Lessons in Ter'Angreal attn: Elia

Post by Alianora » March 24th, 2019, 9:10 pm

Amaranie Tice
The Vaults were one of Amaranie's favorite places in the Tower, though the Accepted had not always felt that way. At first, all the unknown objects contained within made her nervous, but the more time she spent working among them, the more comfortable she became. Now, as she walked through halls and passed various storerooms, the space seemed familiar, as if she were there to visit an old friend. The Accepted barely had to look at the doors she passed in order to get to her destination. She turned one corner, then another, finally arriving in a part of the Vaults that held a number of small workrooms.

Opening the door to the room she most often used, where today's lesson would take place, Amaranie studied the room. There was not much in it, other than a small desk and a couple of chairs. She moved towards the desk, but stood beside it instead of taking a chair. She studied the desk, thinking of all the time she had spent working there. Overall, she was learning, but she had had far more failures than successes. Her Indigo teachers all insisted that was normal, but sometimes, Amaranie struggled to believe them. She wanted to learn, to understand her strange Talent for creating objects that used the One Power and make it do as she wished, and that was why she'd scheduled today's lesson. Still standing, she redirected her gaze from the desk and towards the door, awaiting the arrival of her teacher.

Elia Darrow
There were many trappings that came along with being at the Grey Tower. Expectations of duty and ability were placed on you when the Amyrlin slipped a Great Serpent ring on your right hand. Expectations rose again when a coloured shawl was placed over your shoulders. Elia wore both proudly, happy for all to see she was an Aes Sedai of the Indigo Ajah. Some trappings followed even after shedding yourself for their origins. She had been the First Seeker, at the top of the Indigo Ajah. Fellow Indigos expected things of Elia Darrow, no matter who she was now. And then as Amyrlin, she'd placed herself far above all those below her. Returning to their level, the aura of the Watcher of the Seals buffered her from others, positively and negatively. Now latterly she was the Mistress of Novices. Aes Sedai didn't think much about the Mistress of Novices, aside from her wrath if they interfered too far with 'her children'.

"Hogswallop." She felt testy. During her period of withdrawal from Tower Life, most of her concerns had been trivial. Thrust back into the heart of things, feeling the eyes of the Tower upon her once again made her mad. The one and worse trapping that she had been put under, that of being a Darkfriend, was of all things the least of her concerns now. How did something so fundamentally and monumentally important slip down below the concerns that a novice may catch her making a mistake?

Bitter and angry, Elia sought refuge in the one place she never felt judging, where the eyes upon her were never judgemental. Her skirt trailed slightly on the stone steps as she descended towards the Vaults. The haze of emotions cleared the closer she stepped towards her goal, the weight of her duties and responsibilities sliding away until only one singular task remained: to illuminate the mind of one soul to the wonders of the Power.

Upon the threshold of the workroom, Elia paused. Her mind felt light and her shoulders felt unburdened. It was a worldly serenity that only the touch of saidar could exceed. A playful, near-to-joyous smile graced her lips as she pushed down on the door's handle.

Elia knew Amaranie. They had talked at length in the past. If the Amadician didn't choose the Indigo Ajah, Elia was going to eat a slipper, although only one that had fallen out of style. She wasn't going to let good footwear go to waste, even on such a strong channeller. But today was a time to see if all of that strength could be converted into results.

"Good morning, child. I hope you are doing well; you look well." Walking towards the Accepted and the desk, Elia gestured for Amaranie to take a seat. "Now today, we're going to try to make something a bit fun. A bit of an impractical ter'angreal, but a ter'angreal nonetheless."

The Indigo placed a wooden rod down on the desk with her unwithered hand. It reflected light like it was made of glass, and it also felt like glass to the touch.

"Inspect it if you like, or we can go straight to the crafting. We're here for you to learn after all."
OOC: You can find a description of Elia's ter'angreal in The Vaults. It's the eighth item down in the ter'angreal section.

