The Ji’val watched as the Asha’man put the halter on Markus and then the lead rope. She then stepped backwards and moved across the aisle to give Derren and the horse plenty of room. Markus was more pony than horse, not that he looked ‘small’ to Paks. The horse plodded along behind Derren, looking less than interested in what was going on.
When prompted, Paks moved alongside Derren, noticing how the horse’s eyes were set and realizing why Derren suggested she approach from the side. She was perhaps a step away from the Asha’man and did her best to be relaxed. It amazed her how at ease he was given the weight difference and how much damage Markus could do if he desired. She kicked herself for being so tense, wishing (again, not for the first time) she could reach for the Void.
‘Want to stay calm, cool and collected in front of the Asha’man?’ Jesi teased.
‘Too late for that, I’m afraid,’ Paks replied with a small smile.
The vision of her lover smirked, ‘Well. . .he’s getting you to smile. I’m surprised it’s him and not that red-headed Yellow.’
Paks pushed the distracting thought out of her mind and turned her attention back to Derren. She took a centering breath, “Ok, so now what?”
And thus began the first of what would become many lessons between Paks and the Grey Asha’man on all things equestrian.
