A Desperate Search.. but first some ale.. (open)

Hama Valon, the city around the Grey Tower.
Forum rules
Welcome to Hama Valon! The aptly named 'mountain guard' is the city that has grown up at the gates of the Grey Tower at the western edge of the Two Rivers. Like all cities, there are quiet quarters with pleasant inns, such as Elman's Creek, which used to be the nearest village when the Tower was young, but was absorbed as the new city grew; its Band of Brothers Inn is still a favorite relaxation spot for many of the Tower's denizens. And again, like all cities the world over, there are less pleasant places--narrow, nameless streets that house hells and other houses of ill repute. Most of the city falls somewhere in between, with hawkers crying their wares in the streets, respectable shopkeepers ready to serve you, and petty cutpurses happy to follow you.

Novices, Soldiers, and drin'far'ji must be accompanied by a chaperon when outside Tower walls or they risk being picked up as runaways and duly punished.

A Desperate Search.. but first some ale.. (open)

Takrin Medar
It had taken ages for him to get to this place, but Takrin Medar was finally here. The usually lighthearted and carefree young man’s face was showing evidence of extreme exhaustion. He was unshaven, his hair was unkempt, and he was dying for a good meal and some pretty company. As he studied the atmosphere of Hama Valon, he was momentarily frozen by indecision.

He’d spent weeks with the rescue teams at Tar Valon sorting through the rubble. He’d gone to all the places designated for the injured to recuperate and get medical attention. He’d even explored the farms and villages around the city. He finally heard that the novices of the White Tower had been evacuated to the Grey Tower, and so off he went in search of his sister.

Now that he was actually there at the Grey Tower, something gave him pause. If Thalina wasn’t here, he wasn’t sure what he could do. That very thought is what made him hesitate. If she was here, then she wouldn’t let him hear the end of it – coming to her stinking of travel. So, he made the decision to find a place to stay first and get cleaned up.

Takrin found what appeared to be a quiet and unassuming Inn. He paid for a room and a meal and took a seat at one of the tables off to the side. He was too tired to pay attention to whatever was going on at that moment. All he wanted was to eat, get cleaned up, and sleep. Then… then he’d find if he’d made this trip in vain. Tomorrow morning, he would learn if Thalina Medar had made it. For now, though, he would eat.

A very pretty woman set his bowl of stew down before him as well as a tankard of ale. He nodded at her and gave her one of his patented half smiles. She gave him a polite smile and hastily moved on to another table. He chuckled at himself. He didn’t blame her. He was sure he looked and smelled terrible.

Nate Carridus, Asha'man of the Blue Ajah At the outskirts of Hama Valon the taverns were quieter, the patrons more genteel, and the company usually more tolerable. Not that Nate was there for company - he came here specifically to avoid the places his peers might frequent. The last thing he needed was more interruptions from people who couldn't mind their own business in the work environment, never mind in his leisure time.

I suppose I do count it as work now, the Blue thought glumly to himself, it ain't how it used to be, that's for sure. Nate sat with a pair of oversized boots on the low table in front of him, hands resting around a mug of something dark and strong as he leaned back in his comfy chair. He wore what looked to be an Asha'man's uniform, at least from the bottom, as his black trousers were fairly standard. The black coat was slung over a different chair, and his dark blue shirt was haphazardly worn, and didn't quite fit properly. It was easier to keep the laces undone. On the floor nearby was his hammer, a great heavy weapon that was as dangerous as it looked. At least nobody could trip over it here, as the man sat out of the way of everyone else and minded his own business.

Nate had a view of the door, and he kept a lazy eye on it as he had a drink and mulled over what he was up to. People came and went, in small groups or alone, and he watched them all with equal levels of disinterest.

When the serving girl came over with the question in her eyes, he held his ale up to show he still had some left. "This should be my last," he supposed. The serving girl cut her eyes to the table she had just been to, and Nate looked that way as well. Some rough lad or other sat there, nothing exceptional that he could see. He looked like he'd been travelling, but around here they got their fair share of travellers. "Are you alright?" he asked the girl in a low voice. Had he done something to upset her?

