A Song for Sore Feet (Open to all Ji and Drin)

Hama Valon, the city around the Grey Tower.
Forum rules
Welcome to Hama Valon! The aptly named 'mountain guard' is the city that has grown up at the gates of the Grey Tower at the western edge of the Two Rivers. Like all cities, there are quiet quarters with pleasant inns, such as Elman's Creek, which used to be the nearest village when the Tower was young, but was absorbed as the new city grew; its Band of Brothers Inn is still a favorite relaxation spot for many of the Tower's denizens. And again, like all cities the world over, there are less pleasant places--narrow, nameless streets that house hells and other houses of ill repute. Most of the city falls somewhere in between, with hawkers crying their wares in the streets, respectable shopkeepers ready to serve you, and petty cutpurses happy to follow you.

Novices, Soldiers, and drin'far'ji must be accompanied by a chaperon when outside Tower walls or they risk being picked up as runaways and duly punished.

A Song for Sore Feet (Open to all Ji and Drin)

OOC: For the sake of continuity, I'm assuming this is taking place at the same time, if not a day before Dish and Dishes. Nobody knows about any murdered novices yet.
Felessan Solonne Image
Felessan stood in the Tower courtyard just before dawn. Torches still burned and the chill of the previous night had not faded. He wondered how many students would show up this morning. Thirty forest green packs stuffed with about forty pounds of gear each sat on the dew slicked cobbles. He did not think he would need more than twenty. About 28 pounds of the contents of each ruck was dedicated to food and water. The rest contained survival gear such as tarps, cook pot, whet stones, and a hatchet. They would only be camping for a night but the weight was all part of the training exercise. He had organized this ruck march two weeks ago and placed a signup sheet outside the Warder’s Mess. If nobody signed up, he was considering take his ruck, march out into the city and begin visiting taverns then bivouac for the night in one of the city’s parks until the hangover faded. Thankfully his idle fancy would remain just that Drin’far’ji and Ji’alantin, were trudging into the courtyard wiping sleep from their eyes. In Felessan’s opinion they had a pretty choice deal. All the students who had signed up had two days off class. They would however use those days on an all ruck march through the city to a spot in the mountains where they would camp. They would march back on the following morning. Wondering around in the woods with a heavy pack and a jaunty marching toon sounded almost as fun as drinking in a tavern with a raucous drinking toon. It wasn’t his fault these youths hadn’t learned how to wake up on the drop of a crown. He watched the faces of the students. Several Ji seemed to be waking up now. A few Drin seemed to be quite alert as well, they had probably been soldiers before coming to the Tower.

He turned to address the waiting students, “Grab a ruck and fall in you goat kissers. Don’t bloody shove, there are enough bags for everybody.” Once the students were formed into lines with their rucks, he had them place them at their feet and lead them through some calisthenics and stretches. Once they finished their stretches, he called to them, “Rucks on your back! Onwards through the gates, move out!” He donned his own ruck, the familiar weight settling in place and set off at a jog till he reached the front of the column and slowed to a brisk walk. They would change pace throughout the day so they, but most likely they wouldn’t move faster than a quick trot, they weren’t Aielmen. He thought he had seen that Aiel Drin, though.

The coumn of students passed through the gates into the city of Hama Valon. The city was just beginning to stir in the predawn light. Shop keepers were sweeping out their stores, porters were making deliveries, and the occasional carriage passed. The crisp mountain air had blown away the city’s stink from the previous day and it was early yet. As he marched, Felessan turned back to look at his column of students. Twenty-seven had decided to join the march. Each was carrying what they considered a full combat load out. He had gotten permission from the Master of Training to allow them to carry live weapons on this expedition. He figured, if they were leaving the Tower grounds, they should be armed. Especially in the wake of some of the odder rumors circulating at the tower. The old soldier grunted to himself, he hated cities in the morning. Cities should be full of noise and bustle not the occasional creek and clatter of wagon in the gloom. He called out to the students, “Marching in silence sucks, who has a good Jody? A marching cadence. The cruder the better.” He let out a laugh and waited for a student to respond to his challenge. If not, he had a few good ones that would make these spoiled lordlings blush.
Terric
Terric was sure the armorers were tired of him. Three live spears. That’s how many spears he had asked them to cut the shafts on. Last time it has been a single practice spear and they grudgingly agreed. This time, he came armed with a note from Felessan Solonne. They had done the job but they weren’t happy. Now, a morning after the fact, Terric stood in shallow ranks with twenty of his fellow students, ruck sack on his back, buckler on his arm, spears shoved through the straps on his bag and bow in hand. He wasn’t particularly spectacular with a bow, but he was of the opinion that if they were attacked on the march, a bow would serve him better. A broad head arrow to the chest was a good deterrent for any Wetlander trying to get close enough to stick him with a sword.

