First forays can be fun... (Attn Alianora)

Welcome to the Gardens: one of the most tranquil areas of the Tower Grounds. Birds sing in the trees which line the wide paths between beautiful flower beds and serene lakes. There are benches to sit and listen to the waterfall, and there is neatly trimmed grass to lie on and rest. Novices and Soldiers as well as Warders in Training can be seen, sweeping the stone paths as Accepted and Dedicated study from books and relax under leafy trees.

Sensing that he may have been too nonchalant with his reply, Callum decided to put extra effort into letting the man know he took the topic seriously. He paid close attention to his words, and when he was asked to stand up and move a short distance from the fountain he did so. Sitting down a few paces from Kalyan he did as he was told. Eyes closed, back straight, he envisioned a flame floating in utter emptiness and began to push his emotions toward it, imagining them being burned away by the fire.

It took longer than he'd imagined for him to reach a point of stillness, but suddenly, when he had, he sensed an intensely powerful force just out of reach, like a raging inferno, or a relentless river surging. He longed to reach out to it, but his thoughts returned to Kalyan's words. Without opening his eyes, he spoke. "I can sense it," and even to his ears his voice was completely lacking in inflection and tone, as if he was in a trance.

Kalyan Asha'man
As he waited for Callum to find the Void, Kalyan stretched, raising his arms above his head before replacing on them on the grass, where they'd been only a few seconds earlier. He had no desire to be a distraction to his student, and didn't mind the waiting he knew was necessary, but trying to sit still and do nothing but watch the other man was so terribly boring. The Asha'man looked up at the sky above, then back at his student. He tapped his fingers against his knees, stopping only when it occurred to him that the noise he was making was probably not going to help Callum focus. He studied the trees, the grass and the flowers, all while trying not to take his attention from his student for very long. Moving his legs, Kalyan sat with them straight in front of him for a while, then went back to sitting cross-legged. By the time Callum spoke, the Asha'man was sitting in the same position as he had been when he'd begun his explanation.

Kalyan scooted a little closer to the other man, then leaned forward. "Go ahead and try to seize hold of saidin now," he instructed. "But don't be disappointed if you can't. It can take months of practice and sensing it before you can successfully hold it." While Callum tried, Kalyan seized hold of the One Power himself and wove a shield. He very much did not want to have to use it, and hoped it wouldn't be needed, but he wanted to have it ready....just in case.

Callum heard the man's voice as if from a slight distance, but he followed the guidance, nonetheless. Reaching out he tried to seize hold of the huge source of power, but every time he tried, he was either hurled back, or it slipped through his fingers. He kept trying, over and over, remotely surprised that he wasn't frustrated by the failed attempts.

Finally, after quite a long time, he had to admit that his concentration was slipping and his ability to even sense saidin was growing weaker as well. As he felt the void shatter around him a deep sense of disappointment settled over him before he could stop it. He gave a sigh and opened his eyes. "Easier said than done..." he said, with a half-hearted chuckle and a slight smile. "It appears I will be one of the ones who takes months of practice."

Kalyan Asha'man
Kalyan shrugged, then smiled. "Don't worry about it," the Asha'man said. "I told you it can take months because for many of us, it does. You did well just being able to sense it today. It took me weeks to even manage that, months before I could seize the One Power...and I'm still here." Looking towards Callum, he added, "I'll see you tomorrow, back here again," and with that, dismissed the Soldier to go on with the rest of his day.

The next day found Kalyan sitting down in the grass again, in more or less the same place they'd been yesterday. He watched feet passing by on the nearby path, suspecting that Callum might not be as eager for today's lesson. It was necessary, or Kalyan wouldn't be putting him through it, but he remembered very well how boring it could get to just sit still, trying to sense something that was so hard to understand until you could.
