Dianlinn looked over as the large man blew his whistle in a shrill shriek, and she watched as Sarkaska Gaidin hopped over the wooden trestles that barred the students from inadvertently fetching arrows too soon, and tossed a few short-fallen shots back at the girl whose alley he stood in. “Now, you’ve each shot a bow about fifty times. Toward the last ten to fifteen shots for each of you, I’ve noticed that most of you have begun trying to aim: that is, rather than blindly loading and firing, as I instructed you, you looked toward the target,” Sarkaska thumped an archery butt with a few arrows bristling out of it, “and tried to hit it. Some of you had some rather amazing beginner’s luck, but that will soon peter out. What you need to develop before that happens,” Sarkaska said, lifting, fitting, and firing his bow in a single motion, “is skill.” Dianlinn nodded her head as she listened to him, knowing what he spoke of. Most of her arrows were on her target somewhere, though it had taken a while to get used to the bow in her hands.

“More precisely, skill in aiming.” The Gaidin's voice called out, cutting through Dianlinn's thoughts as she looked at her target feeling a moment of pride.

“The first step in aiming is to embrace the Oneness, ko’di: whatever you call it, be it the Flame and Void or what have you.” There were near as many names for the empty state as there were Nations of the Wetlands, every one having a different way of thinking about it. The Aiel did not have a name for it, it was just a focus that came from dancing the spears, and the fact that they did not fear the coming of death.

“From within the Oneness, turn your focus to the target. You might need to turn the lathe of the bow parallel to the target, even lay it flat,” the Gaidin said, demonstrating, “but at some point, you will find you can stare down the arrow to its estimated landing area. As you practice aiming, you will find this state comes faster and faster.” He shot off three more arrows, all three making a neat triangle within a finger’s width of one another.

“I want you to recover your arrows, assume the Oneness, and aim each shot at the archery butt. Wait until you hear my whistle before recovering shots that did not make the target. Re-fire those. You may break for lunch after all of your arrows are in the target.”

Dianlinn waited for his whistle before moving down the range, though when she did she did so quickly and with a purpose. She collected her arrows, and all of the girls, Athilin's, too. She gave the girl back her arrows without a word, before placing her own in a quiver and waiting for the Gaidin's whistle to start firing her arrows once again. She drew in a breath, held it, wrapped herself in the expectation of death, and as she released the arrow she breathed out slowly. This one hit the outer ring once again, and she reached for another arrow without looking down, and set it against her bow before she was breathing in and letting another one fly.

Athilin Mansarn
As the Gaidin talked, she remembered how the militia near her home had taught people how to use bows. It was very smiliar to how the Giadin was teaching now. She listened to his tips and tricks to be able to shoot properly and she took it all in. She moved to collect her arrows once they were allowed when she was suddenly presented with a bundle of her own arrows. Her brown eyes showed surprise but she took her arrows with a smile. "Thank you Dianlinn." She said as she slipped her arrows into her quiver.

She faced the same target as last time with Dianlinn next to her, before she drew an arrow and set it against the arrow rest of her bow. She tilted it to the side, adjusted how she held the string and drew the bow back, breathing in deep, pulling her bow up just a little bit and let the arrow loose. It flew, hitting the target. A small smile graced her lips as she adjusted her stance for comforts sake, and then she drew her bow string back with another arrow on it, before she let it loose as well. Out of the fifty she shot, only three didn't land into the archery butt, but nothing was even close to the center. She waited for the call for them to gather the spent arrows before she dashed out to get them, collected her last three and moved back to her firing spot.

The wind blew but she didn't feel it as she closed herself into the start of the Oneness. She pictured the archery butt and where she wanted the arrow to land. She focused in on the target before she loosed her arrow and it sailed. Before it landed, she already had another flying, and then the third one flying as well. All three landed, with almost uncanny precision into the center ring of the archery butt. She waited for Dianlinn to finished before she lightly tapped the other woman on the shoulder, excited to share her success with the Aiel woman.

When the teacher, in his gruff voice called time on the arrows once again, Dianlinn was about t move to collect her own, when the girl next to her, Athilin, seemed to be collecting hers. Dianlinn stood by the mark, and when the girl came back to her with the bundle of arrows, she nodded her head to her. "Thank you, Athilin, you are very kind." The words probably sounded alien coming out of her mouth, and indeed they were strange to say. She had not seen much kindness in the Wetlands, and they had the audacity to call the People of the Dragon savages.

She looked up as the Gaidin began to speak, her hands feeling out her quiver and sliding her arrows in. She felt each one too, searching for any imperfections. That was how she had been trained. "Right, as it seems most of you would at least do more damage to an enemy than yourselves, I am finished with you for the day." And with that he waved his hands, picking a couple of those who had been talking while he had been, and made them tidy the area up.

Dianlinn unstrung her bow, and slid it into her quiver, coiling the string up into her belt pouch. She looked to Athilin and nodded her head. "Thank you once more, may hap I shall you around the Tower." She bowed her head to the girl, she was to be an Aes Sedai after all, and that meant she would be owed respect and her fealty. Without another word, after all words were wind when they were not needed, she turned and began to head back to the Tower. She would need to have a quick lunch as she had been volunteered to help with the removal of some old items into the basements.
