Avyra took a small step back as he spun, realizing that she had startled him and instantly felt shame creep up into her face. She hadn't meant to. However, he relaxed almost instantly, reaching down to fix a bit of her hair that always seemed to get loose. Kyella clicked her sharp beak. “I’m glad you’re here," His voice was gentle as usual. “Once you get your stuff put away, and Kyella situated, we could go explore this place. If luck favors us, we might find somewhere off the beaten path." His eyes lit up with a playful glow. She couldn't help but smile at him, walking to his left, resisting the urge to lean up against him. Kyella probably wouldn't like that. The bird was easy to situate; she took to her perch easily and didn't seem too concerned about the room with her hood on. "You're in an odd mood today," Avyra said, looking up at him. "Is something wrong?" She too was nervous, but Terric seemed very uncommonly so.

Terric
“Have you ever been up here? To the Borderlands? Into the Blight?” Terric asked, stepping back out into the hall. With Avyra by his side, he set off in a random direction. “I’ve been to the Blight before. I was about the same age you are now. We managed to make our way rather far into the Blight.”
He shot a quick glance down at Avyra. “Sometimes bands of algai’d’siswai will go up to the Blight to kill a few trollocs for ji. Our mission was a little different.” These were memories he’d rarely discussed. Most of the people he would have talked to, had been there anyway. They’d all seen the same horrors. Telling Avyra felt like opening the wound again.
He began talking in a rush, “Kids were disappearing, all over the Threefold Lands. We’d lost a lot from the Nakai. The Red Shields, we followed clues to the Blight. There was this fortress guarded by trollocs and full of shadowrunners. They were holding the children there. They were trying to raise an army of Channelers for Sightblinder.” His voice sounded harsh in his ears. He kept walking, fists clinched. The trollocs and myrdraal were the least of the horrors he’d seen. He’d left out the haunted hollow eyes of the surviving children, their cheeks gaunt from starvation, bodies covered in signs of abuse. He didn’t tell her what the Masters of that fortress did to the children who couldn’t learn or who they couldn’t control. Sorena had always been a firebrand. In hindsight, it made sense that she would run afoul of the Masters. He’d come all that way to rescue her only to find her head floating in a cook pot. He’d never felt like such a failure. Raya’s sad eyed understanding hadn’t made things better. He’d failed her and failed to rescue her first-sister. Avyra didn’t need to hear about all of this did she?
Their walk was taking them down a dim, narrow spiral staircase. He stopped at the bottom, in a hallway that seemed to be filled with storerooms, and turned to face her. Still standing on the stairs, she was at eyelevel for a change. Well nearly. Terric stood, studying every curve and line of her face, letting her concerned green eyes fill his thoughts.

Avyra walked beside him, doing nothing but listening. She couldn't think of anything else but her big friend, so distraught as he recalled his story. He was leaving things out. She knew he was. But she wasn't going to force him into talking if he didn't want to. Maybe that was why he was so stressed about her. Something must have happened, maybe with another lover, that was making him anxious about the situation. She hardly noticed where they were going, and before she knew it, she was standing on a flight of stairs leading downwards into whatever hall, Terric able to meet her eyes finally from her taller step. She couldn't help but notice that she was three or four steps up and still shorter than he. "That won't happen here, I promise," her concerned, but startlingly steady, voice said. "I'll protect you. Nothing will happen to you while I'm here." She stepped down a step, taking his hand in both of hers. "I'm here. Don't worry." Avyra meant every word. She had the Power. She could protect him just as easily as he could protect her.

Terric
She didn’t get it. Truth be told, he didn’t really either. This wasn’t something he needed to be protected from, nor was it something to run from. He had to face his past and his failures. If he didn’t they would continue to haunt him. He would continue to have these dreams, and would be a glaring weakness preventing him from being an effective Gaidin.
That said, she couldn’t know how much it meant that she wanted to face this with him. He held her gaze for a moment, large hands wrapped around her small ones. Since he was still a few stairs below her, he didn’t have to bend as far when he leaned in to kiss her. Resting his forehead against hers he said in a soft voice, “I don’t need a protector. I just need a friend. We will watch each other’s backs out here.” He squeezed her hands gently, “When it comes time to dance the spears, we will do so together and we will both come back safely.” Terric was quite for a moment, forehead still pressed against hers, thoughts sliding away from the present. “There are just, some things I must face again. That’s why I came on this trip.”