Accepted Amaranie
The door creaked open, and the waiting Accepted swept into a low curtsy before looking up at Elia Sedai. This would not be the first time she'd worked under the supervision of the Indigo, but Amaranie still found the familiar face to be just slightly intimidating. She forced a nervous smile, giving a brief nod to the Aes Sedai's question, then seated herself in one of the two chairs.

At first, she only stared at the object that rolled to a stop on the desk. Fun? Impractical? Amaranie had little recent experience with either of those words. While she found her work in the Vaults to be endlessly fascinating, it was still most definitely work, hard work over many long days. The Accepted gave Elia Sedai little attention as she studied the ter'angreal before her. Long, thin, and brown, it had an odd shine to it that made it difficult to guess what it might have been made from.

After a moment of hesitation, Amaranie reached out and picked it up. It had a surprising weight in her hand, and she folded her fingers gently around it, resting her hand on the desk. She bent her head over it to study it more closely. Though it seemed to be formed from wood, the weight of it and its reflective quality were more suggestive of glass. It was quite an interesting effect, but gave her no hint of any potential use.

The Accepted lifted her hand, standing the ter'angreal upright on the desk, then raised it again, turning the object in the air until the other end was on the desk. Laying it down again, she even let it roll for a few seconds before stopping it, but that was about as far as Amaranie was willing to go. She'd never had much of an interest in studying ter'angreal already in existence, preferring to work towards creating new ones, but she did know that too much experimentation could be dangerous. She removed her hand from the ter'angreal, leaving it to lie on the desk.

Amaranie looked up to see Elia Sedai, apparently waiting for her to finish. "It's much heavier than I thought it would be," she observed. "It looks as if it may have been wooden, once, but it also seems to be made from glass." That didn't sound as if it quite made sense, but with ter'angreal, Amaranie knew it was quite possible that she was correct, and that this item now had qualities of both. Her voice dropped as she continued, "I couldn't work out what it might do." She knew she'd done well enough with the limited inspection she'd dared give it, but Amaranie couldn't help feeling just a little disappointed with herself for not being able to even manage a guess. She certainly could not imagine what the ter'angreal had to do with the fun Elia Sedai had mentioned earlier.

Elia
A genuine smile continued to grace the Indigo's pale face as Amaranie looked over the ter'angreal. The Accepted's approach was both thorough and rudimentary. Elia knew that Amaranie didn't have the natural touch she herself possessed with ter'angreal, that affinity that connected the channeller and object beyond the limits of the senses. It was a wonder how Indigos without that affinity managed to do anything with ter'angreal at all. To Elia, it was like asking someone to live without breathing oxygen. Impossible, yet fish somehow managed.

Elia listened to the Accepted's report, disappointed yet unsurprised that Amaranie didn't divine the ter'angreal's purpose. She looked a bit like a fish, eyes slightly vacant like there wasn't much between the ears. Troubled, she thought, or perhaps lonely. Difficult to tell without asking more, but this wasn't the time nor place for talking about the girl's problems.

"Not one to hazard a guess? Well, that is likely wise and prudent. I would not like to wager how many of the Vaults' contents do things you would not expect just by looking at them." Elia took hold of the ter'angreal just before she embraced the Source. Holding the rod outstretched in her good arm, she aimed it towards the closed door. Using only a thin thread of Air, she connected saidar with the rod.

Bursting forth from the far end of the ter'angreal streamed a jet of multicoloured particulates, each one so fine that they were individually impossible to see. The stream of colourful specks ran the full gamut, from indigo to orange, red to green, white to black. The doorway was coated in sparkly sand-like flecks as they found their way into every recess that would hold them. The rest accumulated at the foot of the door like a pile of multicoloured snow.

Elia stopped channelling into the ter'angreal and the rainbow of colour stopped. All of the grains of colour remained where they had landed, threatening the shoes of the next person to enter the room. Elia's face was split with a wide grin.

