from his thoughts and back to the lesson.

Jaren
That was a good answer, though there were no right or wrong answers to the question; though the Soldier’s demeanour didn’t change dramatically, he seemed somehow more earnest and less calculated as he spoke. Wanting to protect that which was important to you was a sentiment Jaren could relate to and sympathise with, and he nodded with a smile.

“You’re right,” he said, “on both counts. Even within the subclass of Wards that keep things in or out there are a lot of variations for different kinds of things. The simplest ones are for things like keeping insects or vermin out— We don’t have any of those here in the Tower, largely because of Wards like these already in place, so I can’t demonstrate that it works, but I can still show you the Ward.”

He seized saidin again and began to weave a net of Spirit in the form of a small dome, adding delicate threads of Air and Earth once the Spirit part was complete. “This version keeps out insects, and if you make the flows of Earth a little thicker,” and he demonstrated that as he spoke, “it will repel small vermin like rats, and ravens.” That was useful on several levels; rats might carry diseases, and rats and ravens and others like that could be used as spies by the Dark One’s servants. “If you change the flows even more, adjust the Air like this,” he divided the threads of Air into a more complex pattern, overlapping one another, “and add Fire like this, you get a Ward that will repel Shadowspawn.”

After a few moments, Jaren let the Ward dissolve again. “The more intelligent the creatures are that you’re trying to keep out, the more complex the Wards have to be,” he went on. “Wards to repel people require a lot of Power as well as Talent; intelligent creatures can fight the effects of the Ward if they know it’s there, and if their will to get past it is strong enough. Say for example a building was Warded against entry; that would keep a casual intruder out, thieves or random mischief-makers would just not consider that building as a target, for reasons they couldn’t necessarily pinpoint, they would just pick another house to rob. But if you knew you had to get into that specific building, say, if you knew somebody was held captive there and you had to rescue them, you could possibly overcome the instinct — the effect of the Ward — that tells you to go somewhere else.”

Then he smiled again and remade the first Ward. “But let’s start with this one. I’d like you to replicate the Ward against insects, and once you get that down, if you’re feeling confident you can modify it to work against rats and other critters, like I showed you.”

Kylin modded once and started work on the ward. He had released the power when he had completed his previous ward and so he reached out once again and embraced Saidin. He felt the rush of power flood though him and immediately began to fight for dominance. He was getting better dealing with that fight for control and suruva at that, not accustomed to it exactly, prepared for it was perhaps a better way of putting it.

He began weaving the ward. The net of Spirit was easy enough to make but adding the Earth and Air took time and focus. It was the delicacy required that gave him trouble. Until this point the weaves he had been asked to do have been simple ones that could be made quickly, this weave on the other hand was expontentially mire complexe than any of them.

As he worked a question occured to him. He managed to hold it in until he finished the weave not wanting to distact himself while working.

“Asha’man, you said said that it was harder to keep more intelligence creatures out. Does that mean it would be possible to create a ward which defended based on intelligence, one which would only allow more intellenent individuals thought it?” He asked. He didn’t really know where the question had came from but it had popped into his mind and once a question was in there he needed to know the answer.

Jaren
Jaren considered the question; he could see the logic behind it, based on what he’d said previously, but there were some flaws in the premise, in the assumptions behind the question. “By more intelligent creatures I meant ones able to recognise that their perception is being altered by the Ward,” he said. “Humans, higher end Shadowspawn. Sentient creatures, I suppose.

“But if you’re talking about a Ward that would only allow more intelligent humans through…” He shook his head slowly. “Whether a person can defy the repellent effect of the Ward depends on so many things and their level of intellect is, frankly, the least of them. If you eliminate all other possible variables — which, I don’t think you ever could, but let’s assume so — if you have two people with equal knowledge of the situation and equal motivation and physical ability to get through the Ward, the one who’s more likely to get through the Ward is the one with more willpower, more… resilience, if you will. That’s not necessarily the 'smarter' one. And,” he added with an easy smile, “we’ve not even begun to address the fact that there are different kinds of intellect and no objective way to measure and compare any of them.”

Of course all that only applied to Wards that didn’t cause physical harm and whose effect was based on making people not want to approach the Warded area or object. The range of Wards that could be devised to keep people or things out was vast and couldn’t possibly be covered within one lesson, especially as there were other kinds of basic Wards to cover as well… And this was a lesson on basic Wards, as Jaren had to keep reminding himself; his idea of what was basic might be slightly skewed because he had learnt from — and now lived with — Jaryd, who came up with staggeringly complex Wards basically in his sleep.

More than a little amused by the thought, Jaren went on, “What you can do, however, is to attune a Ward to a specific person or people, to allow specific individuals through, or a person in possession of a specific item, but that’s not something we’re going to be covering today. Now, besides the repellent Wards, there are Wards that don’t affect the intruder in any way but alert the channeller of their presence.” As he spoke, he wove a dome of Spirit again, over which he twisted spiderweb-fine threads of Air in a symmetrical pattern. “If anyone came within this Ward, I’d hear a sound like a bell ringing, alerting me of the intruder. I’d like you to replicate this, Warding your side of the classroom.” Demonstrating Wards in small, box-sized versions was all well and good, but in reality, most of the time you’d be Warding spaces the size of a room or a campsite, so practising the scale was essential as well.
