Bastian
Bastian tilted his head and looked more than a little confused, “A dish to cleanse the taste? I can’t even imagine the need, or that it would make such a difference.” Inwardly, he was beginning to understand why his father had little patience for the wealthy. . .they seemed spoiled and too soft for his taste. The idea of being able to blend in, or at least not look completely out of place seemed almost unattainable to the large huntsman.

At least he could take some comfort in knowing if he did have to serve food, the order of the courses would always be the same. He might not ever get how to set the table down with that many forks and spoons, but he could remember the order of the dishes.

Turning his attention back to his soup, Bastian had to adjust his grip on the spoon. This new grip he was using was awkward, and he nearly dropped his spoon. He managed to catch it before it hit the soup and made a mess. Furrowing his brows, he just stopped himself from making a frustrated grunt and finished his soup. He watched as both Beron and Andraste Sedai wiped their mouths with the corner of their napkins just as he brought the back of his hand up.

Looking from the Ji’val to the Aes Sedai, he cleared his throat as he followed their lead and used his napkin instead of the back of his hand. The other Ji’val seemed to be right at home relative to him, making him feel even more out of his depth.

Beron
“Will we be required to serve the food”

Beron paused as Andraste answered the question Bastian had asked. He had not thought when he had offered to dish them up, as one of the lower ranked in the room, Beron had just assumed the Aes Sedai would want to be served.

Her comments about travelling as nobles, or other useful disguises also made sense. Beron had wondered how the Green, Blue and Red Ajah’s acquired their information on the movement of enemies. Surely not everything was reported by eyes and ears alone. So choosing such a bondmate could require pretending to be a soldier, bored mercenary or even it seems a valet, Beron pondered, his mind realizing that the job of a Gaidin was far more expansive than he had originally considered.

Shaved ice was something else Beron had never heard of. Oh he was familiar enough with the ice kept by the Kitchens to help keep food cold, or to carve even on festivals; but he had yet to taste any. “The one ball I attended was a small event from the sounds of what you describe Andraste Sedai. Is the event you are planning to attend one with musicians and such as well?”

Andraste smiled and nodded. "It will be, yes," she said. "You both may be interested to know that we'll all be heading close to home for this little excursion. "We will be going to Kandor for a modest event at a merchant's house, but they are a family with which the Grey Tower is well acquainted and we want to keep that relationship friendly."

Of course, there was one very important detail she was leaving out...

This merchant family was hers.

It was her brother, that was. "It will be a four-course meal, followed by dancing. I do not expect there to actually be any trouble, but it will be a good way to put into practical use what we have been discussing today. "You will not need to use subterfuge nor leave where I am at, but your behavior will reflect upon the Tower."

Beron
Beron smiled when Andraste mentioned that the event would be taking them to Kandor. He had been worried it would be a dull Tairen ball, or some other event. But a merchant family he had some knowledge of their manners and expectations. He had traveled occasionally with his father and uncle when they sold the Ice Peppers, and as such had enjoyed a few meals with merchants.

“That is welcome news Andraste Sedai. It will be good to be in the
Borderlands again, even if they are no longer home. And Kandor was a country I did not get to visit as much as I would have liked,” Beron said pleasantly to Bastian as he recalled their ax lesson, and Bastian’s stories of his home.

A four course meal followed by dancing seemed like opportunity enough to step on the wrong foot, or say the wrong thing, but at least Beron knew the purpose for their visit. “I will have to brush off my dancing shoes, Andraste Sedai. I have not danced since arriving at the Grey Tower, and I only knew the reels soldiers and their ilk dance.”

“Of course I will remember that my actions reflect on the Grey Tower, and how well we listen to your teaching,” This would be one of Beron’s first missions as a Ji’val and it would give him a taste of some of the other duties expected of Gaidin.

"You may be surprised to find that a few dances among these occasions can be quite lively and even resemble such reels," she said easily, since she knew that while her family was upper class, they did enjoy a bit of a fun. She had no doubt that this large dinner party would present just such an opportunity.

She moved on, though stayed within the topic. "However, there will be a situation during this event that will be just as likely for you to encounter, should your future bond-mate need to attend these events: how to protect your channeler while they are on the dance floor with someone else."

Bastian
Dancing.

Why did it have to be dancing?

Bastian grew up in a cabin in the woods of Kandor. He’d never seen his mother and father danced, and while he’d seen people dance in inns and taverns, it was never something he’d learned to do. Pushing himself from his seat, Bastian grabbed his soup bowl, and then that of the Red Sister and the other Ji’val, “Is dancing a requirement, Andraste Sedai?”

