Bird of Paradise {Attn: Bella/Andra)

Alliterative Asha'man
It wasn’t yet noon and the city was already a live with the sounds of revelry. Alric toyed with his simple mask as he watched the gathering crowds from his window. Ebou Dari in elaborate costumes thronged the streets and the smells of a hundred different dishes filled the air. Even at the height of winter, many of the revelers wore revealing costumes. He’d have to remember to point some of them out to Andra. She would enjoy looking, even if she had chose a more reserved costume for herself.

A distant boom and crackle told them that somebody in the city was letting off night flowers. Some eager partier couldn’t wait till sundown. A cheer went up anyway and Alric grinned. “Looks like the party’s already going at full force,” he observed, eager to join the festivities. He stood bare chested, clad only in tight black britches and his carefully shined boots. The rest of his costume lay in a feathered heap on their bed. He buckled on his sword belt and paused before reaching for the cape. “Do you want me to help you with your buttons, Dear?” he asked, experimenting with the sweet name.

It wasn't normally the sort of festival she would have sought out on her own. Masquerade parties could be fun, but the feathers and the bird thing... Well, it wasn't really her thing. When she first was told of it, she thought she would have to wear an actual bird costume and commented that she'd rather go naked.

This, as one could imagine, caused something of a reaction.

Once she was later assured, however, that she could vary the number of feathery adornments, she agreed more easily. She had chosen a red dress that was modest enough to not be scandalous but immodest enough to not be conservative. It made for a nice middle ground, and she adorned it with a matching feathered sash and necklace, as well as the requisite mask.

Dear?

The word sounded a little awkward from him, but it made her smile. It had been a long time since anyone had called her 'dear' and it wasn't in some sort of elder, teacher kind of way.

"If you would," she said, holding out here wrists where her cuffs were adorned by decorative buttons that she was capable of fastening herself but might as well not worry about doing if she didn't have to.

This trip, the two of them together, was a natural step in the sequence of their friendship that had been building, even if there were many elements of it that were new and a little uncertain for each of them. They both had much, in matters of the heart, that they were newly stepping around in being with anyone new.

However, they were adults who had achieved openness and honesty, allowing her comfort in their finding their way forward together.

"You look rather dashing," she added, looking up at him through her dark lashes with a small smile as he buttoned her sleeves.

A
The couple made their way down to the street and joined the revelry. She can smolder with the best of them, Alric thought fondly, the memory of her smiling up at him through her lashes nestled in his thoughts. They walked together arm in arm, just another masked couple in the crowed. It was still early and at least on this side of town, while the celebration was jubilant, it hadn’t quite become rawkus. A pair of brightly costumed children bumped him as they ran through the streets, their parents trailing after sporting some sort of drinks playfully garnished with fruit and a brightly dyed feather. Alric thought the locals might have been taking the theme a bit too far, but why come all this way if he wasn’t going to try new things.

“Good sir, ma’am,” Alric called to the couple waving, “Who’s selling the drinks?” As they approached, he noticed the cups were made of thin wood, probably only meant for single use.

The wife stepped forward, marraige knife proudly displayed by her plunging neckline. Alric glanced from the pair of twinkling stones in the hilt to her eyes, then to her husband’s as she answered. He hoped the man didn’t think he was ogling his wife. The Ebou Dari’s eyes were fixed on Andra instead. He didn’t blame the man. She was stunning even with half her face covered.

They left, Alric glanced over his shoulder to see both parents staring after Andra. He couldn’t help but laugh as they turned the corner. They walked another block, pausing to watch a pair of acrobats. They lean men in tight black and white clothing adorned with black and white feathers. The crowd gasped as one man threw the other into the air and applauded as each man balanced on only a single hand. Alric tossed them a coin, impressed by the level of discipline it must have taken to reach that point.

Finally, they found the stand selling drinks. A pair of women with feathers in their hair stood under a small tent mixing liquor and fruit juices while a third took orders. As they fell into line, the sounds of drums and whistles caught their attention. They turned to see a pair of the most elaborate costumes either had seen all day. A man and a woman, strode down the street waving and smiling. Both wore elaborate headdresses of green, purple, and silver. Enormous pairs of wings unfurled from their backs, each with a team of attendants lifting them up on sticks. Beyond that, the two wore little more than a few strategically placed feathers.

Nudging Andra, Alric pointed to the couple and said, “See that’s about what I had in mind when you said you’d ‘rather go naked.’” His playful grin turned into a gasp of wonder as the attendants moved folding and unfolding the massive wings.

Festivals assured that every sense came alive.

Andraste walked along the street, into and through and around the revelry, with Alric by her side. Everywhere around her was something to see, and to hear, and to touch, and even to smell. The latter was nearly so strong as to be taste all on its own, but she knew there would drink and food soon as well.

She said little, content to walk with him and just take all of it in. It was nice to get away from the daily toil of the Tower, on something other than a mission so the daily toil simply relocated. This was a holiday, pure and simple, and she was determined to make the most of it, just like she was determined to make the most of her company.

When he nudged her and whispered, she looked at him with a flash of a smile and dark eyes glittering behind her mask. "I would still rather go naked than have feathers placed as such. One would think they would..." She pursed her lips around a slightly wicked smile. "...tickle, and maybe not in the best of ways."
