From Barracks to Prison Cell [Attn: Novice Nyaine Lintelle]

Post by Bella » July 1st, 2017, 8:18 pm

[subtitle]Novice Isla Arkema[/subtitle]
After having met with the Mistress of Novices, Isla's fate was sealed. She had signed the book and was officially a Novice of the Grey Tower, may the Light save her soul. After leaving that room, another...Accepted had escorted her to a room where she was given underthings, a night shift, and several plain white dresses in her size.

There was also a fresh set of a sheets for the bed she would be sleeping in, all stacked neatly in a pile of cloth she had to use both arms to carry.

She was led to the Novices and Soldiers hall, and felt like she was being led to her execution. Of course, this wasn't as bad as when her own brothers had turned on her and... No, Isla, do not think of that. She followed sedately and then into the room. She saw the two beds and sighed. "I will have a roommate?"

"Aye," the Accepted replied. "You may meet her soon. Free hour is about to come up." With that, she left.

Isla hadn't actually slept in the soldiers' barracks, being the daughter of the commander and a woman, but she would rather have that than this. However, it wasn't like she had any choice now. This was her life.

Novice Nyaine Lintelle Returning from a history lecture that was both incredibly boring, because it’s focus had been Cairhien, and infuriating because the teacher, some irritating Accepted that Nyaine didn’t bother with remembering the name beyond her notes on the lesson, had refused to accept that Nyaine knew better about the subject than she, having been tutored on Cairhienin noble houses almost since birth, Nyaine stormed into her room and then stopped, rooted to the doorstep. There was another girl in her room.

“And who might you be?”, Nyaine asked, giving her a thorough muster. She was taller, no surprise there, the hair a few shades lighter than her own. She also looked fit. Without the power, she would probably be able to overwhelm her quite handily, and she could not yet fully rely on saidar in any circumstance. Maybe it was better to re-think her approach. She put up her index finger.

“Wait, don’t tell me”, she demanded and expanded her investigation. A number of Novice dresses and other respective garments, still neatly piled, meant she was a new Novice, that much was obvious. But what was she doing in her room? And then the copper dropped. She hazily remembered the Mistress of Novices telling her something about sharing her quarters when she herself had been signed into the book.

“This already felt like a servant’s room”, she grumbled quietly into her non-existent beard and then forced herself to stop scowling, lowering her arm. It was certainly not her opposite number’s fault that she was here with her, no that belonged squarely with the Grey Tower. And who knew, from what she had learned so far, even the Tower had reasonable ideas that benefited its learning ranks every once in a while.

“I am Nyaine”, she said simply, still slightly irritated at having to introduce herself and imagining that nobody here cared about her House anymore, “I gather we are going to share the room, thus that brings us full circle to my initial question of who you are.”

Now genuinely interested, she smiled earnestly and she hoped encouragingly at the other woman.

When the door opened, Isla nearly startled...but she was too tired and dispirited to be too surprised. The Accepted had, after all, told her that her new roommate was likely to show up soon, and the former Whitecloak could make the easy assumption that that was exactly who this young woman was.

Isla's blue eyes took her in for a few moments, hearing the demand in the question but then seeing the slight shift of her mood. Isla couldn't identify just what each shift was, but she knew there was some.

There was something...almost familiar about the woman. No, not that the Tower's newest Novice thought she recognized her, not that sort of familiar, but something in her bearing that was reminiscent. Isla of course didn't say anything about that, just kept her gaze on the other girl until the question was repeated, this time with a smile.

"My name is Isla Arkema," she replied. This girl was also learning to use the One Power. It was...so strange. Just a month ago, she would have pulled a sword on her. Now, she was going to live with her. She felt like she had to choose every word and expression with care, and not reveal any of her past thoughts or feelings.

"I am, as you can see--" She gestured to the stack of fabric. "--quite newly arrived and placed here. It is good to meet you, Nyaine."

Nyaine “So I see”, Nyaine replied, sitting down primly on her own bed, “welcome, then, to the Tower, Isla. It is nice to meet you, too.”

She smiled again and thought about what to say next. Obviously, she wanted to know more about the other woman than her name. Placing her accent had proved to be ineffective for Nyaine, but she was rather certain it wasn’t Cairhienin or Andoran and she also did not have the sound of a borderlander. That, however, still left quite a number of possible origins.

“You must be excited for your first lesson”, she commented as if talking about the weather, “I know I was. After they told me I could channel, I couldn’t wait to start learning. I didn’t mind travelling before, really, but the way from Cairhien felt like the longest travel I’ve ever done. It was, but still, I thought it would take forever…”

Nyaine trailed off and cocked her head at Isla inquisitively. There was a curious, yet familiar quality to her. It took the Cairhienin longer than she would have wanted to figure out what it was.

“Or maybe you’ve done it already?”, she asked, “Channelled, I mean. You were born with the spark, weren’t you? So was I.”

Isla had been very direct and honest with the Mistress of Novices about who her family was and who she had been before, but she was very uncertain about how much to tell others. She didn't like lying, and she didn't want to feel shame, but she knew that it would not be well received in this place...not by everyone.

She didn't know this girl at all. Well, now she knew her name, and that she was Cairheinin.

"Yes," she said. "I was...apparently born with the Spark." She licked her lips and tugged at the sleeves of her dress. It was still the unattractive, ill-fitting thing that she had come to the Tower in. She had not yet changed into this...Novice dress. "I cannot tell you how much for all the world I wish I hadn't been."

