Sweep Cute (Attn: Amaranie Tice)

Post by Daniel » August 10th, 2017, 12:31 am

Nyaine The mop moved from left to right spreading the soapy water in an uneven coat over the cold stone floor tiles leaving puddles standing in the corridor. It was an activity not unsimilar to sweeping the garden pathways which Nyaine had ample experience in doing, yet while she had found the outside chores acceptable, this was almost unbearable. The wet floor led to her slippers getting soaked with the water and her feet becoming chilled and stiff with the cold slowly inching its way up her legs the longer she did the sweeping. At that moment it had already reached her calfs and the knees didn't have much time left, she was sure. Yet there was nothing for it, she had to finish the area she was assigned to otherwise it would only lead to more chores and the removal of her free time even if finishing now meant cutting into her sleep time.

As usual when doing the chores she was deeply irritated and somewhat infuriated by the fact that she had to do them at all. Mopping the floors was something that servants did or that could be easily accomplished with the power. In fact she was sure at this point even she herself would be easily able to weave Water and Air just so to remove the dirt and polish the elegant floor. Using the power for the chores was of course forbidden even had she been allowed to actually embrace the source, alone as she was.

Invigorated by her internal tirade, the next swing of her mop was more powerful as the ones before – and suddenly found an unexpected resistance. Inertia made her loose her grip on the cleaning utensil which fell to the floor clanging. She looked up the white-clad leg to find herself opposite another novice that must have just come around the nearby corner. In stunned reaction, she made a step backwards and with her soaked slippers lost her footing on the slick wet floor. Before she realised what had happened, she found herself sitting on the tiles, her behind and the palms of her hands that must have attempted to absorb her fall hurting.

“Ow!” she let out, inspecting her hands which seemed to have gone mostly unscathed. She stood up slowly and without her usual grace of movement. She rubbed her posterior in the futile attempt to make the pain go away and then remembered that she wasn't alone. With what remained of her dignity she clasped her hands in front of her now also wet dress and inspected the other novice. Face to face would certainly not describe the situation she found herself in, with the woman towering probably a head above her.

“I do not think we have met before,” she observed, offering a sad smile, “I am not usually this clumsy. Fortunately.”

Amaranie Tice Amaranie studied the sparkling floors that marked out her assigned section of the hallway. She passed her mop quickly over the last few tiles, then reported herself to the supervising Accepted. "That do be a fine job, child," the Illianer woman told her. Instead of dismissing her, the Accepted looked up and down the hallway, each of its sections containing a novice and a floor in varying states of cleanliness. The woman raised a finger, pointing down the hall, and Amaranie's eyes followed to where she was pointing. "Go help the girl who be three sections down," she instructed, and though Amaranie was not pleased, complaining did not even cross her mind.

The novice picked up bucket and mop, carting them slowly and carefully down the hall. She stuck close to the wall, doing her best not to disturb the others. Most were nearly finished, but as Amaranie turned the corner to where she had been sent, she saw that this section of floor appeared to be covered with water, far more than should have been needed. She had no more time to wonder why, as something smacked into her leg, knocking her against the wall. Amaranie's feet slipped out from under her, and she fell, sliding rather ungracefully down the wall.

It was hardly the first time she'd had this sort of unfortunate encounter with a wall, so Amaranie was quite used to it. Nothing hurt, so she stood back up carefully, giving her wet skirts a shake. She found herself looking down at a head of light brown hair which belonged to the novice working in the section. The other girl did not appear to have had any more luck remaining upright than Amaranie. Her white dress was similarly wet, and the mop she had been using lay on the floor as if it had suddenly escaped from her grasp. She didn't recognize the much smaller novice, and from the girl's words, she felt the same way.

Amaranie looked again at the overly wet floors, guessing that they were the cause of the other girl's problems. Didn't she know how to mop a floor? Amaranie herself had been taught how as soon as her hands could hold one, and though she knew some of the girls here came from far wealthier circumstances than her own, it was difficult for her to truly understand it. The novice sighed, wishing she'd been just a bit slower so that she could have returned to her room. "I'm Amaranie," she introduced herself."The Accepted says I'm supposed to help you." From the looks of the floor, the other girl badly needed it and Amaranie wasn't sure how to tell her. She feared the novice would become angry with her, but if they tried to work with the floor this wet, they would be here all night.