Moving to the sideboard, he set the bowls on an empty tray and then served salad to both Andraste and Beron before serving his own. Taking his seat, he watched, noting what fork each of the others grabbed to make sure he got it right. He then looked to the plate of greens with other vegetables. Salad wasn’t something he ate often as life in the cabin generally meant meat and root vegetables more than other, more exotic (at least to Bastian) veggies.

The Ji’val almost tucked into the salad when he saw Beron pass Andraste what looked like oil and vinegar. After she poured her dressing, Beron followed suit before handing the condiment to Bastian. He took the bottle and did the same, but wasn’t expecting the dressing to pour out as quickly as it did. He very nearly panicked but managed not to drown his greens in oil and vinegar, and also looked between Beron and Andraste, wondering if either had seen his fumble.

Beron

Dancing. And protecting an Aes Sedai when she was twirling within reach of anyone else on the floor sounded like a nightmare to Beron. The press of bodies and the distractions.

Lost in thought, Beron was surprised when Bastian stood to clear the bowls. Nodding his thanks, he listened as Andraste Sedai and Bastian spoke about the upcoming event as well.

Seeing the salads and spotting the dressing on a small serving set, Beron grabbed it and passed it around to the other diners. As he saw Andraste preparing, he copied her movements and noticed that Bastian was more lost in conversation, and so kind of sloshed the oil onto the greens.

Still Beron would not embarrass anyone, and after he had blurted out questions and comments, Beron could empathize with feeling like a fish out of water.

As they ate, Beron thought of another question. Placing his fork down, he waited for a pause in Andraste’s eating. Her eyes met his after a moment, and she gestured for him to speak. “I was going to ask, is there another Sister attending? Just with two of us, I wondered. Or is that one of the ways you mentioned about protecting even when forced to be seperated?”

Andraste thought she detected a hint of anxiety in Bastian's question, and she suppressed her smile, even if it was sympathetic. She simply sat in her chair, straight but still somehow casual, while the Ji'val took care of the soup bowls and brought out the plates of salad. It was simple fare, but enjoyable.

"Dancing is less a requirement for the warders than it can be for the channelers," she explained. "As the Aes Sedai, or Asha'man, are the ones there as the primary guests, they are often obligated to join the revelry at least in some small degree. You as the warder will not generally suffer that same obligation."

She hoped that it put his mind at ease, although she couldn't help but imagine that a handsome man like him would be lacking in those wishing to dance with him. "However, if you wish to be prepared for anything, I would be willing to teach you a few steps," she offered, waving to them both. "Either of you."

They ate for a little while longer and then Beron had his own question. "No, it will just be me," she replied. "The reason there are two of you, in this occasion, is simply more efficient teaching. However, there are channelers who bond more than one warder. This is generally the Greens, because of their predicaliction for running headfirst into battle, but others can as well.

"It would behoove you to use this as practice for working as a small unit, should you bond someone would has or comes to have another warder."

Beron
“Thank you Andraste Sedai, I would any lessons you would be willing to share,” Beron replies as he distractedly pushed the food around his salad plate. The food was good, but he was enjoying the conversation more and he found himself thinking about the possibilities that Andraste’s words pointed too. The idea of escorting an Aes Sedai to banquets had never crossed his mind, although he laughed inwardly when he tried to picture Isla with more than one Warder.

"It would behoove you to use this as practice for working as a small unit, should you bond someone would has or comes to have another warder," she suggested and Beron nodded his agreement. “That makes sense. If we did that for this event, Bastian can help me cover where I am weaker. If we help keep each other steady, we’ll make a good showing.”

Beron realized it was his turn to serve, and so with that in mind Beron stood and collected the salad plates. Once they were cleared, he grabbed the covered plates, and placed one in front of each of them. Sitting back down he removed the cover and saw a chicken, artfully quartered and standing on vegetables and rice. It looked amazing and smelled of spices and a sauce he was unfamiliar with. Still as the others began to eat, he shrugged and joined in.

Bastian
Bastian was glad the others hadn’t seemed to notice his fumble with the dressing and listened to both Andraste and Beron. He was surprised the Aes Sedai offered to teach he and Beron how to dance. Part of him was also relieved by her offer. Giving her a small, uncertain smile, Bastian nodded, “I would appreciate the help with dancing, Andraste Sedai. I’ve never had reason to learn to dance.”

The idea of working as a unit was easier to grasp than the concept of dancing. He had to agree with Beron that they could help each other make the best of the night. Exactly how the pair woudl do that, Bastian wasn’t entirely certain. He suspected the how wouldn’t become entirely clear until the night in question came up.

“All this begs the question. . .when will we be traveling? If you intend to teach me to dance, I can’t imagine we’d be leaving right away?”
