A Day Out [Attn: Alrim]

Post by Bella » November 6th, 2021, 1:42 pm

Sadira was first to the stables that afternoon, having come directly there from a class she was teaching that released earlier than Alrim's training schedule in the Yards had apparently allowed him. She didn't mind that, though, since she had naturally inherited her mother's appreciation for horses and enjoyed spending a little extra time with her own. The grooms and stable-hands did a good job caring for all the animals kept here, but she was glad for a chance to take care of her own horse for a bit.

She was just working out a particularly troublesome knot in Dazar's mane when she felt the bond begin to grow and smiled to herself, knowing that he was headed her way.

Today wasn't any particular occasion, of course, but after having been particularly busy with classes and training, as well as the recent extended watch over her littlest half-brother while her mother and Haeden went off on their...family business, it was a chance for Alrim and Sadi to just get out of the Tower and have a little time together with no other purpose than that. A ride in the country, with the brisk autumnal weather setting in, seemed like just the thing.

Life had been busy, far too busy as far as he was concerned. It wasn’t that he didn’t see the seriousness of making sure the Learning Ranks were able to not cut their own hands off in the process of protecting their future Bondmates, or in defence of the Tower and its holdings. No, he had seen enough and been involved in enough to know it was an imperative responsibility. Yet between the daily duties, the caring for other loved ones and the various minutiae of the Tower and its workings it had left little time for that which was most precious.

Too little time…when was the last time we just…were? he wondered to himself, flicking one of his bells from his face, sending it back around to nestle with the rest, for the time being.

He fiddled with the handle of his sword absently as he teased and pulled at the Bond, heading in that direction and every so often taking a left or right, feeling it grown closer as he went. Even that was something that he had not done in some time, feel out his Rose just for the fun of it. She was usually there, tucked away. At times it was impossible not to feel her, life had not exactly been simple – if their lives ever were – and emotions rose despite the ability to control. But what with one thing and another…he stopped for a moment and sighed at his foolishness. No, he needed to try harder, that much he was sure of.

He continued his pacing, her presence growing closer and larger until he was behind her, having plucked one of the last flowers left along the way, it was blue and so had seemed appropriate, presenting it over her shoulder.

“There were no stalls along the way,” he said with a flicker of amusement, “are we going into battle? Following a lead perhaps? Wait…do we actually have some time for something other than Tower business for once?” he asked, only mildly teasing.

Sadi obviously knew the moment he drew close and she smiled as she felt it, although she didn't turn to face him yet. The flower "magically" appeared over her shoulder and she took it in her hand, smiling at its hue and taking a moment to close her eyes, inhale the fragrance, before she glanced back at him with a coy smile and quiet giggle that no one but Alrim was every allowed to hear or see.

"We actually have the afternoon all to ourselves," she said with an almost-mischievous lilt in her tone as she lifted her eyebrows slightly. "The Wheel has finally woven in our favor and we are going out for a ride. I'll hear nothing of business nor teaching nor training nor anyone but you asking me any sort of question for the next several hours. Assuming you're amenable, of course?" She gave that Jolstraer crooked, teasing smile.

“Are you sure?” he asked with a teasing tone, “we could always go back and see if they need us? No? Good, because I have missed the quiet moments, they should be enjoyed between the inevitable cataclysms”

It was very true, he liked swinging swords and traini his shouldeng the Drin as much as any Gaidin did, but he was quite aware that even in his short time at the Tower there had been many a dark moment. One of the strongest lights that broke up such times was Sadira and when they were otherwise engaged the brief moments were to be cherished as priceless. He smiled back at her, enjoying her fragrance as she enjoyed the flowers, placing a soft kiss upon her forehead and holding her close for a few moments.

“Funny how the Tower, and certain people in it, made a decently responsible man of me. Still, sometimes it’s fun to be a little rebellious and do your own thing, our own thing…even if it is Tower approved, we can pretend” he chuckled, the wind causing a few tingles of bells.

He let her go after a small squeeze and made his way to his own mount, making sure all was well with it and prepared, saddled and the rest. He pulled himself into the saddle of his mount, stroking its neck as an old friend, they were indeed. Despite the relaxed plan for the day he still made sure his weapons were in place and his Fancloak sat right before settling in with a grin.