"Fun and impractical," the Indigo stated in satisfaction. "A little something I conjured up during my years as an Accepted. Fortunately, I was never foolhardy enough to try using this on anyone." Glancing back at the door, she was very glad for that. The sand clung to everything.

After placing the rod on the table, Elia stood up and took a circuitous path away from the shimmering floor. There was a wooden box on one shelf, a remnant from when Elia used to teach classes on making ter'angreal. Inside the box were a few pieces of wood about a foot in length. Birch wood. She picked up two of the sticks, then returned to Amaranie, placing one of the wooden rods on the table in front of her.

"A stick just like this became that ter'angreal." She gestured to the glassy rod on the table. Beneath the sheen, the silver-hued wood seemed to be the same as the two wooden rods Elia had returned with. "You can use just about anything to make a ter'angreal, or an angreal or sa'angreal, but understand that each base material has its own properties. Wood can do things stone cannot, and porcelain allows for things the other two will not reproduce. Then there are all of the different types of metals." She gestured vaguely with her withered hand, not wishing to turn this into a metallurgy class.

"So Amaranie, do you have any thoughts on how this--" Elia pointed to the wooden rod on the table, "--becomes this?" Her finger moved over to the ter'angreal.
I'll let Amaranie process everything before moving on to teaching. This post was getting long.

Accepted Amaranie
Amaranie's eyes followed the shining rod as the Indigo picked it up and pointed it at the door. There was clearly a purpose behind the movement, but Amaranie couldn't begin to guess what it was. Her curiousity turned to surprise as Elia Sedai channeled Air into the ter'angreal and tiny bits of color sprayed out. Amaranie leaned forward, squinting at them, and while she couldn't make out any individual pieces, the jet of color that poured from the rod appeared to contain every color in the rainbow. It collided with the door, the particles trickling down to pool in front of it and drifting into nearby cracks and crevices.

The floor near the door of the classroom was practically sparkling with color by the time Elia Sedai finished channeling. Amaranie didn't actually see her do this, because the Accepted was still staring at the multicolored floor. It's so pretty! Her ideas tended to run much more towards the practical and useful, and Amaranie would never have dreamed that the One Power could be used to create such an effect. Her eyes remained fixed on it for several minutes, awed by what saidar could do, until it occurred to her that Elia Sedai was standing there and might want her attention.

When she looked at the Indigo, the Aes Sedai was.....grinning? Yes, that was what she was doing, but Amaranie couldn't recall the last time she'd ever seen an Aes Sedai display such emotion. In response, she dared a small, quick smile of her own before looking down at the stick Elia Sedai placed in front of her. So, this is what that rod was made from...that makes sense. It also proved her theory that the ter'angreal had originally been wood correct, which pleased her.

Amaranie listened carefully to what Elia Sedai said, though she'd heard much of it in other lessons. She had learned a great deal about making ter'angreal by now, yet possessing the knowledge and putting that knowledge to use were two very different things. Her gaze darted back and forth over the length of the wood as she considered what would have been used to make the ter'angreal. Air was obvious, since it was used to make the item work, and Amaranie suspected that Earth was also involved, but how? And in what amounts? She tapped the fingers of her right hand on her left arm as she considered the answers to those questions.

When she finished thinking, the Accepted looked up into the green eyes of the Indigo. Amaranie wasn't entirely sure how it had been made, but she thought she at least had a good idea of which Powers would be used. "I don't know exactly how it would be made," she said quietly, "but I think it would require Air, Earth, and Spirit. Earth, because it's wood, and might be part of creating those shiny bits. Air to make it work, and to carry them...and Spirit to hold the weave together and change it from being wooden to whatever it is now." She hoped Elia Sedai hadn't expected a more precise and detailed explanation of exactly how to create the effect she'd just seen, or the Aes Sedai was going to be disappointed.

Elia
Elia nodded ever so slightly. A nod to acknowledge that she had heard the Accepted, not a nod which agreed with Amaranie's thoughts. In truth, working out that much only using one's eyes and brain was an above average accomplishment. How the girl managed to get this far without the knack for ter'angreal still astounded Elia, if one could find astoundment in Accepted. No, that's going too far, she thought. She was just puzzled by it and irritated at no answer was forthcoming.