The girl just shook her head briefly, "no, not at all," she replied just as quietly, "he just... smells."

Nate chuckled a little, his deep voice amused. "Alright then. If he does more than smell then let me know. I can at least sit on him until the Tower Guard arrive."

The serving girl smiled gratefully and went to continue her rounds, leaving Nate to his half-empty mug and the faint smell of ... he wasn't sure if it was stew, or the smelly lad, or perhaps a mix of the two. Nate wrinkled his nose but said nothing to antagonize the situation, he was there to relax after all. He'd step in if he needed to but otherwise Nate was happy to let the tavern do as it pleased.

Takrin Medar
The stew was eaten before Takrin even realized he was nearly done with it. He marveled at how hungry he must have been, and swallowed the last few drops of ale to accompany the his final scoops of stew. He sighed deeply, wonderfully sated, even though the food and drink had not been exactly the best. The serving girl had not come to see if he wanted anymore ale, but Takrin didn’t take it personally. He’d ignored his fair share of disheveled maidens. As an apology for his rough appearance and odor, he placed a few coins on the table for the lass.

Takrin stood and stretched, gathered his scant belongings, and was about to head off to his room when he noticed the man sitting a few tables over. He’d seen similarly dressed fellows here and there, and he knew what it meant. Takrin had heard that this Grey Tower had male channelers, and he knew that people were claiming that they were no longer in danger of going mad. Thalina has told him of the debates she had engaged in with other novices. That didn’t stop him from having a little bit of a shiver go down his spine. What had he expected, though? Another White Tower?

Then it dawned on him… this man is likely involved with the Grey Tower. Excitement made him momentarily forget that he was unfit for company, and he approached the quiet man. In his wild desperation, he also forgot to suppress his intense need. Later, he would realize he might have acted a bit touched in the head.

“I’m Takrin Medar,” he said abruptly without any manners, “I’m looking for my sister. She was a novice of the White Tower. Thalina. I.. I have her likeness in my bag..” He began to search through his bag right there, hands shaking. “I heard many of them are here. Novices, I mean. I’ve been looking all over. There was so much rubble...” He finally removed a piece of canvas that had been folded and crinkled numerous times. It revealed a wrinkled remnant of a painting. A girl of about 10 years with features much like his own was there. Beside her was a 7 year old boy that could be a young Takrin. “It’s an.. an old likeness but… have you seen her? Is she here?”

The look in his eyes was pleading.

Nate The Asha'man was quite aware of his surroundings so when the smelly lad made his way over, he was prepared. Not in a seize Saidin sort of way, he could look after himself just fine, but he made sure to put his pleasant welcoming face on, because he was supposed to be a nice guy and that's what nice guys did.

It was a little difficult when the guy just cut straight to the chase, but it sounded like this Takrin fellow was here with a purpose. It was his job as a Blue to help those who couldn't help themselves, so really this was right up his street. It was a little less world-destroying than his work in the Blight but no less important to Takrin. Nate lowered his feet from the table and planted them firmly on the ground, leaning forwards to set his drink down. Then he looked back to Takrin with a wry smile. The lad had his full attention now.

"Well I'm Nate," he said pointedly, "and I'm an Asha'man at the Grey Tower so you've come to the right place. Now, I don't know much about the Novices, but I was at the White Tower when it was being cleared, and we did bring a bunch of Novices from there to here." Nate gestured to the painting with a hand, "can't say I recognise the face, but I don't mingle with the girls in training, that ain't my job."

The White Tower was quite the mess, and Nate had no small involvement in that thanks to his Earth weaving skills, but he didn't see the need to point that out to Takrin. "We got as many people out of there as we could," he said instead, which wasn't a lie. Nate didn't swear the Oaths, he had better things to do than try not to lie and besides, he told the truth anyway, and he needed to know how could set someone on fire if he had to. "Yer sister might be here, she might not. There's a lot of girls, but we can ask the Mistress of Novices. She's got a list of every girl here.