Gaval Hanania stood next to him in formation. He was surprised the former Saldaen cavalry man had decided to come on this march. But there he was, standing straight, sheathed scimitar hanging from his belt, and mustaches oiled. Terric couldn’t help imagining that this was how his friend had looked before coming to the Tower, mounted and ready to ride off and patrol the Blight. Terric knew he felt more like his old self now than he had in a while. This excursion would be quite welcome. The inside of the tower was beginning to feel like a lion’s den.

His introspection was put on hold as Felessan Solonne ordered the column to move. They off through the gates at a brisk walk. This was a pace an Aielman could keep up indefinitely, even fully geared. He considered catching a few minutes of sleep on the march but nobody else around him was trained for that. Back in the three fold land, if an algai’d’siswai needed to rest on the march, he would ask his spear brother to let him hold onto his pack. He would let himself fall into a shallow sort of trance and the other man would guide him around obstacles while his brother’s feet moved absently. It didn’t replace sleep by a long shot but it did help stave off fatigue.

The column hadn’t traveled more than two city blocks when Felessan Solonne turned to them and shouted, “Marching in silence sucks, who has a good Jody? A marching cadence. The cruder the better.”

So the Gaidin wanted marching songs? Terric knew a few good battle songs. Those were the only songs Aielmen song. He decided he’d listen to the Wetlanders’ songs before offering one of his own.

Paks Liard, Drin'far'ji
Drin’far’ji Paks Liard. The very title caused the woman to laugh at herself as she made her way from her quarters to the courtyard at the Light forsaken hour before the crack of dawn. Sure, she’d put her best effort forward in the Unarmed class, but she was still Paks. . .still the shameless flirt of a woman who was a member of the learning ranks because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. When a chance came up to miss out on classes, she figured why not?

The idea of escaping the routine of the Yards appealed to the blue-eyed woman, even if it meant spending the better part of the day marching to some unknown location. It got her out of history and diplomacy for two days, which seemed like a win for her. Paks didn’t have a mind for politics, and while she knew how to play Daes Dae’mar, she rather spend her time pursuing the pleasures of other games.

When Paks arrived at the appointed meeting place, she saw a bunch of packs lined up in a row. Other Drin’ and a few Ji’ were already milling about when Felessan barked “Grab a ruck and fall in you goat kissers. Don’t bloody shove, there are enough bags for everybody.”

Paks picked up her pack, and started to second guess her decision for joining the march when she realized how heavy the bag was. She threw it on her back and lined up with the others. She noted several of those who were in line carried weapons with them. She was given the choice, but since she only had any real training with unarmed, she intended on going without weapons until she discussed it with her roommate, who suggested bringing a dagger would be better than nothing. Knives can always come in handy in the wilderness, thus she took the advice to heart and wore a dagger on her belt.

It wasn’t long after the group fell into lines that they marched out in silence. Two blocks into Hama Valon, Felessan asked for a bawdy marching tune. Paks smirked as she thought back to the group she called her second family before being unceremoniously sent to the Tower. They often sang songs of questionable lyrics at the inns they entertained, and one came to mind that might be just the thing.

The Drin’ cleared her throat and called out, “If ye know the Jolly Tinker, join in! If ye don’t know it, the chorus is [i[Well, indeed I have, don't you know I have? To me rightful loora laddie, well, indeed I have.”[/i]

After clearing her throat once more, she began in her best Inn Singing voice, projecting so all could here.
”As I went down a shady lane, as a door I chanced to knock
Have you any pots or kettles with rusty holes to block?

Well, indeed I have, don't you know I have?
To me rightful loora laddie, well, indeed I have

The missus came out to the door and she asked me to come in
Sayin': "You're welcome jolly tinker and I hope you brought your tin?"

Well, indeed I did, don't you know I did?
To me rightful loora laddie, well, indeed I did.

She took me through the kitchen and she led me through the hall
And the servants cried: "The divil, has he come to block us all?"

