A Meeting in the Yards (Attn: Andy)

Post by Gale » April 23rd, 2017, 2:02 pm

Daliner walked towards the training grounds. It had been some time since he had practised with the sword. It had been some time by his usual standards, in other words less than a week. But for somebody who had held a sword every day for twenty five years this was a long time and he was beginning to feel the need to fight again.

Channelling was all very good and interesting but fighting was in his blood. It was what he was good at. He still felt the urge to use a sword and he doubted that he would ever get over that. This was one of the few times since he had came to the Tower where he had had enough free time to come down and train. The classes and chores kept the Novices and Soldiers busy almost the whole day and what time they did have free was usually filled working through the homework they had been given during their classes. For once though he had gotten little homework and none of it due imminently so he had decided to come down to the yard and see if he could find some quiet place to train for a while.

He knew that he wouldn't be able to go for a long time. His injury wouldn't let him but he would be fine for an hour. Much longer and he would begin to feel it thought. It was a case of being careful and not pushing himself to far unless he was able to.

Saw your character was Ji'val hence why I made the post the way it is. If you don't want to fight then they can just talk to do something else if you have ideas.

"Know a man by the name of Daliner Alrim?" Gaidin Thomosa almost growled at him in amusement.

"Heard the name, seen him a bit. What do you ask Gaidin?"

"Heard he wants someone to see how good he is with one of those little stickers you two use"

"Swords, much better than axes. Wait...why are you telling me?"

"Time to put your training to use lad!" came the barked response and a toothy grin, "go see what he's made of. You're Ji now, time to start leading others!"

There had been a few more words after that but they had been inconsequential banter really, the Gaidin was just having a word with him. He had noticed that had happened more of late, since he had been raised. It was like he had joined a small club but wasn't really a full member yet. The meetings were few and far between, short and usually consisted of giving him a job to do. As it was he had been scheduled to practise the blade so it was not that much of a change this time.

So it was with a curious feeling that he entered the Yards and sought the man out, it took some time but he eventually spied him and approached softly, slowly. He took the time to circle him a bit, he was already at work with a lathe and it proved useful to observe before teaching he had found. Had taken him a while to figure a teaching method but one was starting to coalesce over time. He hefted his own lathe and rolled his wrists as he awaited the right moment. It came soon enough, the man going to pivot and slash - his lathe blocked by Alrim's, the vibrations rippling down his arm dully.

"If I were an enemy you'd be dead," he grinned and adopted a cheerful tone, "Daliner right? Alrim Farshera, or Bells if you like. Hear you're a man who knows the sword some," he set his lathe across his shoulder and extended his other hand to the Soldier in greeting, "been sent to see how good you are, make sure you've got the right training program....very boring things, I know. But they says jump and I say, well I just mutter behind their back.

"Tell you what, talking and saying 'this is the pointy end don't stab yourself with it' is pretty boring and if you were that dumb you'd be in the Infirmary already. Moving on to the next point of order...try to hit me," he winked and stepped back, relaxing his muscles and letting the ko'di - still unreliable but more often than not worked for him - settle in, "hard as you like. I don't mind bruises"

He didn't adopt a defensive stance yet, he wanted to see how the man went at it, besides which he was light on his feet and would mostly go for dodging at first, perhaps swatting aside the lathe that came too close. He was more interested in footwork and balance and that didn't need the click clack of wood that gave headaches to all. Just quick feet, circling and maybe a trip or two.

Daliner sized the man up. He was slightly shorter than he was with a marginally shorter reach. He was younger though and the edge of speed and youth would probably balance out any reach advantage Daliner had gained.

"Well nice to meet you Alrim." Daliner said as he study the man. Daliner fell into The Lead Floating on the Breeze. His sword horizontal in front of him. It was a standard form taught to young fighters due its ability to both attack and defend. In his case he was ready to attack with the blade of the training sword moving side to side, ready to move.

He let himself enter into the Void. It was familiar and yet alien in a way that was impossible to explain. He had been taught it as a Companion but had only master it as a Soldier. Before when he had entered the Void it had been empty, now the glow of Saidin rested in the Void. It took effort not to reach out and embrace it. It was nearly instinctive now to reach out and take hold of it.

Beyond the fact that if he embraced the source now he would get in so much trouble for it from the Asha'men, even if he didn't weave anything. There was also no point in it. He was here to duel, not to channel. If he channelled this fight would be over. Even with his limited knowledge he could kill an opponent in several ways. It really wasn't difficult when you though about it. A few flows of Air around the body to hold it and another one just under the head. Give that one a hard pull up and you would rip the opponent head of. Not a nice way to go but effective none the less.

Instead of channelling he struck with Lightning of Three Prongs. A fast thrust straight for the ribs which quickly became two slashes the first to the left and the second to the right. They were a test for the man and he doubted that either would hit him. He was a trainee Warder and he had no doubt that he was at he very least equal to Daliner, if not even better than him.

It was always fun to see how good people were when they stepped into the Yards. For all of the stuck up pompousness of many channellers it was often the case that they were terrible at actual fighting. Give them a wall to burn down they'd have no problem, give them a blade and they'd stab themselves with it. Alrim was pleasantly surprised at the man's proficiency as he flowed into the fight without much hesitation. He stepped aside and batted the attacks away, seeking to circle the man to test his footwork.

"Come on now, you can do better than that" he grinned as he kept up the dancing.

It was good practise he knew, to just learn to dodge and deflect. Few seemed to fully appreciate that fact, instead opting to focus upon attacking and subduing an enemy before they could muster up a counter attack. Alrim had found that it required far less energy to let the other fighter do all the work and tire themselves out. Usually they got frustrated and made an error in anger too but that was just an added bonus.

"Better, better, still no hit though" he added as Daliner kept up an assault.

He was still quite happy with the man though, he clearly knew how to use a blade and use it well. He was perhaps as good as he was, perhaps slightly rusty in places but still competent. He kept up his dodging for a little while longer before deciding that it was time to test another thing - defensive positioning. Would Daliner be able to defend, shift directions and still maintain the forms he clearly knew?

He can follow his enemy well enough, true, but a real fight is different he told himself within the ko'di as he switched tactics suddenly, blocking an attack and wrapping his blade to flow into a thrust to push the man back.

He followed that up with a series of attacks of varying angles, directions and towards differing locations of the body. He was familiar with the idea of a full defensive ability but few really managed to learn it properly. It was largely where most people's weaknesses were found. His own included he had to admit, despite attempts to expunge them. As he went about his attacks he went about trying to circle Daliner, to open up an attack to his back. If the man was proficient enough he would avoid this blatant tactic.
