Feeling Pressure (attn: Open)

Post by Jon » May 2nd, 2019, 4:59 pm

Laoise The sunlight streaming through the open windows cast pattern patches of light upon the tiled walkway of the Novice Quarters in the Grey Tower. Laoise walked from light to light, taking a brief glance out of each window as she walked. Her return to the Tower after a second season at one of the many farms where the Grey Tower sent initiates had been rather uneventful, save for one change. Lee now had decided that she would do whatever it took to become an Accepted and to gain the shawl of an Aes Sedai. She was done with her hesitation at becoming Aes Sedai. This was what the Wheel weaved for her, so she decided to accept it. She surrendered. In surrender, she found power. Lee now felt like she truly understood how Aes Sedai embraced Saidar.

In this decision that she had made, so many things had changed. For one, she felt more at peace with her place at the Grey Tower, which translated to a calmer demeanor and a readiness to learn. Another major change came in her channeling. Having come to the Tower, she had blocked herself, so channeling had always been difficult. She broke her block upon returning from the Farm the first time, but she still wasn’t at peace with her channeling. Her fear was still very strong, so her channeling had suffered. However, now that she was at peace, threads of Air, Water, and Spirit seemed to leap into her hands as she wove. The ever-difficult threads of Fire and Earth had become more biddable, though she doubted she would ever have the facility with those two powers that she did with with other three. Her strength in the power had grown too, much like it did with every woman, and she could handle more of the One Power than she had when she first arrived at the Grey Tower. In all, she was finally growing and thriving and not just in her ability with weaves.

It began a couple of days prior to the day on which she found herself peeking out the window with every other step. A new sensation appeared in her mind. It felt like a building of pressure, but there was not pain. That pressure grew and grew until she was certain that she would burst if it did not burst first. That had been the night of the most violent thunderstorm the Tower had experienced this year. The thunder shook the stone in the Novice Quarters, and the lightning lit her windowless room, streaks of light peeking under the door yet filling the whole room with light. She spent the storm huddled on her bed, eyes staring out into the night. The pressure had gone, leaving behind a sense of certainty. Lee knew it was raining. Moreover, she knew it was storming, and she had a guess at when the storm would stop, which it did. And she knew of it.

This isolated incident occupied Lee’s mind as she walked. She’d listened in lectures about different Talents. She knew that some women who channeled could predict the weather. If unfound by the Tower, these women became village healers, what one would call a Wisdom or a Wise Woman in the area around Hama Valon. Was that all she could do? Lee wanted to know more, but she knew that her learning would only increase based on what the Sisters thought she was ready for. To push was not the way of a Novice. She had to surrender. For now, the weather outside and inside her head were clear; she felt no pressure that indicated a coming storm. Still, she felt a different pressure inside, a storm of uncertainty. Who would she be? What could she do? The questions hung in the air like clouds, growing heavy with the promise of her potential. But unlike the thunderstorm days before, Lee couldn’t tell yet when these clouds would break.