Well, indeed I have, don't you know I have?
To me rightful loora laddie, well, indeed I have

She took me up the stairs, me lads, to show me what to do
And she fell on the featherbed and I fell on it too

Well, indeed I did, don't you know I did?
To me rightful loora laddie, well, indeed I did
[/i]

Paks paused to let someone else pick up the tune, and to her surprise, one of the Ji behind her answered in a baritone voice.
She then picked up the frying-pan and she began to knock
For to let the servants know, me lads, that I was at me work

Well, indeed I was, don't you know I was?
To me rightful loora laddie, well, indeed I was

She put her hand into her pocket and she pulled out twenty pound
Say: "Take this me jolly tinker and we'll have another round

Well, indeed we will, don't you know we will?
To me rightful loora laddie, well, indeed we will

Well, I've been a jolly tinker for this forty years or more
Oh, but such a lovely job as that I never did before

Well, indeed I didn't, don't you know I didn't?
To me rightful loora laddie
Well, indeed I didn't
[/i]

Paks found herself laughing as the rest of the group picked up on the chorus and called it out in answer. Felessan was right. . .marching to a tune was much more enjoyable, and she was certain she could belt out one or two more before their two day excursion was done.

Danos
Danos walked to the gathering of Drin and nodded to a few other Ji that he saw in attendance. He had decided to take the chance to attend the march when he had seen the sign up sheet outside of the Warder Quarters. He knew his own wilderness skills were lacking in many ways, he had the memories of his Survival Test to prove it.

And so he followed with the rest of those who were beginning to arrive, chuckling when he saw the cracking jaws and hands trying in vain to hide yawns, as the students who had not yet grown accustomed to rising early longed for their beds. Danos had long been an early riser, even before the Grey Tower his trade had required him to rise early to be ready for when custom arrived, and so he shared an amused look with the other Ji as they prepared.

Once he arrived, he noted Terric had chosen to come, and he found himself wondering how much the man knew of wilderness travelling. He knew the Three Fold Land was inhospitable, and that Aiel moved often from classes he had attended, but he was curious to see the Aiel in a forest. He noted that many of the Drin had elected to go on the march unarmed, or simply carrying daggers and he was grateful that he had chosen to grab both sword and a pair of axes. They were the simple kind, easily usable for both tool and throwing, but as he strapped the rucksack onto his broad back he tapped the hafts gladly. With all the rumours flying around, one couldn’t be too careful.

“Let’s get a move on you goat kissers,” shouted the man in the lead, and Danos unconsciously allowed many of the Drin’far’ji to walk past him before stepping to the side and marching on the side of the column. He would help shepherd the learning rank, and he could hear from the whispers and nudges seen through the corner of his eye that many of the Drin recognized him from both the bear leather bracers, and his fight with Terric.

Chuckling, he warmed his body up with the stretches and settled into an easy stride, slower than the one had used during his Survival Test, but with his long legs easy to maintain. He knew many of the marching column would have never traversed much distance, while those who had could be seen settling their sacks weight and adopting a stride that was easy to maintain.

As they marched through the still city, Danos was glad for the chance to escape the walls of the Grey Tower, and experience the fresh mountain air once more. This time he carried water and food, and with the many hands it would be much simpler to set up fires and shelter once they arrived. This was a good idea this march, get the Drin and Ji out of the pressure cooker, let us bond together as men and women with a common goal, and give some of the Drin the chance to learn the wilderness, He knew many of them would come to regret having chosen this march as easier than two days of classes, however he also knew he would have relished the chance to learn and polish skills before his Test.

When the singing began, he was surprised to see a female Drin’far’ji be the first to take up the call, and he laughed when he recognized the song she was singing. She had a good voice, it carried over the marching feet and led into the second verse. When the second verse began, he took up the call, his baritone voice carrying over the marching ranks beside him, while his grin and relaxed smile invited them to join in the chorus.
Well, I've been a jolly tinker for this forty years or more
Oh, but such a lovely job as that I never did before

Well, indeed I didn't, don't you know I didn't?
To me rightful loora laddie
Well, indeed I didn't

Terric
Terric had never been known as a good singer, but that didn’t stop him from singing along at the top of his lungs, “Well, indeed I have, don't you know I have? To me rightful loora laddie, well, indeed I have!” He let out a booming laugh when the song ended. This Wetlander at least knew what a good marching tune was. He decided, he would try a song of his own. This was one of the songs he had learned when he first tried out to become Aethan Dor He had fond memories of running up mountains in the heat of the Three-fold Land with a heavy sandbag on his shoulder while singing this song. As he stepped out of line, Gaval Hanania gave him an odd look. Terric turned and shrugged at his friend before jogging to the front of the column.