"I can take you to her," Nate continued, "but first you might wanna.... uhhh.." the Mayener had no way of being polite about it, "clean up a bit. First impressions are important and you don't wanna look a mess for your sister, right?"

Takrin Medar
As the Asha’man spoke, much of Takrin’s anxiety seemed to wash away. There was hope, not that he didn’t believe that the girls had been brought here, but there was always this nagging feeling in his gut that he would never find Thalina, never know whether she was alive or dead. Fleetingly, a modicum of anger slipped into his heart that this man had been there but had not stayed to clear the rubble or find anyone that might not have been evacuated in time.

Maybe he was there, and I just didn’t see it…, the Andorman thought, trying to quell the unreasonable surge of anger. Priorities, man. Find Thalina, then yell irately at people.

He was lost in this inner struggle when Nate finished speaking. It took him a moment, mentally reviewing what the man had said, to understand. His ears reddened with embarrassment when he realized he had, in a way, violated this man’s right to a quiet drink in a tavern – as well as likely offending his nose.

“Err… Right! Right. I’ll uh… just give me a.. I’ll be back,” Takrin chalked up his awkwardness to the long journey and the constant worry for his sister’s welfare. It didn’t help that this was the first time he’d conversed with an Asha’man. It still gave him shivers thinking about them, despite the good rumors. He was usually quite suave, at least in his own opinion, though he usually saved his ‘suave mode’ for charming ladies.

In his room, which he’d already paid for, Takrin took advantage of the washing bowl and used the razor he carried in his bag to trim a little of the hair on his face and head. He changed into a fresh set of clothes, chewed on some mint, and dabbed a little scented oil here and there. He usually saved that for dances, but this was just as special. Once he felt more like himself, he re-entered the common room. He pondered the best way to go about this, remembering how mad he must have seemed earlier.

So, taking a deep breath, Takrin once more approached Nate the Asha’man, only this time he remembered to use his ‘charm the authority figure’ demeanor. He extended his hand.

“I’m Takrin Medar,” he said again, “that insane guy from earlier was not me.” He gave his most apologetic grin, feeling hopeful, as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He was finally going to find his sister. “Well, Asha’man Nate, take me to your leader.” He paused, “Not sure why I’ve always wanted to say that. And I know this woman in charge of the girls isn’t your leader, but.. wait, is she? Ah, it doesn’t matter. What I mean to say is… I am ready.”

Nate The lad was quick to head on upstairs and make himself more presentable without putting up any argument, so the Blue contented himself with sitting back and finishing his drink. His time in the tavern might be cut short but it couldn't be helped, and at least he was able to finish up before Takrin returned looking far more tidy. Nate nudged his mug aside in a gesture to show he was done, and when the lad extended his hand he offered his own, dwarfing the man's with his own. "A pleasure," he said as he shook hands. He then got to his feet, hoisting up his hammer and holding it with his right hand, balanced on his shoulder so the hammer head stuck out behind him. He let the lad babble himself into silence with little more than a raised eyebrow, though his expression wasn't unkind when he finally answered.

"You won't be seeing my Leader; they won't be needed for this. Miahala Sedai however, is..." she wasn't his leader, but she did have more authority. "It doesn't really matter, we specialise in different areas." Nate left some coin on the table and stomped on outside, making sure to grab his coat in his free hand. He slung that over the same shoulder as his hammer.

The air outside was cool and Nate inhaled deeply, wishing he had another ale or two to appreciate the evening with. "It's gonna rain later," he said knowingly, looking up at the moderately cloudy night sky. "Anyway. The Grey Tower's that ridiculously tall building over there, impossible to miss. Still a bit of a walk, Hama Valon's more than just a Tower. Anyways, it's this way and I can get you in without having to petition, so stick close to me." He did make sure Takrin didn't stray too far, and he took them down what he felt to be the best roads to get them to the Grey Tower safely and quickly. The streets were quieter at this time but people still made plenty of space for Nate's hulking form and his new companion.

