A Night On the Town [Attn: Jesi/Marla]

Post by Roan » March 28th, 2017, 8:44 pm

Paks Liard
The Novice Quarters were more or less uncharted territory for Paks Liard. Her tendency in finding companions for the evening leaned towards those who either had their own private quarters (in the Tower, or elsewhere), or finding somewhere a bit more secluded. Meeting Jesi threw a bit of a spanner in the works, though Paks didn’t seem to mind. In fact, the added challenge made their rendezvous all the more tantalizing.

The hour was late, which meant no one aside from Paks was wandering around the halls of the Novice quarters. If she came across an Aes Sedai, or even the Mistress of Novices, she’d have some explaining to do, but she had no desire of getting caught, and every intention of sneaking out with Jesi in tow. Before long, she came to the right door, or what she hoped was the right door. She knocked lightly three times before opening the door and slipping in the room.

Paks knew Jesi had a roommate, and hoped her presence didn’t give the other Novice too much of a shock. She looked between the beds, flashed a smirk at the unfamiliar girl before turning her eternal smirk to the woman with the deadly grin. Wiggling her brows as she closed the distance between the two of them, she spoke barely above a whisper, “Still up for an adventure tonight?”

Jesi
Jesi shifted a little on the hard pad that passed for her bed, rubbing at her hip with a grimace. She would likely have bruises, albeit light ones, from her most recent appointment with the Mistress of Novices. Velanya’s patience wore thin rather quickly of late and the novice couldn’t help but wonder what the woman’s end goal was. If the Tower didn’t want the Mayener as a novice, why did they insist on bringing her back when she ran away?

Muttering to herself, she looked across the room at her new roommate. At this time of night, they should both have been asleep, yet Delaine lay with her nose buried in a book, reading by the faint flicker of a clandestine candle. And Jesi….well, even with the sting of her backside she could not quite contain her anticipation of the night ahead.

Thankfully someone knocked before Delaine could decide to ask questions, and entered without waiting for an invitation. Jesi flew up and met the Drin halfway across the small room. Waving cheerfully at her scandalized roommate, the Mayener wrapped her hand around Paks’ upper arm and led her into the hall. “Light yes,” she whispered in belated response. “I was beginning to think you wouldn’t make it.” She looked down at her dress with a grimace. “They’ll never let me out like this...tell me you have a plan?”

Paks Liard
The Drin’s smirk broadened as she slid an arm around Jesi’s waste and escorted both of them quickly (and quietly) down the hall. “I have a plan,” she whispered before planting a kiss on Jesi’s cheek. They couldn’t go out the main entrance, and while Paks wasn’t entirely familiar with the Novice quarters, she had enough ‘friends’ among the kitchen staff who were more than happy to tell her how to slip in and out unnoticed.

Before too long, Paks guided Jesi down a small corridor used by servants. After one or two more turns, the pair were in front of a small door. She held up a hand to ‘tell’ Jesi to wait as she opened it and looked both ways before ducking back in. The smirk was a full on grin as she took Jesi by the hand and led her out of the Novice quarters. They were ‘behind’ the building, conveniently hidden by a wall of shrubs. “You will draw too much notice in the banded dress,” she whispered as she stepped up close and then reached around Jesi. “I brought my spare pants and top….and swiped my roommate’s boots. I hope they fit,” she smirked as she wiggled her brows.

“And I promise I didn’t bring these just to watch you strip here and now. . .later, though,” Paks added before licking her lips and giving a wolfish grin. She turned around, but ‘looked’ over her shoulder to talk, “There’s a little tavern that I like to frequent and the barkeep owes me for entertaining his patrons. Figured we could go there, have a drink or two, a bite or two, and generally have a bit of fun before sneaking you back in?”

Jesi
The novice noted the path Paks took to get them out of the novice quarters with some interest, filing the information away for later. She had a few different ways of getting out, but most involved dumb luck, so this exit was certainly most welcome. Once outside, she took the bundle the Drin handed to her, nodding mute acceptance of her statement about the white dress.