Nyaine “I am Nyaine.” She frowned. The other girl was supposed to help her? She had the equipment identical to Nyaine's with her at least. A cleaning mop and a bucket of already dirt-darkened water. She looked up at the novice's – Amaranie's – face again and on the way noticed that she, too, had wet spots on her dress.

“I am sorry,” she said finally, referring in some degree to both her inattention as well as Amaranie having to help her.

With all of her slippers stockings and dress being wet now, she shivered from the cold. She looked back and forth along the corridor but thankfully they were in an area where only Amaranie and herself were immediately visible. She closed her eyes, quickly going through an exercise for concentration and embraced saidar. Apart from visual confirmation by the overseeing Accepted she was not really afraid of being found out for user the Power without supervision. There were people using it all over the tower all around the clock. Channelling Water just so, she drew the moisture from both novices clothes, gathering it in a floating sphere in front of her. Once done, she let it drop in her bucket and relinquished saidar.

Immediately, with her clothes dry, she felt a lot warmer and found herself able to concentrate on the task at hand again. She picked up her mop from the floor with a sigh, dunked it in her bucket of soap water and started spreading it over the floor. “Shall we get this done, then?”

Amaranie
Water dripped from Amaranie's skirts, doing nothing to improve the state of the floors. She shrugged off the other girl's apology. "It was an accident," she said, and tried to wring the water out of her skirts over her bucket. The cloth was thick, and it held most of the water in, causing Amaranie to sigh in frustration. She had only just taken up her mop, determined to finish quickly and get out of the dress, when she caught sight of the bright blue threads hovering around Nyaine. Amaranie's eyes grew wide. They weren't allowed to channel outside class! It wasn't safe! As she watched, terrified, the blue threads seemed to grow longer, as if many sets of hands were trying to grab hold of her. The novice retreated towards the wall, pressing her back against it, but she couldn't get further away. "Please, don't!" she cried out, but if Nyaine heard her, the other novice didn't seem to care. Amaranie would have taken off running down the hallway had the blue threads not struck her first.

She could feel her heart pounding, but as quickly as the weaves had reached her they let go, pulled back by Nyaine. Amaranie was suddenly aware that the skirt of her dress was now as dry as it had been that morning. She frowned at it, lifting up an edge to get a closer look. Did she just do that? She had always been told that the One Power was dangerous, but this seemed harmless enough. Still, the Amadician girl shivered, not reassured at all by the sight of a large ball of water floating in the air. It shouldn't have been possible, but it seemed that nothing was impossible here. She couldn't make herself look away, and continued shaking even after Nyaine dropped the ball into her bucket and let the blue threads go.

Her hands had tightened around the mop handle while she watched, and Amaranie had to make herself open them and readjust her grip so that it wasn't quite so forceful. Taking a deep breath, she finally thought she was ready to begin working, nodding at Nyaine when the other girl suggested they get started. Her heartbeat had slowed down, but Amaranie still wasn't sure she was capable of speaking in actual words quite yet. She began by mopping all the excess water from the floor and depositing it in her own bucket. A quick glance at Nyaine revealed the girl adding yet more water, which was not going to help, but Amaranie couldn't bring herself to say anything to her. She already had proof that Nyaine wouldn't hesitate to use the Power on her and she didn't really want to know what the girl would be capable of if she were offended. Amaranie kept to the wall, working as best she could, hoping that just maybe, the other girl would realize what she was doing wrong without needing help.

Nyaine Nyaine frowned after not getting a verbal reply to her suggestion. Amaranie had commented her earlier apology and told her about being instructed to help her out. Did that mean she had insulted the other girl somehow? With so many different nationalities and cultures at the Tower that was always a possibility. She looked up and toward where the noise from the novice’s activity was coming from. Standing close to the wall and working on a section that Nyaine had already generously treated with the cleaning solution, her new acquaintance did not seem angry but shy if anything.

