New Life, New Home, New Friends(?) [Attn: Bella/Haeden]

Bastian Vass
Bastian Vass tugged at the collar of his tunic and jacket as he made his way out of the Warder Hall and into the Warder Yards. He’d arrived two days earlier in the company of Miahala Sedai and Ravak Darrow Gaidin and Master of Arms for the Grey Tower. On arrival, they’d taken him to the Infirmary where an Asha’man about his size and with a voice just as deep and gravely took him in and gave him a once over, then insisted he spend the night, getting a good night’s rest, along with several solid meals. Bastian wasn’t going to argue about free food.

With his cabin destroyed, Bastian had a choice to either rebuild and continue with life as he knew it, or take a wholly different path. His father had been a military man, teaching him how to handle two axes, a skill that saved his life with the bandits so bent on making his home their own, and destroying it in the process.

Ravak and Miahala told him of the Grey Tower, and an option he wouldn’t have considered had the Wheel not seen to it that their paths cross. With nothing tying him to Kandor, he decided to follow them to the Grey Tower and see whether he could make something of himself as part of the Warder Yards. The day after their arrival, Ravak escorted him to see the Mistress of Training, one Riahana Tomosan Gaidin.

Bastian couldn’t help but notice how much the female Gaidin looked similar to Miahala Sedai, wondering if they might be related, though he said nothing at the time. Instead, he signed his name, and was then taken to the Quartermaster where he was given his uniforms. Finally, he was shown to the room he’d share with another Drin, and told he had 2 days to adjust to his life in the Tower before he began training in earnest.

Two days was not enough time to get used to the uniform, or the collar of his shirt and jacket around his neck. The boots were also odd, but they were mostly comfortable. He just couldn’t help tugging on his sleeves and collar as he walked. He had one more free day before he’d truly start down the path to become a Gaidin.

Walking through the Yards, he came to an area where several people were watching a man and woman spar without weapons. The woman seemed to be getting the best of the man, and no one seemed surprised by this. Bastian was simply because most women he’d met had no affinity to fight. The woman in the ring seemed more than capable. “I’m not sure I’d want to meet her in a dark alley.”

"You wouldn't."

The voice came from a man who was standing just beside the other man. They were not far off in height from one another, nor in breadth though the rough-looking man in the Drin uniform was slightly bigger through the body than the other--but not by much. However, where one was fairly dark, the other was fairly light, with blond hair and green eyes.

Said man looked at the new arrival with a sidelong look and partial smirk. "She could probably meet two or three of you in a dark alley, or a light one, and emerge the victor. Don't ever underestimate Malina Gaidin."

Bastian Vass
A slow grin found its way to the huntsman-turned-Drin’s lips as he turned to look at the man who answered him, “I don’t doubt it. She is. . .impressive.” Just as he looked back, the female Gaidin managed to use the larger man’s size and momentum against him. There was a loud thud as the man landed flat on his back, eyes wide in surprise.

A split second later, Malina was straddled on top of him, a smirk very clear on her lips, “Do you yield, Dolan?”

“Light, woman. I yield,” he sounded breathless.

Malina tapped his nose with a finger before pushing herself to her feet and offering him a hand up, “You are getting better, Dol, but you are too confident that your size will see you through.” She looked at those standing around watching, “Let it be a lesson to you all. . .for the right fighter, your size will not matter. I’ll see you next week, Dol. Keep practicing.”

People began to disperse, and Bastian looked to the man who’d spoken to him a moment earlier, “It seems I will have a great deal to learn while I am here, and what little I know about wielding my axes will not get me very far.” The corner of his mouth lifted in a half-smile before he held his hand out, “I’m Bastian Vass. I arrived the day before yesterday, and I’m still trying to find my way around this place.”

The "I'm new around here" air was very strong around this one. Haeden had taught enough classes, mentored enough new Drin, and just seen enough passing of new people in and onward to recognize the look. He returned the small smile and took the offered hand. "Welcome to the Tower," he said. "I'm Haeden Ives Gaidin. And I arrived here, oh, the day I was born."

A flash of humor glimmered in his eyes before the blond turned and gestured for the Drin to walk with him. "How are you finding the place so far? I know it's a lot to take in when you're new to it."

Bastian
Bastian gave a slight shrug as he looked around, “So far so good, I suppose. It’s a lot busier than what I’m used to, but I like the change of pace.” He smiled wryly, “Mind you, I haven’t properly started training or chores or anything. Ask me the same question in one week, and I may have a different answer for you.”

