Black is the New White...Cloak (Open)

Varrick Dale, Reluctant Soldier
Another lap of the Tower grounds, another missed opportunity to walk out the gate. Varrick would walk out next time though, absolutely. He just needed a bit more time to think. Light, what would his parents think? He could remember the Inquisitor frowning down at him. Confess. Confess to what? Had it been the game of dice? Varrick still didn’t think so.

And now he was here. Wearing a black coat and surrounded by men and women who could Channel the One Power. The place was crawling with them. Varrick shuddered. Crawling with people like him. He hadn't believed them at first, of course. Spark? Resonance? What a load of rubbish...and then he'd felt it. Saidin. The male side of the One Power that had caused the Breaking of the World. No matter how much they tried to tell him that the "taint" was "gone," Varrick knew better. He'd been raised in the Light and he knew how much the Dark One must be laughing to see this Grey Tower.

But if he left, he'd die. That's what they'd told him. Worse - if he wasn't properly taught, he might Channel by accident, endangering those around him. Did he believe them? He honestly wasn't sure...but he knew if he returned to Amadicia, his life could well be forfeit anyway. A deserter from the Children and a Channeler. The combination wasn't exactly the gold standard for Living in Amador Happily Ever After.

Varrick passed the gate again. One of the guards had been looking at him funny. That sort of thing could put a man off and it simply wouldn't do. Just one more lap. Then he'd approach from a different angle so it all seemed deliberate. Like he was running some errand for someone important. Yes, that would work. One more lap and he'd walk right on out.

Passing too close to a doorway, he bumped into someone. "I'm running an errand." He said loudly and not at all in a panic. "It's very important."

Avalan Mond'wil
Taking the horse from the Aes Sedai, Avalan took it to the stable to brush it down and feed it. As she worked, she ran her mind over the sword lesson she'd had earlier that day. She ran the names of the stances she'd learned over in her head. She rather liked learning the sword and the discipline it required. Unarmed combat was still much more her style, but sword forms were proving to be enjoyable.

As she worked, her feet began to move beneath her. She moved into The Creeper Embraces the Oak as she circled the horse, which then became The Falling Leaf as she moved the brush across the horse's body. Then, she moved into The Wind Blows Over the Wall, her brush moving up, then sliding along the horse's back. She smiled to herself, then continued brushing the horse normally. She liked working with the horses, but she'd never ridden one. Back home she'd just walked everywhere, or ridden a wagon for longer distances, and here she hadn't had the time. Hmm, maybe she'd have to rectify that.

She finished the brushing, then moved him to his stable and put out his feed and checked his water. She gave the horse, Rahien, a final pat, then turned to leave the stables. She didn't get very far as she slammed into someone passing by. She gave a grunt. Instead of a similar noise from the other person, she heard, "I'm running an errand. It's very important." She quirked an eyebrow and took a step back. He was not much taller than her and looked to be close to her in age. He wore the black coat of a Soldier, and she guessed that he might be new as she didn't recall ever seeing him before.

"Sorry, Soldier. I didn't see you there." Her golden eyes studied him, noting that he smelled skittish. "On an errand for an Aes Sedai or Asha'man, are you? Few other things make us learning ranks run like that," she said dryly.
