Welcome to the Gardens: one of the most tranquil areas of the Tower Grounds. Birds sing in the trees which line the wide paths between beautiful flower beds and serene lakes. There are benches to sit and listen to the waterfall, and there is neatly trimmed grass to lie on and rest. Novices and Soldiers as well as Warders in Training can be seen, sweeping the stone paths as Accepted and Dedicated study from books and relax under leafy trees.

[Here's the thread! ^^]
Avyra
Aes Sedai did not have breakdowns. They didn't show emotion. Emotion was weak, unneeded. They walked like queens. Above queens, even.

But Avyra rushed out of the classroom, trying not to fall into emotional discord. Was she ever going to understand this? Her teacher had been a rather irritated Aes Sedai, trying to teach her how to weave Earth. It seemed so easy when she had done it, but when Avyra tried she couldn't do it. Was it possible to have a block with just one aspect of the Power?

But her teacher hadn't cared. She had just fussed and fussed for an hour about Avyra's incompetence.

The Novice was supposed to be going to dinner. But she didn't, she wasn't hungry enough to think of food. At least she would be alone.

She snuck out, making her way to the gardens. There was no one there, luckily, and she sighed, making her way to the lake. On her way she passed her tree, the one she climbed not once, but twice. The one that had gotten her in serious trouble. It might be laughing at her, but she pushed it away from her mind.

She settled down by the lake, sitting at the shore. In her white Novice dress, but she didn't care. She would fix it later. Or face punishment for its possible damage, just add that to the list.

And Avyra sat, curling her knees to her chest, resting her head on them with a sigh. It all hurt. She really didn't want to think about it. Maybe she should go back inside, find someone to talk to. Seonin, Danos, even Mirin Sedai or Ravak Gaidin. She hoped nobody would come for her here, or stumble across her on accident , but part of her wished she had someone to talk to.

An hour ticked by, and nobody came. Her only company was the birds, which she was fine with. She hadn't moved. She didn't have a need or want to.

Herarn had been walking along the halls when he had overheard two Novices talking about another who was having difficulties with Channeling: Intro to Earth. They had carried on about how she'd left the classroom, probably for the gardens before he had interrupted them.

“As I see two Novices with enough idle time to gossip, then I think the both of you need something to do. You, behind the forge in the Warder Yards there is a pile of sand. Find the red grain of sand and take it to the blacksmith. If he deems it is the one then your punishment will be over. If not, you will go back to looking until you find it. As for you, you will go to the woodworker's area, they have rough hewn planks in neat stacks. You will move them from where they are to a point indicated by one of the craftsmen there, until you have moved the entire stack. Then you will relocate the entire stack back, one board at a time. You will do this ten times. Now go, before I send you to Mirin Sedai for edification on what is considered proper behavior for a Novice.” said Herarn calmly but with enough authority that there was no mistaking the sword pin at his collar.

Both Novices swallowed regretfully before curtsying and headed off to their respective penances. Herarn was kind of known for his penances. They weren't cruel, just unusual and often served no other purpose than to make someone do something for no real gain. It was a common enough punishment in the Three Fold Land or a task given to children or gai'shain to keep them occupied.

With that he allowed his stride to take him to the Gardens, finding the Novice in question wasn't too hard. Approaching in his usual quiet way, he said, “Such a wonder isn't it? All that standing water. Where I come from it is such a precious resource that septs will get into a blood feud over a pool of water the size of a small child and little deeper than a finger's length.”

He sat down next to her without asking. He made sure that the sword pin at his collar was on the far side of her so it wasn't immediately visible. Novices and Soldiers tended to be more free with their speech if they didn't think they were talking to a higher ranking individual.

Avyra was watching the water, basically dead to the world. She usually wasn't like this. The sparky Novice was usually alert and attentive, watching everyone and everything around her. But she didn't know there was someone behind her until a huge, rumbling voice spoke up. "Such a wonder isn't it? All that standing water."

