Chapter Three: Tidy Endings
The cries for diplomacy warred against the very nature of the Fury. From the agent at Val’s side to the Soldier, obviously nonplussed with the constant peril of the situation—none understood the need for intemperance.

Peering into the merchant’s face it seemed that Durlaen spoke true. The pallor of the man’s face had spread down to his hands as dolorous eyes were fixed upon Valadin.

Outside the row raised by the searching city guard died down as the men either gave up their search to report or had simply devoted their energies to another part of the square. They will never understand, Val thought with an inward sigh. Relenting, the saber tip came away from the trader’s throat fostering a fit of hungry intakes of air once attention was turned elsewhere. In the same moment the unconscious guards were roused from their previous quiescent state. Lighting upon their attacker they reached for weapons only to be harshly rebuked by their employer.

The eyes-and-ears woman handled the arranging of their safe passage from Toman Head come nightfall as well as the subsequent deliverance of the other agents save the one that had been captured. Throughout the talks Durlaen, who had lost his usual air mien, remained either annoyed or disappointed with Valadin despite having gotten his way of things. In fact most of the store’s occupants averted their gaze from where Val sat as if the sight of him invited a distasteful memory or sentiment.

Behind it all the Fury pulsed like an exposed nerve, painful in its incessant demand for the movement and energy of combat. As Midday faded into evening and the streets had quieted enough for the merchant’s wagon to extract from their hiding hole Valadin found himself constantly wishing for discovery if only to exercise the unsettled heat boiling his blood. Alas their flight was without incident. Apparently the boy and the woman had been correct in their choice of trusting the merchant’s ability. Whatever steps the shifty vendor had taken to ensure their safe passage had been effective and soon they left Toman Head behind for the peacefulness of safety.

Through the journey there was little need for conversation. The eyes-and-ears woman sitting across from the two male channelers with a blank face and few words to spare. Her gaze when it lingered upon Val was particularly critical as though trying to pierce through an unseen mystery by looking at him. Taesh simply tried to avoid any further interaction with either, the trauma of the experience having been enough to dry away the playful veneer normally evident in the young Seafolk.

“Durlaen,” Valadin started to say as they passed over a bump that jolted the entire group from their chairs. When seats had been resettled the statement was began anew, “Durlaen, you will learn that compromise can be the beginning of defeat. For men such as us there is only a thimble’s chance of getting an opportunity to rise again. I…I cannot afford to compromise. Not when there is someone I must return to.”

Why he had given voice was a question that plagued Val for the reminder of their journey. After that he had little say until time came to report to the Master of Soldiers. Even while speaking with the man, it bothered him that he had chosen to reveal the heart of his zealotry—or at least part of it—to someone he knew little of. Just like Keillan.

Deciding the similarity between the two men to be the cause of his uncharacteristic divulgence Valadin put the incident from mind for more battles would come and his anger would be needed to survive every one of them.
Notes: This effectively can be the end of the thread so no real need for another post, but you can if you like. It was good rping with you.