He turned to jog backwards, occasionally looking over his shoulder to avoid obstacles. He raised his voice to address the column and as he spoke, he slung his bow and pulled one of his spears from the straps of his ruck. “Felessan Solonne wants us to sing marching songs. Well lets wake the neighbors!” He raised his spear and buckler over his head rattling them together. “Whenever I throw my spear up,” he demonstrated pumping spear arm into the air, the morning sun glinting on the tip, “I want you to shout ‘At least I have my spear!’ as loud as you can. I also want you to throw up your weapon as well.” He glanced over his shoulder again, dodging around a fruit seller setting up his stall. He began to sing, well enthusiastically shout:

I took a trip to Twin Rock Hold
At least I have my spear!
All the women were grey and old
At least I have my spear!
Is that a young beauty I do spy?
At least I have my spear!
But alas she’s Far Dareis Mai
At least I have my spear!
She invited me to play Maidens Kiss
At least I have my spear!
A bottle of oosquai and I’m at bliss
At least I have my spear!
She gave me a kiss, steel at my neck
At least I have my spear!
With a wink and a smile she left me a wreck
At least I have my spear!
Drunk and alone I returned to my tent
At least I have my spear!
I climbed into my bedroll, feeling spent…. As Loud as you can!
At least I have my spear!
The Wetlanders warmed to the song quickly. Some got the joke and laughed, nudging their fellows. Others looked on in confusion. Once the song finished, Terric rattled his spear and buckler again laughing. Before rejoining the column, he sprinted up to a stall with a woman selling sweetbuns, he passed her a few coins and rejoined the column, towards the front, chewing on the piping hot pastry.

Felessan Solonne gave him a flat look, “You know we’ll be eating soon.”

Terric whipped the crumbs from his mouth, “I am aware.”

The Gaidin sighed then called out, “Does anybody else have a Jody? Or am I going to have to sing one?”

Terric fell back into line chewing as another student stepped up to lead them in a song. As they marched, he let himself truly pay attention to the city around him. The Wetlands were a truly strange place. He had heard stories but nothing had prepared him for waking up in the mornings to find water on the ground. It hadn’t even rained. Dew was a strange phenomenon. He wondered if his sister believed even half of the things he wrote to her, if she was even getting his letters. He hadn’t seen a reply in months. He marched along listening to the new song, thankful that he was becoming accustomed to heavy Wetlander boots and that his feet were not slipping on the dew slicked cobble stones.

Paks Liard
Paks didn’t think she’d actually have fun on the march, but she was oh so wrong! Who knew singing bawdy songs to a marching cadence would make carrying a heavy pack as they marched out of Hama Valon almost enjoyable! The song offered up by the Aiel was just as entertaining as the Jolly Tinker, and Paks found herself laughing as the second marching song came to a close.

The group of nearly thirty carried on their march as the Gaidin, Felessan, barked, ““Does anybody else have a Jody? Or am I going to have to sing one?”

Paks cringed at the idea of the Gaidin singing. He did not have what she would call a pleasant voice. Looking around, it seemed no one was stepping up to offer another song. For her part, Paks had all sorts of songs, but not all of them were good as marching cadences. She then remembered a short, but funny tune that was sung by an audience member during one of her troupe’s performances when they asked for volunteers to step up and entertain.

“I’ve got another one, Felessan Gaidin!” Paks piped up, hoping to keep his singing voice reined in. “It’s meant as a marching cadence sung back to back until you get sick of it. You’ll catch on to the lyrics,” she informed everyone.
The prettiest girl I ever saw was sipping bourbon through a straw.
I picked her up I laid her down
her long blonde hair flowed all around.
And now I have a mother-in-law
and 14 kids who call me Paw.
The moral of this story is clear
instead of bourbon stick to beer!

“Join in as you can!” Paks shouted, and started again.

Paks laughed as she heard various voices pick up the cadence and join in. She wondered how many times they’d go through it before the cadence and unison broke down.