It was a bit of a trek and Nate initially walked without offering any real commentary, but he realised he ought to play at being a better host. "So tell me about yerself Takrin," he said. "Where are you from? Accent says it ain't the Borderlands, but it's not the south either. Not stuffy enough for Cairhien, not cool enough for Mayene. Must be Andor?" Nate grinned, "I'm from Mayene myself. Lots of people from all over the land end up at the Grey Tower eventually. I hope yer sister's here. If she is, Miahala will now. She's the Mistress of Novices, they have a book and everything. If she's not, then we'll do what we can to help find her." At least, Nate would. He didn't think Miahala would personally oversee any searches for lost White Tower Novices, but it was important to Nate. Perhaps Gretchen and her embassy at the White Tower could pull some strings, though there wasn't really much left to pull there. Hopefully the girl would be at the Tower, and they could get on with their lives. Nate smiled down at Takrin and slapped him on the back hard, "one way or another we'll work it out, yeah?"

Jaryd
Jaryd did not particularly enjoy adding more to the pile of debt he owed Rodric Amadeo, but it wasn’t like the lumbering jackass had given him a choice this time. No...the opposite, in fact: Rodric had taken the soldiers on an entirely unsanctioned ‘field trip’ that afternoon, which in turn led to a crowd of grown men nodding off in their supper plates like overwrought children.

Pushing the limits of channeling really did take it out of you, and Rodric -bless his bloody bones- had coaxed every last drop of effort from his students on their excursion. It took a bare moment of consideration before Jaryd clapped his hands and sent them to bed en masse. When he only got a few feeble “screw off, you’re not my real dad” remarks in response to his edict, Jaryd knew he’d made the correct decision.

The Dedicated could take care of themselves for a single night and Jaren was enjoying a late chat with his sister, leaving Jaryd with little to do in his newly empty evening. He wandered into the Red Ajah’s map room, his mind already scrambling over what the Ajah needed to do next, and whether he would need to order wine from the kitchen. When eh arrived, however, Mael took one look at Jaryd’s face and ordered him to get the hell out before he broke something important.

A quarter bell later found Jaryd crouched on a roof outside the Tower grounds. The growing dusk had deepened with the gathering of clouds, the gloom clinging to his dusky face and rough gray clothes like an old friend long missed. After only a breath or two of enjoying the silence, Jaryd flexed his fingers, pushed off, and ran. His laughter trailed behind him as he leapt and scrambled and climbed over Hama Valon, lost in a world he hadn’t enjoyed for far too long.

Some time later, he noticed a familiar figure working its way up the street toward the Tower proper, next to a not so familiar figure. Jaryd followed them for a little while, noting that the stranger moved with the energy of someone new to the city, and appeared to be quite young. A new student? Eventually his curiosity got the better of him; Jaryd circled ahead, and when they passed by a particular building with an overhanging roof, he dropped from the sky to land in front of the two with a grin wide enough to span a river.

“Hey there, Nate. Mind some company?” he asked, nodding to the Blue. He glanced at the other man, giving him a rapid once over as he spoke. “And you’re new, I imagine. Welcome to Hama Valon, stranger. I'm Jaryd.”

Takrin Medar
Takrin breathed a sigh of relief that the Asha’man accepted the handshake and the re-introduction for he would have been at a loss without the man’s introduction to the woman in charge of novices. He wasn’t sure he would have been able to overlook his wild-eyed desperation were their situations reversed. He ran a hand through his hair as he followed the Mayener out of the tavern.

When he had arrived in Hama Valon, he had been so travel-worn that he had practically ignored everything that wasn’t a potential Inn. Now, though, he saw the place for what it was – a bustling village that was seemingly still growing. Maybe one day it would rival Caemlyn, but it was nothing like Tar Valon. The Asha’man mentioned the weather, and Takrin simply nodded. There were clouds, yes. It could rain. His mind was preoccupied with thoughts of being in the presence of someone he once thought would go crazy and kill everyone – and thoughts of finally achieving his harrowing quest’s end.