Well, if she was upset, it must have been because of the channelling, she finally concluded. Did she fear that she would be on the receiving end of some punishment if Nyaine got caught or that she might be the one accused? In fact, Nyaine wasn’t sure herself that she wouldn’t be. Something to remember for the future. She resolved that she should at least apologise for that. Again.

“I have already been over that section”, she began with the easier part while considering how to broach that other subject. Best to start with the apology and work through it. “Amaranie, I’m sorry about the channelling, I was freezing from all the water that had soaked my clothes and it looked like you could use some drying off as well. You need not worry about being implicated since nobody saw us and with all the power usage going on in the Tower all the time, nobody notices one more person doing it.”

It came out even more clipped than was usual for her Cairhienin accent, a testament to her being uncomfortable or at least not used to being in the situation where she had to apologise or justify herself. Of course, those situations actually had grown since she was a novice in the tower and effectively not a noble house’s scion any longer.

Amaranie
Amaranie didn't look up from the floors again until Nyaine directly addressed her. She didn't know what to say. How could she explain that she was trying to fix the other girl's mistake without offending her? It didn't seem possible, so Amaranie remained silent. She expected Nyaine to turn away and ignore her when she couldn't find a response, but instead the other girl kept talking. It was difficult for her to make sense of what she heard. It wasn't that she couldn't understand the words themselves, of course, but the idea that the other girl's channeling had not been intended to harm her was something the Amadician novice couldn't quite grasp.

Puzzled, Amaranie stopped working and took the skirt in her hands again. It did feel better dry, she could admit that much. When she dropped it again she found herself staring at the other girl without intending to do so. Aren't these people supposed to be....dangerous? Nyaine's innocent explanation of her earlier actions did not match what Amaranie had been taught at all. Standing there with a mop in her hands, the novice certainly didn't look threatening. Whatever she is, so am I. It was not a comfortable truth, but then, nothing about this place was.

What to say next? Now that she understood the reason for Nyaine's channeling, Amaranie had to admit to herself that she appreciated the other girl's effort. Saying that to Nyaine, however, was far more difficult. She found that she could hardly get the words out. "I......," she began, stopped, and tried again. "I.....um.......thank you. For this." The last word was said with a vague gesture to the dry skirt. She had never once thought she'd find herself saying that to a channeler, of all things. Amaranie was sure she was turning red. What was this place turning her into? Amaranie didn't want to think about it, and tore her gaze from Nyaine to the floors. Chores were safer. Much safer.

Looking at the floor again, she found that they did look significantly better than when she'd begun work, far drier than the side where Nyaine worked. The other novice did not appear to have noticed what Amaranie was doing, which meant she would somehow have to mention it directly unless she wished to be here the entire night. She stared at the end of her mop before finding wording that would explain the problem without the risk of offending Nyaine. "There's too much water on the floors," she said quietly. "If I don't clean some of it up, they'll never dry." She thought that explained her difficulty well enough, without accusing Nyaine of having caused the problem, but with any of the people here, Amaranie found it difficult to be sure. She did her best to focus on her work, holding the mop tightly to prevent it from rattling in her shaky hands.

Nyaine “Too much water?” Nyaine was dumbfounded. How did that make any logical sense? One used water to clean things. Body, clothes, floors. Surely more water must mean more clean floors? Was Amaranie trying to prank her? But no, she had been quiet and earnest. Either Amaranie was exceedingly good at lying or Nyaine had used too much water for the floors to dry. Given her own lack of experience with cleaning floors, the latter was likely true. “I had no idea. Come to think of it, though, I don’t really remember overly wet floors from home, but I had always assumed that was because the servants did it when we weren’t around…”

You could learn something new from the unlikeliest of persons. Her needlework teacher had always said something to that effect. She pushed the thought of remembering the exact saying aside. She found it strangely amusing that nobody had told her how to do the work properly when setting her to it and wondered how the Aes Sedai – she hoped it was one or more Aes Sedai – had reacted when they found her completely wet floors the last two times she had been set to this chore. She grinned. What do about it now, though? She played with the thought of applying her moisture drawing weave again. But no, that was like using the power for the entirety in the first place. Even though she still disliked the thought of all the manual labour, she had no desire to be caught for even more of that and this time there was no emergency in the slightest. Besides, Amaranie had not reacted particularly well to her channelling the last time around. She had no wish to offend the other novice.

