"Isn't that the truth?" he said softy, her words reflecting his quite common assessment of his life of late.

Still he believed that they would win out though he knew not of casualties and other concerns. Largely his role to date had been to hit things until they died and then hot them some more. Protecting channellers went without saying but he had never had to direct a battle, to give orders during war. Sure he had barked a few things at times but never assumed a mantle of responsibility. It had to be difficult, he assumed.

I wonder if those such as the Master of Arms feels the weight of such things? To make a decision even though you knew it would cost lives? Would it all just then be about the numbers? he asked himself.

"Of course Tia Sedai, your wish is my command," he said with a small curl to the sides of his lips and pushed himself up and to his feet, "as your current sword I would advise that you do the same, if I may"

He did not say good night as he made his way to the small cot, or offer her good dreams. They both knew their night would be far from the sweetest or most restful. It didn't matter really, whatever was fated to happen would happen. He just hoped that few would fall and the damned Shadow would think twice about reaching itself this close to Tower lands. He slumped into the cot, fingers laced under his head, and hummed a tune.

He didn't know here he knew it from or what the words were though he felt sure there were words to it. It was a deep, soothing tune, something to lull the eyes with and it faded bit by bit as sleep overtook him.

Tia Sedai
Tia took off her boots, but otherwise remained dressed as she laid down on the bed. She listened as Alrim hummed his toon, and before long, felt her eyelids grow heavy. Sleep came, but it wasn’t particularly restful. How could it be, given what she and others would face later that day?

The Green sister lingered between the sleeping and waking worlds when she heard a knock at their door. She sat up, but Alrim was already on his feet and at the door, “Who is it?”

“Corporal Salaran. The Commander sent me to tell you the party from the Citadel have just arrived by Gateway,” a man called.

Alrim opened the door, “Tell the Commander we will be along shortly.”

Tia had seen about pulling on her boots as she listened to the exchange. When Alrim closed the door and faced her again, she’d begun braiding her hair once more. “Now that they are here, I suspect things shall move quickly,” she said as she pushed herself up off the bed. “Let’s go brief them on what we know. The sooner we get that over with, the sooner we take care of the threat.”

Her heart seemed to pound in her chest, but Tia did her best to keep up the Aes Sedai facade of calm in the face of all things. At the door, she looked to Alrim, “There may be Gaidin with the channelers. They might expect you to defer to them. You’ve seen what we’re up against. Don’t be afraid to tell them to sod off. I’ve got your back, Alrim.”

"And I have yours Tia, against even Aes Sedai" he responded, sincerely but still wondering whether such an event would leave him intact.

It was a short but forbidding walk to meet the new arrivals. Even before arriving you could tell there were a good half dozen or more of them. Green and Yellow which was something he rejoiced at, though the Green far outnumbered the Yellow. It was the Shadow after all. As they arrived they were already arguing about what to do and how quickly to do it. It was a wonder they didn't bring the outpost to a standstill.

Or that they ever get anything done he noted to himself privately.

"A quick strike! Surprise! Works every time. Won't even need swords just fire"

"I would not advise it," he said as he entered, "there might be more than we saw and they have a Draghkar too"

There was a small silence at his words, not through fear but through looking at him as if he had broken some rule unwritten by addressing them. He remained impassive though it was hard not to feel his stomach turn and his head lighten at his foolishness. Cheeks reddened slightly but he maintained his ground. He looked through them rather than at them, which he was sure annoyed them further but it was the only way of keeping himself from stepping back out of the door.

"And you think a Ji'val knows better than an Asha'man?" an Aes Sedai asked him with an amused tone.

"I think the Asha'man has not witnessed the enemy directly," he responded with a stoic tone, "this time" he added hastily to the end.

"Tia where did you find this one, he is quite amusing"

Alrim wisely remained silent at that comment.

Tia Sedai
Tia looked to her Green Sister and Brother with an arched brow, looking very much like her mother in that moment, “I got him from our Warder Yards, and he happens to be right. If it were just Trollocs we were dealing with, a quick strike would be the right move. Unfortunately, we will need to be more calculating in how we strike.

“I want to somehow get the Draghkar before anything else. If we eliminate that threat, we can focus on the Trollocs until the Fade dare shows its face. With your assistance, I expect we can make quick work of it, but I want it to be a well thought out attack,” Tia explained.

