Residing in a Dream (Fanfic)

Post by Leala » September 21st, 2015, 2:21 am

Leala found herself sitting on her bed in her quarters, but her quarters in her family's manor in Andor. She could have sworn she had been asleep before this. This had happened before, as well. She was conscious of being asleep and dreaming, but instead of waking her up, she would stay in this place for a time before she woke up again. These feelings were always fleeting. She would realize that she was in this other state, but only for a split second. Determined, this time, she forced herself to remain calm and collected. She would find out what this was about.

This didn't really feel like a dream, though. Sighing, she moved herself to the edge of the bed and raised her eyebrows as the bedclothes fixed themselves, as if she had never been on the bed. It wasn't even that they moved, either. They just simply looked as though they had been that way. She didn't even remember them changing. They were simply neat now. Her room was almost exactly as it had it had been when she left as well. A few of her books had been put away for appearances, but most of her personal effects were still there. Walking in front of her mirror, she saw that she was wearing her favored dress: a gray dress with gold embroidery and dark blue accents. House Gymorraine's colors. What had she been wearing before? As she watched, a pin of enameled metal appeared over her left breast, two rose buds in the same colors, crossed at the stems. She had not completed her training yet, but she already knew what her personal symbol would be when she returned to House Gymorraine's lands: an open rose bloom with a stark white Flame of Tar Valon in the middle, blue and gold leaves seen from the sides. She knew that announcing her association with the Grey Tower in her sigil was not a popular choice among Aes Sedai and Asha'man in nobility, few as they were, but she saw it as a similar thing to wearing the shawl and the pins outside of the Tower. They were stamps that plainly announced the Grey, White, and Black Towers respectively anyway. Her personal seal would be just another way of telling the world that the Grey Tower was a part of her.

Blinking, Leala watched as the pin changed shape to what she had imagined. Not only that, but the gray in her dress changed to white, and a white shawl draped itself across her shoulders. A sudden jolt of fear gripped her, and the shawl disappeared. Even in a dream, she would likely be punished if it was even thought that she was impersonating a sister. Something was definitely strange here. She knew for a fact that she was asleep in her rooms in the Grey Tower. Otherwise, why would she know that her room looked a little emptier than it did? She had dedicated herself to talents and abilities a little less than she likely should have. If only she had an Indigo here, she could ask. How could she get back to the Grey Tower from here, though? Looking back at her appearance, her favored dress had changed to include the stripes of an Accepted's dress. Concentrating a bit more, she willed her dress to be an Accepted's dress truly. She was not Aes Sedai yet.

If this place changed your state of dress from thought...what about your--

Turning her head, she saw a woman who was not her standing in front of her, gazing into the mirror. She had bright red hair and was primping, combing her hair. She seemed to notice Leala and straightened up, a look of fear, then outrage taking over her face. The other woman turned to Leala and opened her mouth to challenge her, then disappeared.

Leala was absolutely certain that she had heard about something like this in the Grey Tower. Taking in a breath, she concentrated on her rooms in the Grey Tower, and she tried not to be too astonished as the world ran, then flew past her, as she was transported to her quarters in the Grey Tower.

Checking in her much smaller mirror, she made sure that she was in the appropriate attire, straightened her skirts, likely uselessly, and walked out of her rooms. Without a mentor, she would need to be careful. Her training, and really her own personality, had stopped her from showing her amazement from...well, this entire excursion. She was a bit shaken up. She would need a nice, peaceful walk to desensitize herself to this.

Suddenly, she remembered the name of this place in the Common Tongue. The World of the Dreaming. That meant, it was called...what was it...?

As she walked the Tower, she found herself unconsciously heading to the Library. Maybe the name of this place was in the a book there. Light, what is that name? She walked through the eerily silent Gardens. Here, things were a bit more active, but still, people flicked in and out. It seemed as though she were the only one who stayed in this place for very long. What was the name of this place...? It starts with a T...right? The Gardens faded away as she walked toward the Library. The doors did not swing open as much as they were simply open after having not been open. She strode through the doors and the familiar layout of the Library cleared her mind and helped her focus, but still the proper name of this place was just on the tip of her tongue. Walking past the stations of the Browns that were empty now, but tidy, she began to search for the section on research about the One Power. No, that wasn't it. The World of the Dreaming did not have anything to do with the One Power. Did it? One did not have to be able to channel in order to enter it, if she remembered correctly.

Leala stopped when she saw an Aes Sedai with her back turned to her. She wore an indigo shawl and seemed to be flipping through a book. Suddenly, she remembered a class that she had had with an Asha'man of that Ajah. The name of this place was --

Silver eyes shot open, and Leala found herself in her rooms in the Grey Tower again, this time outside of a dream, the name of the World of the Dream on her tongue: "Tel'aran'rhiod." Now she would have somewhere to start. First, though, she needed to make some notes and write out some theories she had of the place before she went back to sleep.

Embracing Saidar, she lit a candle on her desk and dragged herself out of bed. She wrote notes on what had happened, and then her conclusions at the bottom. Her mind was still yearning for sleep, so when she finished, she went back to bed and tried to sleep. As she drifted off, she remembered that class where she had heard the name Tel'aranrhiod. The teacher had been adamant that entering it unguided was not a good idea, especially if one's emotions manifested strongly. Leala calmed coaxed herself into a state where she no longer cared, and finally went to sleep.

The next morning, Leala rose and changed into her dress a little faster than usual. After she deemed herself presentable, she sat down at her desk and looked at her notes. It seemed her sleep-addled brain had coded her notes. They were sparse to the point that she had to strain to remember what happened.

Woke in rooms - home.
Bed became made - no memory.
Dress was own - not issued.
Pin appeared - my sigil.
Ajah stripes appeared - not Accepted dress.
Amended dress - now issue.
Woman appeared. Seemed to think room was hers. Vanished in seconds.
Transported to the Grey Tower by thought.
Awoke in reality after remembering name in Old Tongue: Tel'aran'rhiod.

Conclusions -

Manipulate appearance.
Locations and objects reflect reality.
Travel by thought.
People flicker in and out. Not certain why.

Well, perhaps that last one wasn't a conclusion. After reading it another time, she fleshed out her notes with details. She added what she had remembered, that this other world could be dangerous, if one's mind ran wild with emotion. Could one channel in this place? What made it dangerous with the right emotions? She would need to learn these things and many more before she could venture out much more. She would need to find an Indigo that she knew could enter the World of the Dreaming. A guide would likely be ideal. She couldn't remember if the Asha'man teaching the class had said if anyone had died while in that place. If it was dangerous, that was very likely. Yes, she would need to be careful.

Standing, she added a trip to the Library to her mental schedule. Leala was a normal fixture there now, but she would need to remember her purpose there today. Her life could very well depend on it.
