Things that Go Bump in the Night (Attn Callum)

Amaranie
Amaranie slowly closed the door to her room behind her, not wanting to wake Haxia who had for once appeared to be sleeping peacefully. The novice yawned, then started off down the hall, hoping the nightmare she'd just had would fade away. It had been the Accepted again, bursting into flame right before her own eyes. Her death had haunted Amaranie's dreams most nights since it had happened, and the novice couldn't help wondering if she would have lived if she'd spoken up about the Amyrlin sooner. She sighed, dropping her eyes to the tiles beneath her feet as she continued to walk, trying to focus on something, anything, else. All she wanted was to forget the nightmare enough to return to her room and at least lay in her bed, though Amaranie did not think she would sleep again this night.

Her long legs enabled her to walk quickly, and she wasn't paying much attention to where exactly she was going. This wasn't the first time she'd left her room after curfew when she couldn't sleep, and by now Amaranie knew her way around. Without meaning to, she found herself moving closer to one of the walls. She didn't notice how close she was until she struck her foot against it, pitched forward, and fell, catching herself with her hands. A loud thump echoed down the hallway, and Amaranie looked up, nervously searching the halls. She'd never been caught wandering before, and had no desire to be, but the noise had been quite loud and she was afraid she'd woken someone up. For the moment, it did not appear that she had, and Amaranie pushed herself off the floor and straightened up, intending to continue her walk, and hopefully avoid anyone she might have managed to wake.

Kylin rounded a corner and saw a Novice pushing herself to her feet. It explained the bang at least. It had been quite loud. Truth be told he had just about jumped out of his skin. He had walked these corridors at night many times since his arrival at the Tower but he have never seen or heard another soul. He was glad of that fact if he was honest. Meeting someone would have required him to explain why he was out wandering the corridors. If it were a Novice or Soldier he met then that wouldn’t be much of a problem but if it were an Asha’man or Aes Sedai then he would be in deep trouble. Breaking curfew was a serious offence and his reason for it wasn’t even close to good enough. Going for a walk because it helped you think was not that good a reason.

He was extremely greatful that it was a Novice and not a full rank. He walked towards the girl slowly, unsure quite what to do. In the end he just stuck out his hand.

“Hello, I’m Kylin.” It was all he could think of to say. He had never been good with people. He much preferred books. Books were simply enough to understand. People had so many layers to them. It was impossible to truely understand them and that annoyed him. He didn’t like not knowing things.

Amaranie
Amaranie didn't get further than a couple more steps before she saw a man coming around a corner. For one moment, she feared that the noise she'd made had drawn the attention of a lurking Asha'man, but as he came closer, she realized that the man was only a Soldier, and should not have been awake and in the halls anymore than she should. So what is he doing up? She'd never before encountered anyone else in the halls at night, but lately, more of her classmates than usual had been complaining about being unable to sleep, and Amaranie suspected that was due to the horrible death so many of them had witnessed. She supposed she shouldn't be entirely surprised to find someone else walking the halls, when she considered that.

The novice wanted to turn and escape back the way she'd come, but before she had the chance, the man was standing in front of her with a hand extended. Amaranie didn't really feel like conversing with a total stranger in the middle of the night, but she couldn't bring herself to be so rude as to ignore him and walk away. Instead, she took the offered hand, shook it once, and let go. "I'm Amaranie," she whispered, not wanting to wake anyone who was sleeping in the nearby rooms. She turned her head, scanning the hall around them for anyone else before asking, just as quietly, "You couldn't sleep either?"

He studied the girl carefully even as he withdrew his hand. The first word that sprung to mind was unremarkable. She had one of those faces that could pass easily through a crowd. She was tall for a women he noted.

“Sort of. I’ve never been much of a sleeper. I used to just read but their only so much reading I can do when I can’t go to the library to get more books.” He said softly. “I find walking helps me think as well as passing time.”

He listened carefully to make sure there was no one else around. He had been nearby when he heard the thud but it has been loud. It might have drawn the attention of someone in one of the nearby rooms if someone was coming then he wanted to be out of here, and quickly. Getting extra chores was not something he wanted and he doubted Amaranie would want them either.

“We might wanted to move away from here before someone comes to find out what caused that bang?” He suggested softly.

Amaranie
Amaranie was still considering whether or not to turn back and head for her rooms, but something made her hesitate. She'd left Haxia asleep for once and she didn't want to wake her friend by returning so soon. She nodded to the blonde man, then turned her head to look down both of the hallways they could turn into, considering which would be a better option for a quick escape. When she'd decided, Amaranie waved a hand vaguely to her left. "We should head that way," she told him. "It's closer to where we should be, if anyone does come." She hadn't heard steps, nor seen anyone, so Amaranie thought they should be safe, but the novice didn't want to take any chance at being caught out after curfew.

Having decided where she would go, Amaranie began to walk again, picking up her speed so that she could quickly put space between herself and the spot where she had fallen. She didn't bother to look behind her to see if Kylin was coming. If he did, that was fine, but if not Amaranie was quite used to roaming the halls alone. In fact, the novice had to admit to herself that she rather preferred it, especially when she was trying to get a nightmare like the one she'd just had out of her head.

Kylin followed the girl without too much effort. Was tall for a Cairhenin which equated to about average in the rest of the world. Even so this was enough to let him keep up with Amaranie. As he followed he began planning what to say next. He wasn’t the most social of people but this girl seemed to like company even less than him. It was rare for him to find himself in a situation where he had to be the social one.

Eventually he decided on an innocent question. He felt he might as well try and stimulate conversation, if he couldn’t he would just return to his room.

“How long have you been here?” He asked softly as they walked. He didn’t risk speaking any louder, for fear of attracting the attention of anyone who might be near by. If it were just a Novice or Soldier then that wouldn’t be much of a problem but if an Accepted or Dedicated heard them then trouble would follow quickly.

Before coming to the Tower he had never had to be so careful about what he did. He rarely saw his family and so long as he wasn’t openly rude to the them they usually didn’t mind what he did or said. But here there were just to many rules and regulations, so many thijmd that could be done and so many that couldn’t be done. He knew things became a bit more lax as you climbed the ranks but even knowing that it would end eventually, this lack of freedom chaffed at him.

Amaranie

Amaranie was walking quickly, but the soldier still managed to catch up with her, leaving her with no choice but to be as polite as she could be when she did not especially wish for company. She shrugged at his question, searching her brain for the number of years that had passed since she'd come here. Three? Or is it four, now? She could never remember for sure. "I think....four, now," she said, though it was hard to believe she'd already been here for so long.

"And you?" she asked, attempting to engage him in the same sort of conversation she might have held with customers in what seemed like an entirely different life. "Have you been here long?" Amaranie didn't think he had. She'd been here long enough to at least recognize many of the other learning ranks, but Kylin was completely unfamiliar to her. If he was as prone to wandering the halls at night as she was, Amaranie was quite certain she would have run into him before if he'd been here for more than a short time.

She slowed down slightly as they reached the sanctuary of the halls that held the novice rooms. Here, if she was seen, she could always claim that she had just been returning to her room. The man beside her didn't have that excuse, but a look around her told Amaranie that the area was empty of anyone else other than the two of them, and it should be safe enough for both of them to be out of their rooms as long as they didn't stray too far.