His eyes fell on the Grey Tower as Nate indicated its location. It would have been hard to miss; that was true. A tall building peeking above the rooves of the budding town of Hama Valon. To think his sister might be just right over there. Light, he hoped so.
“So, tell me about yourself, Takrin,” Nate said. “Where are you from? Accent says it ain’t the Borderlands, but it’s not the south, either. Not stuffy enough for Cairhien, not cool enough for Mayene. Must be Andor?” The man grinned. “I’m from Mayene myself. Lots of people from all over the land end up at the Grey Tower, eventually. I hope yer sister’s here. If she is, Miahala will know. She’s the Mistress of Novices, they have a book and everything. If she’s not, then we’ll do what we can to help find her.”
Takrin had grown accustomed to the quiet, and it took a moment for him to respond. “Well, you got me there, Mayene.” He gave a slight grin. “I’m Andorman, born and raised. Not much else to tell. Help out on my ma’s farm when I’m not lazin’ about and causin’ trouble. At least that’s the way she’d put it…” He paused for a moment, growing serious with his next words. “I really hope Miahala Sedai can help.”

The boy winced just slightly when the Asha’man clasped his back but tried to cover said wince with a smile. He knew it was probably meant to be comforting or jovial, but he was still trying not to think of the man’s ability to channel. He wasn’t completely convinced about the rumors his sister and others had mentioned.

“Yea, I do apprec— Light burn me for a bloody goat-spawned toad!” Takrin nearly jumped out of his skin when this strange man just jumped down in front of them. Immediately embarrassed at his reaction – as the man’s actions reflected something he himself might do – the Andorman cleared his throat. “I mean… Hello. I guess I’m new. Definitely new in town. Takrin’s my name…”

He tilted his head. In the light of a few lamps along the road, it was difficult to tell, but he was certain he’d seen the man before. He was notably short, and he was sure he had seen someone of his stature and likeness somewhere. Takrin put it in the back of his mind for now; there was no reason to dwell on that when he had bigger things to worry about.

His hand lingered in his pocket – the one that held the old crumpled canvas. He doubted it would do any good to ask the man about Thalina. Nate was showing him the way to this Aes Sedai who would know more than anyone would.

That’s when it dawned on him. He’d seen this Jaryd outside of the White Tower on the day of the disaster. His eyes widened.

“You were there,” he murmured in a breathy voice almost inaudible. “You were there! I saw you!” He said it much louder that time.

Nate Nate didn't mind Miahala and he was pretty sure she could help (even if she was a Green and she liked setting things on fire; Nate could relate). He was going to tell the man thus but they were soon interrupted by a shock of curls and a smile Nate thought he could emulate, once, when he was younger and less serious.

Nate didn't necessarily expect to be dropped upon from the rooftops at night, but much to his credit - and a testament of his training - his instant reaction was little more than to bring his other hand up to grip at the handle of his hammer. It retreated when he realised it was Jaryd, but he'd been ready to swing it. Other than that though, he looked pretty much the same as usual.

"Jaryd." Nate nodded his own head in return at the teeny tiny man. The Blue shared none of the old and frankly tiring traits of some of his older Ajah members who did not see eye to eye with the Red Ajah for some reason. Nate had a lot of respect for what they did and had things turned out slightly differently, he could have been one himself. As it was he was mostly content with his Ajah choice, though he did prefer the company of Reds to most of his fellow Blues. Perhaps it was because he shared their drive to get things done. "It's going to rain in a while so I hope you're dressed for the weather. I hear rooftops get slippery when wet."