The Drin looked off to his right at what he learned was a Ji’Val in the middle of a sword spar with a Gaidin. The Gaidin moved with a grace that seemed unnatural, and seemed to move out of the way of the Ji’Val’s sword without any great effort. The Ji’Val overextended herself, and the Gaidin took advantage, letting his practice lathe land a slashing blow across her thigh.

Bastian doubted he’d ever be able to move with the same kind of grace he saw in the Gaidin. He was told he could continue to work with his axes, but he’d have to take a class in unarmed combat. Any other weapons classes were up to him. What was not up to him were classes in history, politics and tactics. None of those sounded particularly interesting.

“So you got here the day you were born. . .I’m guessing that means your parents were already at the Tower?” he asked as he matched Haeden’s pace while taking in his surroundings.

Haeden didn't push the conversation in moments when it quieted, since he could see the other man looking around and trying to take everything in. And there was certainly plenty to be taken in. Sometimes, it was easy for Haeden to forget that since he had been immersed in it along with his first breaths.

When the Drin's attention came back to him, he smiled slightly. "Correct," he said. "My mother is an Aes Sedai and my father was a Gaidin, and as you can see, I followed in his footsteps."

Which, considering his rage toward his father, was still a surprise some thirty years later.

"I have a half-sister who is an Aes Sedai as well, and a few other kin running around." Haeden chuckled. "My mother's lineage is...extensive, so you will run into them during your time here." He paused, glancing sidelong at the man as they walked. "So, Bastian, what brought you to the Tower?"

Bastian
Bastian didn’t miss that Haeden said his father was a Gaidin. Had the man retired? Do Gaidin retire? The huntsman didn’t think it proper to ask Haeden to clarify, but tucked that bit of information away for another day. What he couldn’t do was hide his surprise when the Gaidin spoke of not just a mother and father of the Tower, but a half sister and other kin as well. It sounded as if his mother had something akin to a Tower Dynasty.

He gave a bit of a shrug to Haeden’s question as the pair continued to walk, “I lived a quiet, simple life in Kandor. . .in the woods, as some like to say. Some cut-throat types thought my cabin would make an ideal base and thought to see me dead so it could be theirs. Unexpected help came my way in the form of the Master of Arms and his imposing Aes Sedai wife.

“Unfortunately, by the time they came to my aid, my cabin was completely engulfed in flames. I could have rebuilt, but Miahala Sedai and Master Darrow suggested I accompany them here and see what the Warder Yards were like. They thought I might be a good addition,” Bastian explained.

“Without another obvious option in front of me, I decided to take a chance, and so here I am,” he said.

As soon as the words "Master of Arms" and "Aes Sedai wife" were out of the Drin's mouth, Haeden footfalls came to a stop. It took the other man a moment to realize and turn back to the blond Gaidin, but once he did, he found the older man laughing and shaking his head. He shouldn't have been surprised.

"That bloody woman really is everywhere," he said with mirth. He turned his green eyes to meet the Drin's gaze. "Miahala Sedai is my mother. Ravak Darrow is, of course, not my father. My father died nigh on thirty years ago, although he too was the Master of Arms for the Tower in his time."

Bastian
Bastian couldn’t help but look confused as he turned back to find Haeden laughing, but confusion gave way to understanding the moment Haeden explained. Both of his brows shot up, “That woman is your mother?” And the man’s father was a former Master of Arms. “I know the Tower doesn’t have royalty, per se, but I can’t help but feel as if I walk with Tower royalty.”

After a second or two, his lips twitched in a smirk, giving away his jest, though he was only partly joking. “I hope I didn’t offend when I described your mother as imposing. She is the first Aes Sedai I’ve ever met, and if I were honest, I’d say the first I’ve ever seen. There’s an air about her that. . .well, formidable and imposing are the best words I can come up with. Did he dare admit he found those traits admirable?

To her son? No. Perhaps not.

“I imagine growing up at the Tower is about as different from my life as one could get. Do you have any suggestions for a brand new Drin? What to do, what not to do? How to stay out of trouble, or at least not get caught getting into trouble?” He couldn’t stop himself from giving a goofy grin as he asked the last question.

"Imposing is almost always the first word anyone speaks when they describe my mother," Haeden said with a smile to show that it didn't bother him in the least. He had grown up in the shadow of the woman, after all. He gestured for them to start walking again.

Ah, the question of advice. "You know it's not my place to avoid you doing things that would get you into trouble," he said with some amusement still in his green eyes. "Do as you're told and follow the rules, and you'll avoid trouble just fine. However, if you want to avoid getting caught, well...just be smart and vigilant."

Haeden waved a hand as they walked. "Advice... Pay attention to everything, and learn all that you can. Your time here will seem long while you are training, but once you're in the world, protecting a channeler, you'll wonder if it wasn't long enough."