She almost jumped clear out of her skin, not expecting someone to be right behind her. And when she turned, she almost jumped further, not expecting a huge man like that. He was even taller than Danos, and completely dwarfed her. "Where I come from it is such a precious resource that septs will get into a blood feud over a pool of water the size of a small child and little deeper than a finger's length," he continued before she could speak, then walked over to sit next to her. It took a bit of effort for her to not move over a few feet, not even out of fear, just so she could look at him without her bloody neck hurting.

She stared at him for just a moment, processing what he had just said. Lack of water... coupled with height. Of course. He's an Aiel. She then mentally scolded herself for being so slow.

Not really noticing or caring about their rank difference, Avyra huffed, turning back to look at the lake. "Well," she said, aware of her clipped Cairhien accent. "I knew you Aiel were tall, but I didn't think your size would be that ridiculous. Now that's just unfair, honestly."

Ravak
Ravak walked the halls of the Grey Tower, munching away quietly on a green apple, looking as arrogant as a strutting rooster. Anyone in the Yards would recognise it for The Cat Crossing the Courtyard, the haughty way that Warders always seemed to move. He attracted no more attention than normal, which was to say he was drawing a bit of attention. Sadly not for his golden pin, nor for his reputation. That, the reputation, seemed to come solely from his duties as Master of Training, and had nothing to do with his bondmate Kaia. She had her own reputation, 'the infamous Keeper of the Chronicles'. He'd seen the effects of that on his own sister.

No, they were staring at him. The women were, at any rate, mostly. It was a fair enough day, just on the edge of warmth for his northern temperament. His shirt was unlaced, revealing a narrow V-shaped swathe of muscle and hair underneath. Was that needed? No. But did it help, knowing that whilst eyes were on his body, they were not looking elsewhere? Well, yes, that was the entire purpose of the exercise. To be a distraction from whatever else was going on. If they were too busy looking at him, they wouldn't notice his Aes Sedai so much. Or Elia. Or Sinead. And that was the point.

As he rounded a corner, two smaller forms in white crashed into him. The apple almost slipped from his grasp, but aside from that, he was unharmed. As soon as they had regained their composure, the Master of Training put his hardest glare on them. "Explain yourselves." He didn't add 'children', just on the off-chance any Aes Sedai or Asha'man overheard. He had complete and utter jurisdiction over the Warder Yards' trainees, but handling the punishments of novices came under Mirin Sedai's purview, and no-one else's. That said, he had berated some novices as of late, and a soldier or two. But it was just as likely Mirin or Soti had been required to put in a firm word or two about one of the Drin or Ji.

The replies he got, one voice stumbling over the other, painted an interesting picture. A Dedicated had taken it upon himself to hand out punishments. And from the description of the Dedicated - an incredibly tall fellow - and from the punishments - things he had heard from Sinead - he easily put the clues together. "Well, children-" this time it was safe, as they were alone "-I don't think your punishments fit the crime. Nor does this man sound like Mirin Sedai, hm? No. Now, return to your chores or classes or what have you. If anyone questions you, you can redirect them to me. Now, back to it." They didn't quite scamper off with mixed thanks, but as they were talking over one another again, who knew?

Rav's free hand flexed over the grip of his sword-breaker. An Aiel handing out punishments to gai'shain? Well, if those novices were gai'shain, the black very much makes you da'tsang, doesn't it? And that third novice. The description of her indicated only one particular novice. One with a penchant for climbing trees.
----- Both hands were resting on sword hilts when Rav strode into the area holding Avyra and the Aielman. A Dedicated, as the novices had said. Idly, Rav thumbed his badge of office, golden and bright, and planted himself in front of the bench the two initiates were sat at. He directed his glare for the girl first.