“That seems like an excellent plan to me,” Jesi told her companion with a low laugh. She kicked off her slippers and pulled the breeches on beneath her skirts as she spoke. “Mienne Sedai has this glass bowl in the corridor outside her quarters. It’s utterly heinous and I swear it's large enough to sleep in; I have no idea why she keeps it. Anyway, today she found it full of water and small fish. They were happy enough, I don’t know why she had such a big issue with it, or why she immediately thought of me.” Even despite the fall out, she couldn’t stop herself from laughing. “Velanya Sedai made me eat bread and water for dinner and-” she had been undoing her buttons; now she cut off to pull her dress over her head, thankful for the interruption. “Anyway, I’m famished!” She snatched at the shirt and pulled it on, then tugged on the coat and boots. The footwear fit well enough so long as she didn’t have to run.

The Mayener put her hand on Paks’ shoulder. “I’m decent,” she said with a low laugh, her lips just brushing the woman’s ear. “Well, as decent as I can be. I’ve never worn breeches before, did you know?” Dark hair tumbled about wildly as she shook her head. “Let’s go before I chicken out.”

Paks Liard
The warmth of Jesi’s fingers on her shoulder would have sent a thrill through Paks, but it was overshadowed by her breath and the barest touch of her lips on the Drin’s ear. Biting her lip and rolling her eyes (not that Jesi could see), Paks gave a silent prayer for strength to make it off the Tower Grounds instead of finding their way to an empty classroom, or the Loft for . . .other activities. When she turned, her smirk was firmly in place, “Never worn breeches? I’d believe it. I’ve never worn a dress as an adult. When I was little, Father used to make me wear them, but I was hard on them and he had to replace one just about every week.

“He finally gave in and got me breeches, which I was just as hard on, though they were more durable than the dresses. I was more than a little grateful for the change,” Paks spoke as she offered Jesi her arm and started to lead them to one of the side gates. Tilting her head back to appreciate the. . .view, her smirk broadened, “And I have to say there is no reason for you to chicken out. The look works on you.” There was no way anything about her look or what she said didn’t come across as wolfish, but in her mind, Jesi started it by whispering in her ear.

Navigating their way off the grounds wasn’t that hard given Paks’ propensity for spending evenings in Hama Valon. She didn’t always go through the main gates if she could help it. The Master of Training didn’t need to know she went out almost every night (though he likely did). Before long the pair were walking the streets of Hama Valon, “There’s an inn just far enough from the Tower that it doesn’t see many of our peers. The barkeep knows me, has good cheap ale, and his wife cooks a mean stew.”

The Drin stopped and turned so she was facing Jesi. She held the other woman’s gaze for a three count before sliding her hand to the back of Jesi’s neck and pulling her in for a kiss. It wasn’t a peck, but nor was it overly indulgent, but when their lips parted, Paks found herself breathless. With a soft laugh, she admitted, “I’ve been looking forward to doing that since the moment I woke up this morning.” She wiggled her brows before taking Jesi by the hand and leading the way to the tavern.

Jesi
Jesi listened to the Drin’s story of her father and breeches with dancing eyes. In her mind she tried to imagine a child-sized Paks struggling with skirts and the image was so silly that she laughed despite herself. They traded stories as they walked through Hama Valon, each more ridiculous to the last, until finally Paks stopped and looked back at the novice with an expression in her eye that Jesi had come to know quite well.

Her chin tilted up and she took a half step forward in response, fingers sliding over Paks’ chest, up the sides of her neck, then slipping into her hair as their mouths met. Jesi had been surprised to find she took the lead in their relationship in many ways, but in this area she gladly gave her control over without a murmur of complaint. She softened, relaxed, her body molding to fit against her lover’s as if they had been made for one another, her lips eager, yet also soft and tender. As far as she was concerned, they could stand there and do that all night and she would be satisfied.

When they separated Paks wasn’t the only one breathless and weak-kneed. Jesi sucked hard on the inside of her lower lip, grateful for the steadying presence of the other woman’s hand. “One kiss is worth a thousand penances,” she said playfully, lifting Paks’ hand to kiss her knuckles as they walked. Her companion stumbled over nothing at the touch and Jesi tossed her head back, laughing heartily.