Finally, Elia's placid look softened. Instead of trying to work out the how of Amaranie's gifts, it was time to see what those gifts could do. To that end, Elia reached out to move the rod on the desk so that it was angled between the two channellers. The Mistress of Novices could weave in full view of Amaranie without tangling herself up in the process.

"Rather than answer the question," Elia stated, "I shall show you how to create this ter'angreal. In my formative years, I had a male colleague who would say that 'you will almost certainly get this wrong' when you try." The Shienaran's tongue made a clicking sound of disgust. "I place a little more faith in your chances of getting this right the first time, but what the Wheel weaves, we will work with."

Turning her attention from Amaranie to the rod, Elia relaxed in order to embrace saidar. The touch of the One Power was joy made manifest, but she'd tasted temptation a hundred hundredfolds. After the initial rush, Elia's mind focused on her task. "If you need to child, embrace saidar so you may see my flows."

First, she created a netting of Air around the log, crisscrossing the surface at regular intervals. Thin strands of Fire interspersed the thicker flows of Air, heat to help shape the wood. With the weave complete, it slowly shrunk in size, until it matched the dimensions of the completed ter'angreal on the table. The wood warped and shimmered as it reshaped itself, the surface turning glassy as the flows of Fire settled into it. There was a flash of saidar as the rod seemed to absorb Air and Fire.

The second part involved Fire and Earth. They were Elia's weakest two parts of the Power, but she overcame strength in the Power with well-honed expertise. She made a ring of Fire that matched the size of the newly-formed rod. Inside she slowly created a reservoir of Earth, the green-hued lines thin and reedy. As soon as the Earth was in place, she placed a simple knot of Air in the middle. The disc of Earth and Fire started to slowly spin with the knot in place, and she guided that moving weave into one end of the smooth wooden rod. Again there was a shimmer and flash of saidar as the weave was absorbed.

Finally, she entwined two flows, one of Air and one of Spirit, and weaved them directly into the body of the rod. It wasn't even a proper weave, but the two entwined flows made the ter'angreal work properly, somehow. Even after making countless copies of this ter'angreal, she had no more idea than when she had first succeeded. There was no flash when she stopped channelling, but she knew the act was complete.

At last, she released saidar. Some senses dulled without the embrace of saidar, some heightened. Elia became more painfully aware of the pressure along her temples that always occurred when she channelled Earth. It was a flaw she had not yet overcome.

Elia reached over to the desk to take hold of the newly formed ter'angreal. She placed it in her lap, only to replace the ter'angreal on the table with a new length of wood. "Now for a first attempt Amaraine, and hopefully a successful one."
This used to be a class I taught, and these were the notes for it:
Spoiler: show
Your task is to recreate the weaves in an effort to create your own ter'angreal. Afterwards you will attempt to use it under Elia's supervision. Inevitably something will go wrong. A few suggestions are listed below:
  • General Side Effects: When channelling into the ter'angreal, your character may experience any of the following: nausea, extreme fatigue, heartburn, chills, headaches, etc.
  • Weakness with Air: If your character is weak with Air, then the original forming of the rod may go awry. This could result in a misshaped rod, or a lack of a glassy veneer. When channelling into the ter'angreal, glitter may simply spill out from the end instead of spraying out in a funnel.
  • Weakness with Earth: If your character is weak with Earth, then the particles of glitter may be sparse or barely visible. Alternately, all of the glitter may come out dull or dusty, or you may have just created a Dust Rod instead of a Glitter Rod.
  • Weakness with Fire: If your character is weak with Fire, then the original forming of the rod may go awry. This could result in a misshaped rod, or a lack of a glassy veneer. Alternately, all of the glitter may come out dull or black, or lack any sparkle.
  • Weakness with Spirit: If your character is weak with Spirit, general side effects are more likely. However, you may also find that the ter'angreal simply does not work, or needs an extreme amount of Air channelled into it to produce any effect.