“Besides, we always seem to find our own fun. Adventure awaits, no?” he said, pulling alongside her as she set a gentle pace out of the Tower and towards wherever they felt like going – a strange feeling, to be free. He would have to make more time for such things, that much was certain.

After a while of travelling the Tower was beginning to shrink behind them, not overly so but enough that its ever present aura weakened and vanished, his muscles relaxing slightly if not entirely. Though he kept an alert gaze upon their surroundings he could feel the loosening of Sadira and felt sure he must be sensed that same. The wind in their hair, the rhythm of the hooves, the sanctuary of their own company, alone. The corners of his lips began to curl upwards and his gaze softened.

“I think they have missed us,” he noted, “I can feel the pulling to go faster and get some true exercise. Perhaps we should let them, we might end up in a different city with no tasks to complete”

Sadi laughed richly. "I was beginning to think that such a place did not exist!" While she realized her words were hyperbole, she knew that the feeling was sincere. It often seemed to be just one thing after another--one duty, one favor, one obligation. To get a moment free of them seemed to require a battle of its own, though it hadn't really been that difficult.

"I'm happy to let them have their heads and see where we end up," she replied, casing a sidelong glance at him. "Maybe there is a town out there that does not hold too much adventure to it. Shall we?"

He nodded and could feel the enjoyment across the Bond as their mounts took charge, let loose to run to their hearts desire. It was adorable in a way, watching the landscape pass by with laughter and abandon, feeling the horses start to breathe more deeply as they tested just how far they would be allowed to push themselves in their quest to chase the horizon. The path wasn’t a bad one, kept well enough and clearly travelled frequently enough that it had no overgrowth that would be a potential risk – a trade route most likely given that the Tower had many connections.

So, they let them have their fill, offering no restraint upon their speed though still guiding them when required to make sure they stayed upon the path. It was a long while before they even slowed, let alone were truly able to be pulled back and into a more manageable rhythm. He wasn’t surprised as settlements came and passed, they clustered near to more secure locations such as the Tower, though they were more villages than anything else – at least the first two were – as they slowed their mounts so as to be no danger, before letting them loose once more once upon the other side.

“They cluster more of late,” he said between the beat of hooves, “newer places founded closer to places of safety. Makes me wonder if they know something we don’t” he said, frowning slightly at the horizon.

A few moments later a larger settlement came into view, wooden walls and rough-hewn stone mashed together and easily visible even from their current distance. He smiled at Sadira, her prediction manifesting itself as it usually did, she had far more knowledge of the lands than he did, he admired that about her. As well as the fact she tried to help where she could. Many times they had visited somewhere he had no clue existed to provide aid, for various issues. He had learned, with time, that trusting her was not just what he wanted, but was the wisest choice. As they approached, he saw nothing that screamed out as problems, though. The walls were still whole, though worn, and the gates were open for travellers.

Crossing its threshold there were friendly faces, if busied about their business, and the sounds of market hawkers plying their wares. Trades passed them by along the main through fare, their own blacksmith catching his eye as signalling a productive and reasonably wealthy town worth taking note of for future outings and possible trade…as well as threats. His gaze flicked this way and that, detecting nothing of the Shadow that was obvious and his shoulders relaxed slightly, though his hand still rested upon the hilt of his sword, ready just in case.

“Seems a nice enough place, have you been here before? I can’t say as I remember it myself” he asked her, his gaze flicking to her and holding hers for a moment before returning to his protective watchfulness.

Being upon a horse was as natural to Sadira as walking upon her own two feet, when all was said and done. With the mother and father she had been born to, it was inevitable that the daughter of a Saldaean horse farmer and a Sheinaran cavalryman would be so. She could have closed her eyes and still known the horse's moves, trusted the animal to not run itself off a cliff or into a tree.

It wouldn't have stopped the horse from getting them to some unknown place, but there'd have been an equal chance of ending up back at the Tower! Horses could be that way too.

As it was, they approached a reasonably sized city although one that looked like it's construction was perhaps a bit... Her steel-blue eyes took everything in close. Rushed, perhaps? It was not quite as clean and smooth as other villages and towns within a ride of the Grey Tower, but it didn't look terribly haphazard either.

"I don't believe I have," she answered Alrim as they rode into town. She took it all in without seeming too...Aes Sedai, basically. She did not carry the haughty look of that reputation unless it would serve her. More often, it did not. "I'm guessing these constructions are not terribly old, as constructions go."