"Novice Avyra Moeryr." He brought all of his gravelly voice to bear. The last time he'd seen the novice, she was hiding under his desk, attempting to steal one of his husky pups. "You've made quite a name for yourself. I hadn't realised that you had already spent time in Mirin Sedai's office when the Keeper sent you there. Maybe the Mistress of Novices will commission a seat, just for you, with the frequency you are in and out of there." Rav wanted to build up his anger, so whilst he would have normally stopped there, he opted to continue. "I also hear you are having difficulties with your studies, mm? Accepted Elia told me about your forays into the ways of Healing. Maybe you would have more luck if you weren't out on dalliances with soldiers."

If Avyra had any reaction to that, it was lost as soon as Rav's eyes turned to the Dedicated. "As for you, I'm sure Soti Asha'man will love to hear how you are engaged with, what was it now, a 'distracting relationship' with a novice? The two of us, the Master of Soldiers and I, have devised quite a lovely array of punishments as penances for anyone thinking they are a mighty Asha'man in need of a Warder, or at least a companion." Rav stopped, partially to catch his breath - his voice was trembling with quiet, barely held-in anger. He stroked his beard, thoughtfully. "Ah yes, of course, you are an Asha'man. Or, at least, you think you are, Dedicated. Doling out penances for novices who were merely talking, by my understanding. And you think them gai'shain. Oh yes, please, look surprised. I know what gai'shain are, and I also know what da'tsang are. Be careful how you look at others, lest they look back at you as an honourless dog." Actual spittle was flying from the Shienaran's mouth - it was mostly for show - so when he centred himself back to calmness, it seemed like a sudden transformation. "Novice, be wise about the company you keep. As for you, Dedicated, you will attend me later, when we'll have a nice chat over tea about how your name is not Soti Asha'man, your title is not the Master of Soldiers, and... well, a suitable punishment for your overeager ambition, mm?"

Without waiting for a response - not that any response would be wise at this juncture - Ravak spun to leave. His fancloak fell between his two scabbards, leaving the two swords purposefully on show for the Dedicated to consider. I'm sure that stings, having a wetlander upbraid you about honour. Had he been too harsh? Mentally, he shrugged. He doubted it. Now he just had to square this away with Soti before the Aielman trotted his way over to his office.

Herarn stood and saluted Ravak. He knew what the fancloak was and what it represented. However, having his face ripped off without even so much as a how do you do, combined with accusations of him being in a relationship with a Novice surprised him. The Warder must have assumed it to be about the statement regarding gai'shain however it was not. It might have been in regards to the remark about da'tsang, as he had been grilled by enough Browns and Greys about his culture and ji'e'toh that he was fairly certain that they had composed several different manuscripts. After all he knew he wasn't the only Aiel in the Tower so he was fairly certain that they had been grilled as well.

However, Ravak would be mislead if he felt that Herarn felt upbraided about anything regarding his own honor. He had yet to meet a wetlander who knew the finite nuances of ji'e'toh.

“You assume much, Ravak Gaidin. But fail to gather all the facts before making a conclusion. Perhaps I was out of line for issuing punishments to gossiping Novices who were standing around idle. I am certain that they failed to inform you of that. But that is my toh and as you have made me aware of it, I will stand before Soti Asha'man and accept the consequences to fulfill that toh before the Second Bell has rung. But you assume incorrectly of any relationship between me and the Novice. Until less than two minutes ago, I had never laid eyes on her. That is the truth. And if you know anything about ji'e'toh you will know my word to be true and real as the fancloak you wear about your shoulders.”

“I had heard that she was having issues with a channeling class and thought that I could perhaps suggest a path that she could pursue with an Aes Sedai or an Accepted on how to manage her problem.” stated Herarn calmly. It took a great deal to intimidate him, let alone frighten him. After all he was still considered Rogue by the Black Tower which brought it's own problems. Thus he felt no need to comment on Ravak's obvious need to show that he was armed. But only a fool would ever consider a warder unarmed.

