Terric
Terric stepped into the lane next to the short, golden haired woman with the enormous bow. He had carried the bow to the range completely ready to fire, but he performed a half-draw for the sake of demonstration. He noticed Riahana Ferria had not mentioned a simple principle that he had had drilled into his head since the first time he held a bow. Always know what’s behind your target. No archer planned to miss but misses do happen, sometimes the other guy will bend down to pick up a shiny rock. If you are un aware of what was behind him, you might find yourself hitting his gai’shain and that would be a shame. It would be an impressive amount of toh. This target, a wooden board with painted on concentric rings was in front of an eight foot dirt berm. Good, arrows that missed were less likely to cause damage, and would be easily recovered from the berm. From what he knew of the Tower’s layout, this range also pointed away from almost anywhere where people would be. Good range planning. He brought his attention to the target itself. While he did not feel much wind on his own face, he could see the grass blowing in a strong gust down range. Maybe all the grass and trees in the Wetlands served a purpose after all.

He addressed the target, left foot to the front, standing at a ninety degree angle towards his target, his knees were relaxed and his weight was distributed evenly. His bow arm was fully extended but angled down. He chose an arrow from the quiver at his hip and knocked it without drawing it. As he did this he steadied his breathing. Slow. In and out. He raised the bow, smoothly pulling the arrow to his cheek with two fingers. Compensating for the wind, he let the arrow fly, make the process a single fluid action. At this range, the arrow’s drop would be too negligible to adjust for, just wind and his own elevation in regards to the target.

The arrow struck further to the left than he had intended. Masking a flicker of annoyance, he drew and knocked another arrow and scanned for more threats. He knew it was just a range, but Vishik had always said, Train the way you fight. Vishik had also taught him self-assessment and now he did just that. “When I prepare to shoot, I pay attention to two major things. Before anything I make sure that I have a clear path to my target and that if my arrow misses it’s not in danger of hitting something, or more likely somebody, that does not need to be hit. Secondly, I pay attention to the environment. Wind is the main thing to worry about. Sometimes, if I’m lucky there will be hints about the wind. Blowing grass or sand or the like. This time, I over compensated for the wind near the target. The arrow would have been lethal if it hit a man in the chest, but sometimes you need more precise archery.” It had been several years sense he had done more than rapidly fire arrows at a line of enemies a skirmish line. Yes there had been times in his life where he had to bet his or somebody else’s life on a single shot but those times were few and far between, thankfully because they seemed to always be part of his more tragic memories. In general, he stuck to his bow for hunting, and his spears for fighting men.

Fiona
Fiona checked her stance as the Gaidar spoke. Her feet were still parallel to the shooting line, shoulder-width apart and solid. The arrow shaft rested neatly in the middle of the center serving; Fiona gave it a slight tug and it snapped into place, as she had known it would. Her left hand shifted, the bow grip settling against the web between thumb and forefinger. Her thumb lay along one side of the wood, her three smallest fingers folded lightly around the other. Her forefinger hooked around the front. The whole thing felt light, loose, as it should be. She smiled, remembering her father's lectures. The fingers of her right hand wrapped around the string around the arrow, the wrapped fibers fitting into the crease behind her first knuckles. She disliked wearing a glove, and thus callus had built there over the years. The rough spots were unseemly for a lady, but for someone who hoped to be Gaidin, exceedingly useful.

The tiny noblewoman tightened the muscles in the backs of her thighs, dropped her chin and shoulders, and lifted the bow, pulling the string back in one smooth movement. She pushed her elbow up in line with the arrow and stared down the shaft at the target painted on the bale some thirty paces away. It was an easy shot, but the wind required adjustment, and the presence of Gaidar, Accepted, and Aielman made her nervous. Fiona dropped her chest and relaxed her fingers, her drawing hand pulling back to her ear as the string snapped forward.

The arrow hit half a hand off-center, but at least it hit the target. Given the wind, muscular exhaustion from prior exams, and the distraction of her companions, it was not a terrible shot. Fiona quirked her lips as she lowered her bow, her drawing hand already reaching for another arrow. She had nocked it and lifted her bow again before remembering Riahana's request. She lowered it, and spoke.

"Like Terric, I check for obstacles," she said quietly. "If there are none, then I check my stance; if I feel like I need to adjust my position, then something is off and I will not be able to fire accurately. I watch how it feels when I nock my arrow; if the fit is too loose or too tight it will fly foul. Third, if I hold my bow too tightly it prevents true aim. If I draw incorrectly – my shoulders too high, my lower back arched, my fingers misaligned – again, the arrow will fly askew of my intended target. If all of those things are good, then the last thing I should pay attention to is wind and humidity. Both can have an unfortunate effect on the flight path of an arrow." She gestured to the target. "As you can see."

False alarm- there's still a song for me; I'm just about around to sing it
There's still a chance for me...and I'm still here singing.