Avyra let him take her hands, his own completely engulfing hers. He then gently leaned down to kiss her before resting his forehead on hers. She stood up on her toes, leaning into him to return the gesture, however odd it was. “I don’t need a protector. I just need a friend. We will watch each other’s backs out here. When it comes time to dance the spears, we will do so together and we will both come back safely.” He paused. “There are just, some things I must face again. That’s why I came on this trip.” She moved down another step, moving his chin to rest on top of her forehead as she leaned into him. "I'm nervous too. Not for your reasons, but for my own. This place does not sit well with me. It doesn't sit well with Dun or Kyella. I always listen to my animals. They have never been wrong." She paused. "I came here with Zeen once. We blew things up. But that was different. Here... I feel like this is much bigger. We'll be easily targeted." She didn't want to leave Terric's side. She wanted to curl up next to him and never let go. He would probably chase away her nightmares.

Terric
They stood together in the stairs, Terric holding Avrya against his chest. He was glad she was there for him, but she had worries of her own. I’ll have to be strong for her, he thought, running his fingers through her hair.
“What do you mean?” he asked in a muffled voice, cheek pressed against the top of her head. “How are thinks different this time?” He did not like where this was going. Before, the only things he had to worry about were his own anxieties. Maybe she was just worried. She had reason to be. But she did say she’d been here before, and that things were different. He’d been trained to look for changes and inconsistencies. If things were different now, what had changed? Was there a real and immediate threat? Beyond the ever present threat of trolloc raids that was life in the Borderlands.

"We're a larger group," Avyra replied. "We're easier to spot and target." She rested her chin on his collarbone. He had pulled her close, gentle arms wrapping around her. It was a good distraction from everything. He ran one hand through her hair, smoothing it out a touch. Why did he always have to be so kind and gentle? She let herself relax there, rocking up on her toes once. "You make me feel really small," she said softly, breaking the silence as she tried to put her arms around him. "You know that? Very small. But also very safe. I need that here."

Terric
Standing in the stairs with Avrya, he was able to forget his dreams and his worries about the future. For the moment at least. He buried his face in her hair inhaling the smell of her soap. He wanted this moment to last forever, but it would have to end, whether by a wondering Aes Sedai or raiding trollocs. He untangled himself and cupped her cheeks in his large hands. He leaned in for another breath stealing kiss.
He finally managed to pull his lips free and looked down at her with a half-smile. “I’d love to do this all day, but we should probably move on, Shade of My Heart.” He froze, he hadn’t meant to call her that, but it fit. He held her green gaze searching for some sort of response. He was happy to just move on, but words had been said, and there was no way of taking them back.

Re: New Surroundings [part of field trip] [attn; locke]
She buried her head in his shoulder the best she could, small arms wrapped around his neck. He smelled so nice. She couldn't place the scent, but it was a calming one. A safe one. However, her moment was over when he pulled away, breaking her grip easily. Gentle hands cradled her head, and he leaned in to give her a soft kiss, one she returned as she stood back on her toes. “I’d love to do this all day, but we should probably move on, Shade of My Heart.” He had such a gentle voice, and she couldn't help but smile back. "Aren't you a big ol' sap?" She smiled, pulling away as she grabbed one of his hands in hers. "That's not bad though." Avyra hesitated, then shuffled a bit. "I love you. How do you do it? You're so funny and kind." She paused. "What are we both going to tell our families. 'Oh yeah, I like this person who's kinda supposed to be my enemy'?" She paused, and then sighed softly. "This doesn't seem like it'll work. Besides, you're up there, I'm down here. And you have to be super gentle with me; I'm so small and fragile. That can't be fun for you, to always have to pick me up to see my face or give me a proper hug and then have to treat me like glass."