They reached the tavern shortly after, music and laughter spilling out into the street as they approached. Jesi’s step picked up; by the time they ducked inside she was half-dancing already. “What did you do to entertain the patrons?” She asked curiously as they waited to order their drinks. "Do you play an instrument? Other than my heart strings, that is," she added with a wink.

Paks Liard
Light, Paks, what have you gotten yourself into? she thought after she nearly tripped. Since when does a lass have this much of an impact on you? The Drin knew Jesi was trouble, but the good kind of trouble. . .the kind of trouble she had no intention of avoiding. How could she when a woman made her feelas light on her feet as Jesi did?

The Barkeep came up and winked at Paks, “Table’s free. Go on and have a seat and I’ll bring you a bottle of mead and two mugs.”

“Thank you, Doyle,” Paks answered, her smirk firmly in place. She then started to guide Jesi to the table in question, “I don’t play an instrument. I tended to tell stories or sing. . .usually the more rowdy songs. There are the odd ballads I would sing depending on the crowd. The group of misfits I performed with tended to try and get people to laugh and forget their troubles, but reading a crowd is important. Sometimes, crowds don’t want cheering up.

“You may have noticed I’m not one of a serious nature, but I had to learn to adapt when we were with a more somber audience,” she explained as she held out Jesi’s chair for her before taking her own seat.

The smirk broadened a bit, “Hearing I play your heart strings is music to my ears, I must admit, Jesi.”

Before the Novice had a chance to reply, a woman approached the table, setting down a bottle and two glasses, leaning over Paks as she did so, “Tis good to see you again, Paks. Think we might be able to. . .scamper off later?”

Well now this was slightly awkward. The smirk didn’t falter as Paks looked from Jesi to the server, “Not tonight, Analise, besides I’ve heard you’re engaged to Joxer.”

The woman kept her back to Jesi, something that did not go unnoticed by Paks, “Joxer ain’t here, and you are.”

Paks nodded towards Jesi, “I am here, and here with Jesi for the evening. You should go home to your man tonight, Analise.” The server looked to Jesi and back to Paks with a frown before turning on her heel and walking away. Paks looked to Jesi with a more sheepish smirk, “I’m sorry about Analise. She’s. . .well, she was a mistake.” She couldn’t help the soft, awkward laugh.

Jesi
Jesi glanced around the tavern with proprietary curiosity. Years of working in such establishments gave her more information than the standard patron. That door led to the kitchen and cellar, while that one went to the stables. The corridor would go to private rooms for dining and eating and perhaps to the innkeeper’s family quarters as well. The familiar scent of sour beer and burning meat washed over her and she relaxed.

Paks kept up a flow of commentary until they settled at a table. She had just made a flirtatious comment about heart strings when a stranger appeared out of nowhere with their drinks, blatantly ignoring Jesi’s existence as she spoke to Paks. At first the novice simply thought her rude, but then she heard what the maid was saying. Ah.

The Mayener reached around the blonde woman’s elbow and grabbed the jug, pouring their drinks with practiced grace. Then she settled back against the wall, an amused smile playing across her face as she watched their exchange. When Analise finally accepted rejection and walked away, Jesi emitted a low whistle of appreciation.

“With hips like that I’m surprised she was just one mistake,” she quipped, describing exaggerated curves in the air with her hands. Then she winked and pushed one of the mugs toward Paks. “Stick around me long enough and we’ll run into a mistake or two of my own, I’m sure.”

She chuckled and took a drink herself before continuing. “Tell me. Why did a heart-breaking tumbler decide to train to be a Warder? I've wondered what you're doing for a while, but never really had the chance to ask.”

Paks Liard
The Drin gladly took the mug and took a long pull from it, though she nearly sprayed her companion when Jesi asked how she came to be a Drin. It was bad enough that Analise seemed so insistent, but to tell the story of her more or less literally landing at the feet of the Master of Training. Managing to swallow the sickly sweet mead, Paks let go a soft laugh, “You’ve not heard the tale of how I landed in the Yards?”