Why had she reacted that way? Thinking about it again, Nyaine’s first assumption had been off. She had not been afraid to be caught and punished for unsupervised channelling she had not done. There had been no reaction to Nyaine mentioning that. Was Amaranie afraid of the power itself? But that made no sense either. She was wearing novice white, after all, the mark of a girl wanting to learn. It was mystery. Nyaine was intrigued. But directly asking her to the face was rude at best.

“Very well, no more water, then,” she said instead, pushing the bucket away with her foot. “Is there something else I could do to help speed this up?”

Amaranie
Amaranie waited anxiously for the other novice to become angry with her, but instead of being offended, Nyaine only seemed more confused. From Nyaine's mention of servants, it seemed obvious that work like this had not been part of her life before the Tower. She clearly had no idea what she was doing, and apparently none of the Accepted had taken the time to give her the instruction she needed. Amaranie supposed they just couldn't be bothered, which did not improve her already low opinion of most of the people in the place. She sighed as she continued to swirl her mop around her side of the floor. "I'm afraid there's not much you can do to make it go faster," she answered. "It's a rather slow process. Just try to keep your feet out of the spots you've already cleaned, and with two of us, we shouldn't have to be here much longer."

Amaranie yawned and hoped what she'd just told the other girl would be true. Her part of the work would not take her long; the squares they had been assigned were smaller than the kitchen floor she'd once had to clean at the end of every day. Half of one would take little effort from her, but Nyaine would be slower. She couldn't blame the other girl, it was not her fault if nobody had ever shown her how to mop a floor. She looked away from the floor, watching the other girl. She'd already stopped using so much water, and Amaranie let herself hope that Nyaine would be a quick learner.

Nyaine “How unfortunate. Anything to speed this up would have been quite welcome,” Nyaine commented, having hoped for just that something that might allow her to quicken and shorten this particular chore in future. Less time spent on chores would mean more time for useful and fun activities. She had accepted that she had to do the work even if she did not agree with it. At this point she did not expect she would ever agree with it.

“So,” she continued while continuing to distribute the water from the wetter areas of the floor to those that she had not mopped over yet. “I suppose the obvious question would be, since we haven’t consciously met before, when did you arrive here? Far more interesting though in my mind is how you’ve found your stay in the Tower so far. Apart from obvious inconveniences such having to clean the floors anyways.”

This seemed to be an innocent enough question to Nyaine and maybe a start for a conversation more interesting than the intricacies of cleaning and cleaning utensils. Not only was she still genuinely interested and curious about her assigned floor sweeping partner, talking would likely also make the time go by faster, which was definitely a win in her opinion.

Amaranie
Amaranie did not think Nyaine would be interested in what she actually thought of the Tower. I hate it here. Though perhaps that wasn't as true as it had been when she'd first arrived. She didn't mind her share of the chores, or most of the classes she had to take. If she hadn't been required to learn to channel, the Grey Tower might even have been...likeable. Amaranie shook her head. Surely it was blasphemy to think such a thing. She worked on her floor, which by now was beginning to dry, and tried to come up with an appropriate answer for Nyaine.

It wasn't easy. She wasn't supposed to fear her channeling classes the way she did, and she didn't want to admit that to the other girl, who probably wouldn't understand. Amaranie shrugged as she struggled to come up with a response. "I haven't been here very long," she finally said. "It's..interesting, being here. I don't mind doing chores at all, but it seems that nobody else here can stand them." She didn't think she'd ever understand all the fuss the other girls made over chores. Unable to come up with anything to say, Amaranie resorted to asking the same question of Nyaine. "And you? Do you like it here?" So far as she could tell, Nyaine was one of those who didn't like doing chores, but that was about all she knew of the other girl.