Ravak
If Rav had been putting on the anger before, it was real now. His face was carved granite, his voice like steel running across gravel. "I assume much?!" Rav crossed the space between himself and the Dedicated within a second. Avyra squeaked in her seat. "Dedicated, you best think long and hard about the next words that come out of your mouth, speaking to a Gaidin of the Grey Tower like that." Something tugged at his thoughts. Kaia. Concern rushed towards him from the Red sister. Concern for him. He snorted, loudly. "The facts are what I make of them, boy. You are not the Master of Soldiers. You are not my peer, and you are heartily mistaken if you think I said "Report to Soti Asha'man." I said my office. Do you need a map, or do you need someone to rake the sand out of your ears?"

Steel blue eyes bore through the Aielman's head. "You are not in the Three-fold Land, Dedicated. You have sworn yourself to the Grey Tower, to the Aes Sedai and Asha'man of Hama Valon, to the Amyrlin Seat, to the M'Hael, to the Mistress of Arms. You are bound to us. I understand that notions of home may get in the way, but if you think ji'e'toh - and I know plenty about honour and obligation - if you think ji'e'toh puts you in some special place apart from your fellow Dedicated and Accepted, you. Are. Mistaken."

The Master of Training's knuckles were bone-white, gripping hard onto his weapons. Kaia was... moving towards him. Her concern for the Shienaran was strong, and growing stronger. He let the Domani's emotions wash over him, like a cleansing rain. The anger, the fury inside him seemed to quell, like patterns in the snow melting away in the summer sun.

Rav's voice was ice cold. "You will see me three hours after Late, at my office." He let the words hang in the air, his eyes still piercing. Avyra looked shaken, and so she should be. And maybe you too will think before acting like a child in front of me. Satisfied that his message had been understood, Rav turned once more, but this time towards where Kaia was coming from. The last thing he wanted was her interfering with his disciplinary affairs again.

At the sound of Ravak's angry voice, Avyra turned, and her expression grew dark. But she knew better than to protest, she just gritted her teeth and endured it, but she was shaking with anger, trying to hold back tears. How dare he-?! She couldn't speak, then because the Aiel stood, saluting, then began to rebuke Ravak. She couldn't believe this.

She watched the exchange, remaining seated, regardless of how intimidated it made her feel. However, when Ravak suddenly exploded, she jumped again, nearly biting her own tongue. He was shouting at the Aiel Dedicated now, completely on fire, then he turned and made to whirl away. No. She wouldn't let him. She stood, ignoring her shaking legs and how foolishly tiny she was. Ravak couldn't push her about.

"You're a bully, Ravak," she snarled softly. "That's all you are, you and your sister both. You use your rank to push us around." Now she was dead. "You forget this is my free hour. What I do now is none of your business. And if I want to be with this kind Dedicated here, I can. Leave any punishments to Mirin Sedai, however I'm not sure what wrong I'm doing now." She paused. "You hate me. You and your sister both. I don't care. You don't get to me." She paused. "Good day, Gaidin." She was breathing really hard, her hands shaking. She had never, ever done such a thing before. Sure, she was a bit of a trickster, but she had never harmed anyone with her jokes. Ravak seemed to just be looking for a fight to pick, she she wasn't going to give him his childish pleasures.

So she stalked off before he could reply. Maybe he wouldn't see that she was crying.

Herarn's eyes hardened as Ravak stepped up to him. It was an automatic and deeply ingrained response that no amount of penances or training would change. He had been born and bred to fight.

When Ravak left, he found himself alone. Herarn had to exert himself mentally to keep from calling down lightning bolts to strike at.... anything. Anything but the trees.

After he calmed enough not to lash out with the One Power, he strode off at a ground eating lope. He took one of the quieter and less used paths towards the Master of Soldier's office, mostly because he didn't want to lash out at anyone in his anger.