Accepted Amaranie
Amaranie leaned forward in her chair, dark head bent over the table, wondering whether the answer she'd given had been anything close to correct. She reached for saidar when she was told she could, and from that point on, the Accepted barely moved as she paid close attention to Elia Sedai's weaving. As with all the ter'angreal Amaranie knew of, the weaves required were complex, and she just hoped she'd be able to remember them all when it was her turn. Air and Fire, then Fire and Earth, then Air and Spirit.... It pleased her to find that she had not been too far off in her attempt to determine what Powers were needed. Complicated as it might be, the weaves Elia Sedai demonstrated seemed to make innate sense to her, but Amaranie still watched carefully, not moving her eyes from the ter'angreal until Elia Sedai removed the finished object from the table and announced that it was time for her to attempt it.

The Accepted swallowed nervously, then pulled strands of Air, shaking her head when she noticed how thick they were. Air always seemed to want to dominate her weaving, and she struggled to refine them, releasing her threads twice before managing to get them thin enough to be useful. Still, when she wrapped them around the rod, the Air weaves looked oddly like some sort of fluffy box surrounding it. She kept working, twining much thinner weaves of Fire between the Air threads, and Amaranie knew she had it right when the finished weave sank in.

The piece of wood immediately took on the shiny appearance that the Aes Sedai's example had, though Amaranie thought it looked more than a little crooked, nothing like the straight rod it had been when she'd started. She frowned, but kept going, taking her time with the circles of Fire and Earth that came next. The large knot of Air Amaranie placed in the middle looked as if it were nearly licking at the edges of the Fire and Earth containing it. It spun slower than Elia Sedai's had, but it did spin, so the Accepted let it sink into the end of the rod. Finally, she pulled another thread of Air and one of Spirit, and laid them directly on top of her creation.

Raising her head, Amaranie blinked, then reached for the rod, turning it over in her hands. As she'd noticed earlier, the shiny wood seemed to have warped, settling into slight curves instead of being straight. She didn't think it would work as well as Elia Sedai's had, if it worked at all, even though everything else about it appeared to be correct. She replaced it on the table in front of her, awaiting Elia Sedai's judgment of her work.

Elia
Elia's emerald eyes watched the flows of saidar intently, although she could have gathered just the same information from feeling the weaves with her eyes shut. Too much Air. Amaranie came to the same conclusion, although the final weave the Accepted layered around the wood still wasn't quite there.

The later weaves followed a similar pattern, with Air overwhelming the other powers. Whilst she had overseen hundreds of students over her years attempting these same weaves, Elia couldn't say what the end result would be. Normally there was a deficit in one power that caused problems. In Amaranie's case, there seemed to be no deficit, unless the deficit was in Earth, Fire, Spirit, and Water. Maybe Cloud Dancing would be a better application of her talents.

Elia did not give into daydreaming on what ifs, restoring her attention to her student. With the final weave complete, Amaranie gave it a visual inspection before placing it on the table.

The Talent for ter'angreal differed from channeller to channeller. In the Aes Sedai's case, she needed to channel to feel out an Object of the One Power. Without touching it, she hovered a hand above the rod. Thin streams of Air and Spirit spun from her palm, inspecting the ter'angreal like the tentacles of an octopus. Knowing what to expect allowed Elia to make an assessment quickly. It was safe to use. Beyond that, the margins of success would become self-evident once used.

Returning her good hand to her lap and relinquishing saidar again, Elia nodded for Amaranie to take the ter'angreal in hand. "Time to see how well you did."

Feel free to use the ter'angreal and/or make a new one in one post if you so desire, just so I'm not holding you back on getting your Talent Points.