She tilted her head, “Not even through rumors and gossip?”

Jesi shrugged, and Paks laughed softly once more before taking another, longer pull from her mug. “Well. . .the story of me signing the roster of the Grey Tower Warder Yards is a tale that could be told by the best bards of the land, and they wouldn’t get it right for not having lived it. It is a comedy mixed with tragedy mixed with more comedy. I dare say you might think that much less of me once you’ve heard the tale. Are you sure you want to know?” All of this was said with a slight, though not over the top, dramatic flare of one used to spinning tales.

“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t want to know,” Jesi replied, matching Paks smirk for smirk.

Paks sat back in her chair, setting both hands on the table as she held Jesi’s gaze, “Very well. When my father decided I was not worthy to be his apprentice, I decided to forge my own path, and left home for adventure. You may think I went right to the Tower, but you would be mistaken.

“You see, I came across a group of traveling musicians and storytellers. They weren’t exactly Gleemen, but they would travel Mayene, going from town to village to hamlet, and earn their keep entertaining patrons at inns. Often trading their skills to entertain for room and board and not much more, but sometimes. . .sometimes the Dark One’s Luck would shine on them and they’d find themselves a well paying contract to tide them over for a time. It was on one of these that our paths crossed, as they were the entertainment for the winter months at an inn in a village I happened upon.

“What coin I had was quickly dwindling, and I found this band of rogues to be fun and entertaining, and they figured I was as well, as they asked me to join their numbers. It is through them I learned to spin a tale, or sing a song or two, and it is through them that I got into more trouble as an adult than I care to admit, though I regret none of it,” she paused to take a sip of her drink and flashed Jesi a smirk.

“Over the next couple of years, I learned their ways. They were a harmless lot, for the most part, though one or two might pick a pocket here and there. . .they never asked me to do such dirty deeds, as it never sat well with me,” Paks confessed. “You may or may not be aware that such traveling troupes sometimes attract. . .admirers. Some of those admirers were quite forward, and I learned being a part of the troupe could mean sharing the bed of some lass or the occasional lad

“It became a bit of a game, at times, and one I was apparently quite good at,” Paks admitted, realizing she was revealing a great deal more about herself than she intended. “We found ourselves in a village working for the one inn in the place. It just so happened a magistrate was there with his young wife. I do not lie when I say he could have been her father. He paid no attention to her, except when it suited him, and it rarely suited him,” she continued.

Paks let go a soft laugh as she paused to take another sip of her mead, “The wife was gorgeous, and I couldn’t help myself. I flirted with her as we entertained, and that flirtation carried over when we might both be in the common room and her husband was elsewhere. One thing led to another, and I found myself in her bed. Unfortunately, so did the Magistrate, well. . .sort of. He found us taking a bath together.”

The Drin laughed softly, “I launched myself from the bath, and through the nearby window. I streaked across town to the nearby woods. Some of my troupe had been outside and seen all this unfold, and very nearly died of laughter. The Magistrate did not find it nearly so humorous and put a price on my head. There’d been thefts in the area, and I think he intended to pin them on me.

“I was not deterred, though, and returned to their room when I knew he was out, but I was dressed as an old woman. No one could recognize me for who I was, not even her until I kissed her. She pulled me to her room without a second thought. Sadly, the Magistrate no longer trusted his wife and I was caught in his little trap,” she said with a shrug. “I was brought to trial and given a choice. I could go to jail or I could go to the Tower. When I was told what the Warder Yards were about, I picked jail, figuring I’d be a free woman faster. . . he decided jail was too good for me and sent me here.

“So here I am, and here I stay until I earn the bloody fancloak, or die trying. If I leave, or get tossed and step foot in Mayene, I will be sent directly to jail. . .if caught,” she said before taking in and letting go a deep breath. “And that is my story. I . . .am a rogue. Loveable, but still a rogue,” she finished with a smirk before she drained the rest of her mug. “Think less of me yet?”