He couldn't help but growl out quietly, “The truth is the truth, no matter rank or place in this world. And I did not claim you said to 'report to Soti Asha'man'. I asserted that I would report to Soti Asha'man to inform him of my transgression. And I of all people know that this is not the Three Fold Land. I am also quite aware of my oaths. But know this, if the Grey Tower believes that I will stand by and allow it to stain my own honor then it will learn as the Black Tower did. I will leave before that happens.”

“And I will be at your office, three hours after Late if my punishment allows it. Though I will make sure to inform Soti Asha'man of your instruction.”

Herarn was going to attack his penance to vent his frustration and anger, but he had to get it under control before he arrived before the Master of Soldiers.

Stopping, he punched a stone column hard enough for the callouses on his knuckles to split open, he barked out, “Light forsaken Sharan taking up with a trolloc!”

He stopped and paced back and forth on the pathway attempting to get his center.

Jaryd sat against a tree in a secluded area just off the path between the main Garden and the ouroboros-shaped hall. He had a sheet of paper in his hands, but he hadn’t looked at in some time; instead he stared sightlessly into the air, his thoughts consumed by issues far from the pleasant green foliage that surrounded him. His mind restlessly sorted through the different implications of the situation his Eyes and Ears had brought to him, until at last he threw up his hands and pulled himself back to the present with a sigh. With the information he had on hand, he could do nothing but wait.

He shifted, folding the paper and tucking it into the inner pocket he had sewn into his blood-red Altaran vest. As he did, he became aware of the tidal wave of concern growing in Kaia’s mind. What’s this? It did not seem to be directed at him, and she did not seem to be panicked. Perplexed, Jaryd pushed himself to his feet, but as he made his way toward the main path to find his lover, he was surprised to hear a male voice rising discordantly above the tranquility of natural sound.

Judging by the tone, whoever it was had lost his grip on his temper. Jaryd wrapped himself in the Void, and approached on cat-quiet feet, emerging onto the path two paces behind an extremely tall man with dirty blonde hair and the black uniform of a male channeler. Jaryd declined to alert the man to his presence; rather, he folded his arms over his chest and listened to Herarn’s rampage in bemused silence.

Marble columns lined the path in this area, fanciful ivy-covered swirls rising taller even than the Dedicated. When Herarn lashed out at the stone with a volley of curses, the Red finally moved. “Breaking your hand isn’t going to make things any better,” the Asha’man said quietly. The younger man spun, and Jaryd quirked an eyebrow up.

“I am quite certain trees cannot impugn your honor,” he commented dryly with a look around at the empty path, “nor order you to report to So’ti Asha’man. Walk with me, Dedicated, and tell me what happened.”

Herarn spun and saw Jaryd, his immediate response was to seize saidin. Then sense took over, he was no longer a member of the Black Tower and his face was a board somewhere probably near this man’s. Embracing the void, he took a deep calming breath before looking at his hand. Blood oozed from the broken skin slowly already congealing into the beginnings of a scab.

He walked with the Keeper for a few moments as he centered himself trying to find a good starting point. Deciding it best to start from the beginning he spoke in as calm a voice as he could manage at the moment. “I was heading to my room as I had received a letter from home and wanted to read it in private. I haven’t heard from my mother since I began to Ward my dreams. She used to check in on me using my dreams when I first started my journey to becoming Asha’man. As I’m walking along, I heard two Novices gossiping. As I came upon them in the hall they were just standing there chatting away. I reprimanded them and gave them something to do. A sort of penance for standing around just gossiping about another Novice.”

“The Novice in question, Avyra I believe her name was, supposedly had issues with channeling the element of Earth. As I can relate, with Earth being my weakest element I felt that I would seek her out and see if I could offer advice that she could possibly take to an Aes Sedai or an Accepted to help train on her weakness. But before I could even introduce myself, Ravak Gaidin appears and begins to vehemently chew me out for reprimanding the two Novices and treated me as if I thought I was Soti Asha’man.”