Accepted Amaranie
Amaranie swallowed, then picked up the rod and raised it in front of her, pointed at the door. Only one thin thread of Air was needed for it to work, but the Accepted's first few attempts at pulling that one thin thread resulted instead in strands closer to the thickness of her arm. She did not think she wanted to know what would happen if she used one of those, so instead, Amaranie let them go and kept trying until she had one that seemed close to what Elia Sedai had used. Carefully, she touched it to the end of the ter'angreal in front of her, and sparks of color shot from it. Where Elia Sedai's had produced a controlled effect, however, hers was much more forceful, and while most of the specks hit the targeted door, a few smaller streams split off and flew in different directions. One of these arced directly over Elia Sedai's head, spilling onto the floor and table behind her, and Amaranie's eyes widened as she immediately dropped the Air thread to stop the flow.

Some of the stray particles had landed on her own sleeve as well, and Amaranie tried to brush them away as she looked nervously at the Aes Sedai. Technically, her creation had worked, but Amaranie did not consider it anything close to success. She held her breath, expecting harsh criticism, but when none came, blinked and reached for another of the sticks that lay on the table. This attempt hadn't worked as well as she would have liked, and Amaranie wanted to try it again.

When she reached for saidar, Elia Sedai said nothing, which Amaranie took to mean that she would be allowed that second chance. She struggled with the Air threads, working slowly until the construction surrounding her work did not look likely to crush the wood within it when she let go. Fire was no better, being difficult for her to find, but once she had them, adding more Fire to several, the threads she wove into her box of Air were thicker than they had been for that first attempt. She thought it looked closer to what she'd seen when Elia Sedai demonstrated the weave, but there was only one way to known for sure. Amaranie let her weave sink in to the stick, and a small smile appeared on her face as she saw that this time, the wood remained straight and had turned shiny, just as she'd seen earlier.

This was a relief, but Amaranie's smile disappeared quickly since she still needed intense concentration. The Fire and Earth she needed next were simple enough to use in the small amounts required, but again, the Air knot gave her trouble. The first ones she tied were all much too large, not fit to even be tried within the weave. The Accepted shook her head, squinting at her work, forcing herself to continue until she had something small enough to fit. She stared at it, then pushed it into its place in the middle. The Earth and Fire rings she'd made rotated around the Air knot easily, and Amaranie did not hesitate to press the whole weave into the ter'angreal. Tiring now, she quickly placed the last thread of Spirit, fighting Air again until she could produce one that matched the thickness of the Sprit, or near enough to it. With that done, she let saidar go, then looked at what she now held.

It might have begun as nothing more than a stick, but the object Amaranie had created now held the shine of glass, and appeared to be perfectly straight. Looking at the table where Elia Sedai's lay confirmed that her own work, if not an exact match, was very close. Another small smile was displayed as she passed the ter'angreal to Elia Sedai for her approval.

Elia
The Mistress of Novices took the offered ter'angreal into her good hand. There was little doubt that this attempt was far better than the last, as Elia had observed and felt the weaves lain upon and into the wood. The end result was close enough to the original ter'angreal that the differences only mattered to someone who cared passionately about such things. With no small amount of agony, she hovered her withered and blackened hand over the rod whilst weaving thin strands of Air and Spirit.

This was a much better outcome. Even if the first set of weaves had not come quickly or easily, the formation of the rod was precise and accurate. The admixture of the five powers within seemed to closely match that from the original, but Elia could sense a roughness within the object. Roughness wasn't quite the right word but Elia could think of no better. Perhaps there was a slight overlap within the rings of Earth and Fire, or some other slight misstep in the process. Again, it was a subtlety that only she would notice.

Lowering her damaged hand onto her lap, Elia raised the other one to hand the ter'angreal back to its creator. "As close to perfect as I would have hoped," Elia said with kindness. "I think you'll find you've created the ideal tool to make a colourful mess of any room." She hoped that Amaranie would never one foolish enough to use it for that purpose.

When Amaranie took the ter'angreal, Elia continued. "And trivial as it may seem, you used all five powers, and managed to recreate the original after two attempts. That is no small accomplishment."