The Warder for the Asha’man looked amused, “You are definitely your mother’s daughter. Garren, she is right, too, as was the Ji’Val.” He looked to Tia, “When do we leave?”

“As soon as we’ve got the plan sorted,” Tia explained.

It didn’t take them too long to come up with a strategy that all could agree upon. Two Channelers would make the Draghkar their priorities, one of those channelers being Tia. As soon as everyone was in position, they would use the One Power to eliminate the flying beasts. After that? It might be more of a free for all, but once they knew where the Fade was, every effort would be made to eliminate it.

Before long, the group was moving out as silently as a group of thirty could be. As they closed in on the outcrops, Tia and the Green Ashaman named Garren moved to a higher view point. The two Draghkar were easy to spot. Looking at one another, Tia and Garren nodded. They’d strike on a count of ten. Tia focused on her Draghkar, and didn’t take hold of the Source until she hit One. As soon as she did, she let go a bolt of lightning that ripped into the beast. It didn’t have a chance to take off as the electricity struck it and a nearby trolloc dead. Garren used a fireball on his, and both Draghkar were now not a threat.

The Trollocs wasted no time in sounding an alarm. The high ground would give their party a bit of an advantage, but not for long. Tia held on to the Source and as a band of Trollocs started to swarm, let loose with razor thin threads of air. Alrim was nearby, sword raised and ready for battle.

Alrim gave counsel when asked, only one other occasion raising his voice without request and that was to state that ambush would work better than a blunt assault. For the most part he watched and listened. He was true to his word and backed Tia on her statements when she made them. They had started this business together and he planned to finish it that way. He liked her, the Tower needed more of her sort. Soon enough though the talking was over and the last leg of the journey begun.

The tension was palpable and rose as time passed and geography shifted them closer to the coming skirmish. There were no words, just grim determination. Everyone was aware of the recent attacks and the losses. No one was ready to allow another day like the one at the Citadel. Once they had arrived they were swift in setting up positions - channellers on higher ground and fighters on lower, ready to be the anvil upon which the seething ranks of the Shadow would break.

The flashes of lightning and fire erupted and Alrim nodded to himself with satisfaction as the Draghkar were annihilated. They had all been concerned they would somehow get away but so far the plan worked perfectly. Fro there it was a simpler battle, a ground battle, and the Trollocs began their assault. Haphazard and chaotic at first, reactionary, the blades of the Gaidin and Ji'val cut down the first ranks to make it passed the death being woven.

The Fade did not appear at first either and Alrim wondered whether it knew they were trying to target it. As the battle continued, however, and they proved difficult to erase, it charged out upon its mount. It did not attack though, instead it tried t regroup its forces into a rear guard for retreat. The Trollocs were its shield ad as Alrim fought to keep Tia safe he heard the rates of channelling increase as they tried to target the retreating Fade.

He was not sure how long it took but one of them managed it in the end, the remaining Trollocs falling to the ground, screaming their slow deaths in a way he was beginning to find sickeningly familiar. He sighed and looked back at Tia, a small smile and a nod, it was over.

Tia Sedai
Tia sagged with relief the moment the Trollocs fell in their death throes. She looked to Alrim and returned his small smile and nod in kind. They’d done it. For her, one of the first things she organized from start to finish, with Alrim’s help of course. He would make someone a fine Gaidin one day.

Before she could ask if he was ok, Garren approached, “We’re opening a gateway back to the outpost. I’ll stay behind with my Warder to clean up the corpses. Why don’t you head back and help with the injured?”

Tia was more than happy to let Garren take care of the dead. “Thank you, Garren.” She looked to Alrim, and looked him over, “Let’s head back. Get some much needed and earned rest. We can return to the Citadel tomorrow.”

Garren nodded, “I will stay at the outpost until morning and will happily make a gateway for us. It will save you both the time traveling.”

“We will not say no,” Tia confirmed. With that, she led Alrim to the Gateway. There weren’t many injured, luckily, and the Green and her Ji’Val escort were the last to step through. Before they collapsed for what remained of the night, she and Alrim gave him an account of what happened, and assured him the Trollocs would not be a problem. . .at least until another band decided to move in and try and extend the Blightborder further south.