That last part had been almost to herself and she blinked when she realized what she'd said. She forced a small smile and hastened to explain, lest she offend the person she'd have to live with from now on. "It is just that my family was not...particularly accepting of channelers, so my being able to was an issue. I guess you did not have a similar issue?"

Nyaine Nyaine only just managed not to stare at Isla in open disbelief. Nobody expected to be able to channel, of course. To do so would lead only to disappointment in more cases than not, but once you found out that you had been given that gift, resenting it was such a waste. Even worse for the family to not support their daughter, she thought. Yet one could not choose one’s upbringing and the values the family instilled would surely stick for at least a while.

“No, Aes Sedai are respected in Cairhien”, she replied after mulling over her own family’s reaction for a few moments, “so when two Aes Sedai of the Grey Tower discovered I could channel, I was quickly sent here. I think my mother was disappointed that she couldn’t marry me off to some lord’s heir and improve the House’s standing, but she has most likely realised by now that having an Aes Sedai in the family may do an even better job at that.”

The fresh-baked Novice had appeared reluctant to share information on her own origin. A family that did not accept channellers? That could be anywhere, but if she did not want to give the information now, Nyaine thought it would not be the best idea to poke and prod. Who knew, maybe she would have more trust after some time had passed and her disposition towards her ability had improved. Best to move on to more practical things instead. Her smile returned at the prospect of being able to impart some of the little knowledge she had of the Grey Tower.

“I have some chores I must attend to later”, she said with a grimace flickering over her face, “but there is some time yet. Do you have any questions or do you want me to show you around? Maybe the washroom first so you can change?”

"Yes," Isla said quickly, almost so quickly that she barely let the other girl get the question out entirely.

She was grateful when Nyaine did not press her on her origins, although she certainly couldn't imagine ever wanting to divulge the information. It was still just beyond her that she was here and a not-small part of her mind and heart were just waiting for the moment when she would wake up, and find this all a dream.

Once more would she be in the loving embrace of her father, with her brothers in the Light by her side and not with them having turned on her so brutally, and not here among those she had been so long taught to hate.

However, she was not awake yet. She was still disheveled and feeling awkward in the dress she wore. She was not eager to get into the Novice dress, but she knew it would at least fit in a slightly better way and would be clean, and if she could wash up some herself, that would be wonderful.

"Yes, please," she said after a moment, a little less obviously eager. "I would like to wash up and change, and then...I suppose knowing my way around would be good, if you'd...be so kind."

Nyaine Grinning at the very prompt reaction from Isla, Nyaine got up from her bed again, gave herself a quick look-over in the stand-mirror and turned to the newcomer, who it seemed did not want to talk about how she had gotten here with a passion.

“My pleasure. I, too, had someone show me around the Tower when I first arrived here. Passing the knowledge on is the only way to repay the favour”, she quoted one of her previous teachers.

“You will want to take your fresh clothes, a towel, soap…”, she listed matter-of-factly, “If they haven’t issued you some or all of that, you can have mine.”

Standing by the door, she waited for Isla to arrange and gather her things and then led her out into the corridor. As they were walking she picked up the conversation again, trying to at least somewhat sate her curiosity. “I hope you don’t mind me asking this: Will you be trying for the Accepted and the Shawl or do you just want to learn to control the ability and then leave again?”

It had occurred to her while waiting that it certainly could be an option for someone who did not appreciate or want the Creator’s gift to simply learn how to control it and not die from it. It was an option that would never be sufficient for Nyaine, but Nyaine had not been raised with values that opposed Aes Sedai. Additionally, not everyone had the same curiosity to learn and know about new and exciting things as she, the Cairhienin had realised after attending her first few balls and dinner parties. Some preferred to stay within the bounds of what they took for granted.

The stack of items from the Mistress of Novice and quartermaster provided all of those things that she needed, although she knew that she would not need them all right at that moment. While the other Novice waited, she sorted through it to find just what she needed immediately and then got up and followed.

This place had so many rooms and hallways and things to remember... Would she ever remember all of it?

Isla almost lost a step when the next question was asked, though. She did stop, in fact, and blinked at Nyaine. "That's...an option?" she asked, almost dumbfounded. "I had the impression that there wasn't any choice. You came here and eventually became Aes Sedai, assuming you don't die." To her mind, death was just as likely as the other.

Could she really just learn enough and then leave? But...where would she go? She could not go home.

Nyaine “So I have been told”, Nyaine replied, stopping herself a few steps further down the corridor than the reluctant Novice and turned around, “though not by the Mistress of Novices, now that I think about it…”

She trailed off, thinking about what she had taken for granted before. Would that not be something Tia Sedai would have told Isla if she seemed as troubled by the prospect of channelling as she was, at least to give her the prospect of a choice to make and not just bleak fatality of a fate to be endured?

“It is only sensible though”, she elaborated, “After all there are tests one has to undertake to be raised to both the Accepted and full sisterhood. I somehow doubt they would want to keep you a Novice forever. It is not really something I have concerned myself with too deeply, I must add, since it could never be an option for myself. I want to learn!”

It dawned on her, that she had possibly said too much. She probably should not have confronted Isla with her own dedication to become Aes Sedai now that she was here, but rather let her come to terms gently with others having less reluctance about saidar. Yet what was done was done and maybe some of her own enthusiasm would – eventually – rub off. Maybe that was one reason why the two of them now shared their room. Maybe it was pure coincidence. She did not really believe in a lot of coincidence around channellers anymore.