His new companion Takrin introduced himself normally enough, once he got over Jaryd's sudden appearance. Nate couldn't blame him, it wasn't every day a bouncy Altaran jumped out at you from above your head, but it did amuse him a little nonetheless. Takrin didn't take long to go from cordial to dramatic, and the Blue breathed through his nose and forced a bemused groan to become a patient sigh instead. Of course Jaryd was at the White Tower, a number of folk were, and he would likely see some more between now and when they had dealt with the whereabouts of his sister. He kept his voice fairly civil, he was supposed to be a friendly person, but perhaps some of his latent irritation did shine through. He couldn't even call it uncharacteristic any more, could he? It was saturated into his bones by circumstance.

"Yes Takrin, Jaryd is one of our most competent channellers and he was also at the White Tower. We're likely going to see a fair few more people at the White Tower between now and then, but let me be clear: we were there to help, not in a personal slight against your sister." He looked back to the Red, "Takrin's sister was a Novice at the White Tower, so we're going to find Miahala to see if she's one of the girls that came in when we were at the White Tower helping the people there." The last part was a little more pointed, for Takrin's benefit. Nate worked bloody hard at the White Tower, and he had a lot of respect for the people who went to help basically salvage what his team had helped destroy. Not without purpose or cause, that wasn't the Blue way, so he wasn't going to let Takrin get twitchy whenever he saw someone who might have been involved in the relief efforts.

Jaryd
The stranger gave a particularly satisfying reaction to Jaryd’s abrupt appearance, and it was all the Red could do not to laugh. He suspected the other man would take such a response poorly, however, and it would not do to annoy a potential new student. Therefore, Jaryd held his peace through the spiel that followed. Instead he just nodded acknowledgement of the introduction and pretended that the explosion of swearing had not occurred.

When Nate spoke up, he did allow himself to smile again. “Wet clothes and slippery roofs are a nuisance my southern soul could do without, it’s true,” he said cheerfully. “I’ve had a good run tonight...perhaps I’ll take myself indoors for a while.” He was about to speak up and invite the Blue for a glass of wine after he was done with whatever he was doing, but Takrin interrupted.

“You were there. You were there! I saw you!” The boy’s voice rose as he spoke, and Jaryd looked back to him, eyebrows lifting toward his hairline. His mind began to sort through recent events, trying to pinpoint which awkward or (from an outsider’s perspective) incriminating scenario this newcomer might have witnessed him in. Illian? Tanchico? Nothing seemed to fit. He found himself gnawing on the inside of his lip as he thought. It wasn’t that he couldn’t handle the inevitable fallout from a witness to his work; it was far from the first time he’d had to do such a thing. He just...really didn’t want to do it tonight.

Thankfully Nate came to the rescue before Jaryd wreaked too much havoc on the inner tissues of his mouth. The Altaran visibly relaxed as the other man spoke. Yes, Tar Valon. Tar Valon had been a disaster in nearly every way. He’d nearly lost Jaren, they’d nearly all died, and the White Tower itself had fallen to ruin and Shadow. It could even feasibly be argued that Jaryd’s involvement had escalated matters, given Marisa’s apparent vendetta, but he had neatly side stepped questions on that front. Sometimes being Red had its perks.

All things considered, it was morbidly humorous that Tar Valon happened to be the safest place a stranger could have observed Jaryd at work in recent years.

“I see,” he said in an easy tone. “Were you in Tar Valon when the Tower fell, then? I’m afraid I don’t recall seeing you; everything about that day was ten shades of messy. We will have to talk about it sometime, you and I.” Had Takrin been in the city? The Tower itself? How had he escaped, if the latter? Jaryd pushed his thoughts away in favor of something far more immediate. “If your sister is here, we certainly have a record of her attendance. If Mia’s not around, I have access to the novice book the same as she. Let’s get it over with, shall we?”

He channeled as he spoke, a small globe of light appearing above the hand he used to wave them forward. It seemed a simple matter of courtesy, that light. Jaryd watched Takrin intently as they walked, however, alert for any sign of the resonance he knew would surely appear if the boy could channel.