“Apparently, Dedicated and Accepted are not permitted to issue punishments to idle gossiping Novices or Soldiers. Had that been his only issue, I would have merely accepted the rebuke and gone to Soti Asha’man for a punishment. I have done wrong, therefore I have incurred toh. To clear it, I would have to admit my wrong doing and accept my punishment.”

Herarn then clenched his hands so tight the knuckles popped. He grit his teeth once again attempting to center himself, finding it hard to do but he managed it. “Then he said that we would ‘have a nice chat over tea’ over the subject of what my name is and that it is not Soti Asha’man and that I am a simple Dedicated and not the Master of Soldiers. All as if we were Clan Chief’s, he the victor and I the loser.”
“I would have admitted to overstepping my bounds if it had been brought to my attention, but acting as if I thought myself above my station was insulting. Talking about gai’shain and da’tsang as if he could truly understand the true depths of ji’e’toh.”
Herarn said this all with a growl. He was genuinely angry. But he wasn’t finished, “Reprimanded and insulted, it wasn’t enough. He had to gall to insinuate that I was having a dalliance with a Novice. Not only that but a Cairhienin Novice at that. I have had enough penances for my attitude towards Oath…. Towards Cairhienin, that I have been able to moderate my disdain for them. But taking one to my tent… I think that is not yet in my future.”

“He turned away flashing his swords at me as if I were some naïve wetland child afraid to Dance the Spears. I spoke up before he could leave. I informed him that he had assumed too much before he jumped to conclusions. I told him that the Novices were not simply talking, they were gossiping and don’t nothing. And I informed him that he had assumed incorrectly that I was having a relationship with a Novice… let alone a Tre…”

Herarn took a deep breath through his nose before releasing it out his mouth. He did this a couple times to center himself. “I have always been one to speak the truth. Even when speaking to an Asha’man, Aes Sedai, or a Gaidin/Gaidar. As part of my oaths to the Grey Tower, I am to uphold the Three Oaths. As such I speak truth, even when it may get me in trouble. So there was no real need to think about what was to be said, regardless of Ravak Gaidin’s rank or position within Tower politics.”

“Then he has the nerve to tell me that the facts are what he makes of them.” Said Herarn shaking his head. “I had informed him prior to this that I would report to Soti Asha’man for punishment as I had committed an offense, even though during my time as a Soldier, both Dedicated and Accepted alike handed out punishments to both Novices and Soldiers. Then he insults me further by implying that I cannot find my way to his office or that my ears are plugged with sand.”

Herarn did not know why, but he was still ridiculously angry and punched another stone pillar. This time there was a small explosion of blood across the pillar from his hand. “Son of a Light Blasted Sharan flipskirt, why am I so angry?”

He stopped and bowed his head, once again taking calming breaths attempting to get his center enough that he could wrap himself in the Void. When next he spoke it carried no emotion to it, making it evident that he was wrapped firmly in the Void. “As if that were not enough, he thought to use ji’e’toh as a weapon against me. “

“And I quote, ‘If you think ji’e’toh puts you in some special place apart from your fellow Dedicated and Accepted, you. Are. Mistaken.’ If he knew anything about ji’e’toh he would know that no warrior of honor would use it to elevate himself above his brothers. It is a guide post by which every Aiel, young and old, holds his behavior against. Those who find themselves lacking will Take the White.”

“The whole time he’s gripping the hilts of his swords as if looking for a reason to draw steel. Had he done so, I would have been forced to Take the White and probably find myself Gentled for the result. But before I could respond, Novice Avyra… well she tore into him without care for rank. Calling him a bully. Stating that he and his sister hate her. Then stormed off.”

“At which point Ravak Gaidin stormed off himself. I took a few moments to try, rather unsuccessfully, to call myself before heading to the Master of Soldier’s office to report my transgression. As I had promised. The rest, well you witnessed for yourself.”

With that he fell silent.
